What's the general census on KOF2003?

Don’t get me wrong, the controls are way better then 98 and 2K2, but they do feel a little slippery. XI and so on really got the controls right.

i dont know why but i really couldnt pull out everything i want in this game.
i dont have problems in kofs like 94,95,even 96,97,98, but in 2003 i cant do shit… i almost cant connect (Kusanagi) the simple j.C,s.C,qcf+D,D… i dunno if the time is strict or what…

Random thoughts on 2003:

Worst features: Too fast gameplay for me (2002 speed?), “prototype” tag system (IMO perfected in XI), weird input windows (to do Clark’s jumping A, standing C, hcbx2+P combo, I have to buffer the first hcb during the peak of Clark’s jump, lest I perform a hcb+P Shining Wizard upon landing! yes, the motion is stored for THAT long!).

Best features: LDMs instead of (H)SDMs (none of the IMO bothersome “activate X”/“usable with Y % health” business), IMO by far the best representation of Robert, Malin’s intro (.

Verdict: Somewhat limited and sloppy, but certainly worth a look. Another reason why a KOF XI: Unprecedented Match (or some such) would excite me more than any “next-generation” title…

Nothing wrong with 98 controls. 2k3 controls suck.

Nothing wrong with 98 controls. 2k3 controls suck. It doesn’t even allow shortcut usage from what I remember and I think (not sure) that you couldn’t input any motions in advance while you were executing some other kind of move (though not sure, it was a long while that i played this game).

Still don’t understand why you upload this shit. You are cluttering youtube with crap. I hate looking for new kof matches and finding replays of people that don’t know what they are doing. What for?

Anyway, some good matches:

You must be high man, that’s all I have to say. I’ve been playing fighters since 07, pad player mostly. But I’ve use Keyboard, and got pretty decent. And I’ve used a custom joystick with Sanwa parts, and I’m pretty decent with that, but I prefer pad overall.

To give you an idea: I can play 3S, Garou: MOTW, Guilty Gear (whatever versions are on Naomi hardware, I’m not a fan so), KOF XI and XII, Samurai Shodown 2 and V SP, CVS 2, etc.

I never, never had a problem getting moves and bnb shit out. Never.

But for whatever reason I can rarely do bnb shit, or even Iori/Kyo’s Rekka’s in 98 and 02. 02 has slightly better controls, but I still have problems. In 98 I can get Iori’s rekka’s to come out maybe 2 out of 10 tries. And maybe 1 out of 10 in a basic combo (such as crC, Rekka). I have no problems getting that to come out in 2003, XI, and etc.

How people are able to play them regardless of stiff inputs? My guess is that majority online are using keyboard. Either that or magical Jap arcade sticks blessed with Daigo and Kuroda jizzom.

98 has stiff controls. Simple as that. Same with 99-01. If you cannot see why someone have trouble with those controls, it’s easy. I played ST/GGXX/NGBC/KOFXI/3S/VF4evo/T5 before I played the old KOF games. ST isn’t bad on inputs, the others are pretty damn good. You can’t go from those games to the old KOF games without trouble. When I first got into the old KOF games and I first played vs Emil, I gave up trying to fight him. I was fighting the controls the entire time. I had to boot up KOF 00 and 01 because Ithey were the most stiff. If my execution was so horrible I wouldn’t have taken up playing I-no in GG. I was playing OG 98 the other day and to input my moves slowly for the game to read them. I believe this is because there’s a need for df/b to be held for 2 frames?

Yeah, pretty much. To me, playing the older KOFs is like…trying to play SvC on the Xbox version. Simple shit like Rekkas need to be put in just exact to come out; I almost need to pause and do that shit perfect to finish the series. 236, DPs, half circles aren’t really a problem, but f,hcf and 646 commands are kinda dumb (always have to be perfect with that stuff with the Sakazakis or I can get the former or latter). They def loosened up the command interpreter for 2K3.

@ Emil - Look man, no-one gives a shit if you think someone is shitting up YT with matches. You’re very free to not watch anymore. In anycase, I haven’t touched 2K3 in years and just played on a spur of the moment thing; I don’t practice the game or take it seriously. So give it a rest.

