Like with any game, whatever’s most fitting and appropriate and suits the a particular game’s mood, theme and gameplay.
As with film, setting an appropriate aural ambiance is a key element to the overall enjoyment of a game. Just because the action may be hectic doesn’t necessarily mean hard rock is in order. Sometimes an orchestral allegro piece can far more beseem what’s taking place, and at the same time, bring a certain elegance to otherwise action intensive proceedings.

I’ve been listening to Queens of the Stone Age recently. All is good until one of Mark Lanegan’s tracks comes up and his sexy raspy voice transports me into another realm of consciousness.
I just play the in-game music. I mean, it’s nowhere near as good as the stuff in HD Remix, but it’s not as shitty as most people say it is.
Except for “Indestructible”.
