Not sure what the thread is asking. Are you trying to ask when was pop music ever good?
the timeless quality of the songs and the fact interpolations of them still go platinum is the measure of greatness.
Harlem Renaissance is definitely up there. A huge number of timeless artists emerged then, and you can trace back the influences of most genres today to the music in that time period. Also:
Sometimes I love the internet.
Clifford Brown > Miles Davis
and i mean “greater than” in this post. heheh.
yeah. I actually liked the club mix jams and house tracks the 90s had as well as grunge.
For rap and rock 90’s easily.
I say that the best time for mainstream music was the 80s and back. Not that the 90s were bad but it was the beginning of the end.
Again what you guys mean by main stream music?
I think you overlooked the “mainstream” part of the main post. Green Day, No Doubt and Blink 182 are all pop punk bands, they aren’t true punk, but they all had a huge impact in their own day. Look at the reaction Blink 182’s comeback got from fans, people loved that shit.
I hate all the people who hate on Blink, their shit might not be all that musically talented, but it’s hella catchy and to a teenager the songs actually have a lot of meaning (well, some of them), and are actually rather deep. I grew up with that shit and to this day it’s my favorite band, too many memories to give up. Hell, kids at parties nowadays STILL play Blink songs, and I mean like stereotypical “popular kids” parties where the rest of the night is riddled with hip hop.
I won’t try to claim they’re a true punk band, they’re not, but they have their own sound and they made a huge impact on the music world. Green Day even more so although I’m not a huge fan.
Stuff that topped the charts usually.
widespread commercial distribution over a broad range of media, but most particularly radio, television, and record sales.
I don’t know this is tough. the 80s had the far better rock but I really like the R&B from the 90s so at this point in time I guess I’m leaning towards the 90s because really is too dope.
Late 80s early 90s era for me I guess. But I don’t know if I cared for pop music then even. I say this more because of Sonic Youth, The Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr, Cap’n Jazz and so on but few of those bands enjoyed mainstream success. Nirvana counts though right?
Rite of Spring.
Rhapsody in Blue.
Coletrane.

How about Billboard’s Hot 100 for reference, which dates back to 1955.

U get the idea
Lol, thank you. I was running on very little sleep and working on an essay. I’ll put myself on blast for that post, that was garbage on my end.
On Blink 182. They are OK as a band. I will give them all the credit in the world for making good pop music. But I can’t say they were anything amazing. Green Day has also turned into some wacky shadow of its former self. Not because of some high up my ass conception of the ideal punk music, but because they go parading in make up and make music with all the stopping power of Captain and Tennille. American Idiot was a weak album; worse of all its that it is a great name for album and it went on that. Taking that period of time though, we got Out Comes the Wolves which made it to the charts and Americana: both which are significantly better than either of those two bands effort.
Honestly, I like Dookie, its fun album; but it sure as shit ain’t all that…hmmm It’s been a while since I listened to old Green Day so, time to get on a plane trip back on the nineties, kiss a rose on the face, go down a waterfall and forget Batman and Robin never happened. C & C music factory, here I come!
Edit: We are totally forgetting the ratpack for the 60’s, as well as a lot of musicals like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Singing in the Rain and Mary Poppins.

They dont make em like that any more… those songs are the shit and for me still get regular play.
