In AE Ryu has more bad match ups than Ken. Think about why. Look outside the box of single button presses and moves from the command list.
Anyone who brings up match-ups or Tier lists isn’t thinking outside the box. You see more Ryu’s in tournaments placing/doing better than any Ken’s. Regardless of geek charts.
how is ryu poking better than ken? ken has a bigger variety as i stated. when did ryu get a better st lp hit box? try doing cr. lk, cr. lp, st lp, sweep i guarantee you the st lp will whiff pretty often.

Ryu has a faster walking speed than Ken, this gives him better footsie potential.
Ryu can do cr.mk xx fierce fireball with almost zero risk. Ken’s is not a true block string and is quite easy to focus through if you do it predictably.
Ryu has many more routes to untechable knockdowns. Leading to greater damage potential.
Ryu has more damage potential in 1 combo (mainly due to the damage output he can get from a FADC to U1).
Ryu’s focus attack moves backwards on start-up and travels a long way forwards on release (good). Ken’s goes nowhere (bad).
Ryu has an automatic timing perfect safe jump from his 5 frame sweep.
Did I mention Ryu has a 5 frame sweep…
Ken has a scarier mix-up on his opponents wake-up. Ryu can’t really make his opponent guess like Ken can.
Ken has a sort of hit confirmable DP. FADC if blocked, let it rip if hit.
Ken has 2 viable Ultra’s with varying uses, Ryu only really has one.
Ken’s step kick has awesome range for a normal, but is focus bait and leaves him at -2 on block.
Ken has the fastest overhead out of the shoto’s.
Ken’s air tatsu’s are the best of the shoto’s by far.

On paper, I actually think that Ryu “sounds” better than Ken by a long shot, but don’t get me wrong. I think Ken is way more scary to play against than Ryu and I actually think that they are pretty close to being as good as each other. I believe that the Ken vs Ryu match-up is actually in Ken’s favour slightly (at the moment).
I just wish this thread would die already. This argument is soooooooooo old and soooooooo pointless…

thats redundant, there are going to be casual/bad (however you look at it depending on your level of elitism) players that pick characters and play without any semblance of strategy. since this thread’s on shoryuken i feel like people like that don’t even have to be mentioned. sorry it just really bugs me when casual players get ripped on by people who take games seriously as if it makes the competitive gamer a better person than the casual gamer. as for the offline/online thing that’s also redundant because casual gamers aren’t going to go to offline tourneys. on the same note there are A LOT of great players on XBL that simply don’t have the means or aren’t geographically fortunate enough to participate offline a lot. i feel like the rise of latif and krone should put that offline elitism to bed but i guess not.

I wasn’t ripping on anybody nor am I an elitist. play mostly online too btw. as there aren’t any venues for fighting games close to me. And Ken is VERY popular online and not ALL Ken players are bad but I haven’t encountered a single good/decent one since Ive been playing.

I am not hating on Ryu. Go look at my account on PSN: Shineboxab my main character is Ryu. I know Ken is better in AE and he will be better in 2012.
Did you read where the overall movement and reach of the attack of the c.mk being the same as they were in SSF4? That was ultimately the problem and what everyone wanted back. Something Ken does not have. Did you not read all the things posted about what Ryu can do and not ken? People seem to have this misconception that Ken is better than Ryu in AE cause some so called top players ranked him higher…And don’t even use him nor have we seen ken even competitivie in any major tournaments. Ryu is still more competitive. A standing jab combo to sweep doesn’t make ken better than a charater who can do that and more with more damage.

His ambiguous cross ups, his overall sweep speed, his Kara throw range, his SRK range, mix up game two 3f normals, escape tatsu and faster recovery on several normals makes him better. This is why he has little to no bad match ups.
Oh wait its this thread where someone says Ryu is better or more popular…
I honestly left it to the fact that these people using him in tourneys have just stuck to their best character since Vanilla. For example Daigo, Air, valle, dakou etc. All using him since 4… fuudo and poongko dropped Ryu in favor of high tiered characters