Seems like nobody’s replying to this thread about this game. Do you know why nobody replies to your thread about this game? It’s because NOBODY FUCKING PLAYS IT. Do you know why nobody plays this game?

Let me list off the laundry list of why KoF 2k3 was pure trash from a tournament standpoint, and why it never saw the light of day at SBO after it was featured for one year:

 • Jumps were fagged so that you have a strange lag after you land from a jump. This lag threw off the timing of many KoF players who were used to the way jumps/hops worked in 98-2002. This lag also made it so it is DAMN NEAR impossible to safe jump to bait certain special moves so you can punish. This also makes some basic B&Bs that were easy as pie in previous KoFs hard as fuck to do because of the strict timing required. In other words, jumps were shit.
 • BLOCKSTUN BROKE TO SHIT. Near impossible to play a rushdown game unless you used characters that had easily exploitable moves. Tons of moves that were previously safe and an integral part of most characters’ offense were rendered UNUSABLE because of the way blockstun DIDN’T work in this shit game.
 • BROKEN switchout system. Because this was the first iteration of the switchout system, the special attack switchout was a VERY easy NOOB-FRIENDLY abusable mechanic. Part of the reason some of the top tiers were top tier was because they could EASILY exploit this broken fucked up mechanic.
 • ALL CHARACTERS MORE VULNERABLE TO COMMAND GRABS. Because of the way characters woke up, in all other decent fighting games, you usually had a few frames where you’re rendered ungrabbable, NOT IN THIS GAME LOL. You can get grabbed damn near INSTANTLY after you wake up, so BYE BYE TO EVADING COMMAND GRABS ON REACTION LOLZ.
 • INSTANT TICK THROW COMMAND GRABS. Hey! Remember when if you blocked an attack, you had a small period where you were ungrabbable in most other fighting games because you were in a block animation? LOL NOT HERE! Now you get instant 50/50s with a simple hop B/D whether they block it or not, and whether you do it late or not! Woo, IMPROVED GAME EXPERIENCE.
 • CD counters knocked players to the other side of the screen. Top tiers like Duo Lon, Malin, and K’ could play a LOL EZ keepaway game because of how stupidly fast meter built in this game. CD counter = INSTANT get out of jail free card. You don’t need a fucking DP if they have a free CD counter whenever they get in trouble! Oops, and what’s that you say? Duo Lon can easily start his 50/50 off of a CD? Oh well!
 • Duo Lon. This asshole was broken in of itself. He was broken not only because he had good moves, but he could EXPLOIT THE ABOVE ISSUES WITH THE CORE GAMEPLAY TO THE NTH FUCKING DEGREE.
 • Retarded stupid input windows and modified or nerfed shortcuts. Sure, make it harder to execute, but at least make the game READ THE INPUTS CORRECTLY. I actually read somewhere that there was some sort of stupid technical modification to this game to poll AT A SLOWER RATE for the player’s inputs, which is why a lot of shortcuts never fucking worked. TOO BAD, LERN2EXECUTE you say? No. SNKP realized this was a fatal mistake and fixed that issue when KoF XI was released.

I could list tons of fucked up shit with character specific stuff too that made NO fucking sense when they nerfed it, but I’m too tired to make a tl;dr post even longer.

I had to deal with this shit game for years before KoF XI came out. All this is what I’m telling you from playing repeatedly in arcades. This game made scrubs think they’re good at the game. By the first month this game was released, half the regulars at my arcade stopped playing 2k3 because of how shitty it was. I read a quote somewhere that basically, this game made everyone play KoF stupider. Brainless okizeme with Duo Lon, brainless D button faggotry with K’, brainless down B spamming into spammable qcf + K with Benimaru, and so on and so forth. And that quote was pretty damn accurate.

I don’t have problems with you guys playing this game. We all play shit games, but please, don’t try to defend this game like as though it was a decent game. It was a shit game. And it wasn’t even a fun shit game. KoF 96 was shit like 2k3 was too, but it was a good kinda shit game, it had so much broken off the wall shit and was the start of a completely revolutionary new system with polished graphics, presentation, music, and revamped movelists, that it was understandable.

This… there are no fucking excuses for this game.

Good post. Too bad you won’t get into the character specific info because no one will post up that info.

best KOF ever, this was snk’s version of mvc.
