What makes a fighter balanced?

LMAO

Oh, true, don’t really play that game, but I’ve heard it’s hella legit. Mainly I was just thinking of UMvC3 and SFxT.

Then say the names of the games, BBCS, KOFXIII, MK9, SC5, SSF4 and TTT2 are great games that also have DLC chars :stuck_out_tongue:
I would even add MVC3 since while i think that is not really good, the fun that you can have with it mades it “good”

Already admitted I forgot about KoF, but MK9… yeah… And I played BB for a while, and while I probably wouldn’t call it terrible, I probably wouldn’t call it great either. But that opinion’s from many moons ago, back who knows how many versions. SSF4 has DLC characters? TTT2 DLC characters are free as far as I know. And I seriously don’t even know the first thing about SC5.

My point was basically that I don’t like UMvC3 or SFxT and both those games have DLC characters, so I made a quick little post to whore likes. Please don’t take that away from me, it’s all I have left ;_;

I so wanted to like that post, but then I saw the trap!

Thanks for all the comments on balance. I decided to make a more detailed post on LoL or modern MOBA style freemium design.

MK9 is balanced because everybody has the same jump ins.
MvC3 is great for dumbfuckerry.

I wonder how the community would accept a true mvc2: 3 vs 3 (in actuality 1 vs 1 with each having 2 assist chars), only 1 playable character per team (only the top tiers would be actually playable), with every other character existing solely as a selectable assist.

vampire savior has pretty good balance. IMO, balance is every character having a shot to win a tournament 10 years into a game. w\e causes that is balance. This year the worst character in the game got top 3 and I never fucking thought that shit would happen.

vsav has been around for 15 years I think and the worst characters are still competing. Usually for fighters once a game has been around, the worst characters end up getting worse and after year 1 or 2 of a game, they’re obsolete. For 15 years, the worst characters in vsav have had a chance to win the big boy tournaments.

I think any future game designer or fan of fighters needs to play vampire savior. Its one of the best designed fighters of all time.

We’d be back to trap teams.

I’ve seen Victor and Anakaris take it at tournaments.
I’ll agree with this post.

I’m a vampire savior player and I approve this message

you guys might wanna see above, VS hasn’t been quite through the wringer that more prominent games have ><

I prefer that creators try to balance a game overall. Imbalances will always exist because of differences in archetypes. Grapplers tend to lose to zoners, zoners tend to lose to rushdown/mixup chars, who in turn tend to lose to grapplers. Every game needs a healthy dose of good, bad and even matchups.

Ha ha ha… no.

Just because America doesn’t play it doesn’t mean that the series doesn’t see extensive competitive play in Japan.

Heck, we just had the seventh Darkstalkers Combination Cup AND the 5th All Out War (VSav 5 on 5) last weekend.

Homogenization: Giving all of the characters similar tools, and then adding variety to an otherwise stable core. This is mostly how most 3D fighters and SF4 are balanced. All of the characters have very similar options and power, with a few key differences to add variety.

Strong counterplay: Adding a lot of options to escape any situation, and then making sure every character has a good variety of interesting tools that are in no way similar. This is how Guilty Gear is balanced. Basically, giving characters a chance to escape any shitty situation.

These two things are not polar opposites. GG actually has a lot of homogenization, but it’s entirely within the system mechanics and not the characters themselves. You can also just do these things poorly. 3S is an example of a really imbalanced game with strong homogenization, and GGXX is the same for the second category.

The third key ingredient is refinement! Just keep figuring out “hey how do make this bad situation better without making this character way better vs all these other characters and also keep them fun”. It’s just problem solving, and why patches and updates make games more balanced if they’re well done.

I really hate patches to ballance fighting games, I really wish they would just leave the games alone.

Those two are the same damn thing you just worded it differently to make it seem so. Strong counter play isn’t a good way to word “same defensive options”.

I love seeing a game that I have no respect for get a patch that makes it more imbalanced though because of whiny people complaining before they let the game develop…
Nerf Chun some more. LMFAO

I agree with it. The problem is that online play expose casuals and newbies to more experienced players so the industry make the game easier for then keep playing, thats why we have a lot of comeback mechanics, shortcut inputs, guard trip, larger reversal window etc. In the past casuals were only exposed to more experienced players if they went to an arcade,if they only want to have fun with the game they should do it by playing the console version with friends of equal skill level or lower.
