What lead to the decline of 3D Fighting games?

One you didn’t specified any game but 3d fighter and the ones listed fall into that category. Whats this “True 3d Fighter” your speaking of? IF want match video go search for them. Im only showing the combo potential of 3d fighter that 10+ combo.

it shortened the movelist of most of the cast though
alot of character lost moves from previous installments and they werent throwaway moves… they were actually useful and made the characters more dynamic

If we got a new VF with good online they be back, they died off in the FGC crash and haven’t seen a SFIV style new release.
VF needs a overhaul imo, favorite fighter but it’s overly complicated. DOA was never big.

Tekken 7 is going to be the first true this Gen 3D fighter with any notoriety.

I would pay just to get a new Soul Caliber game. Heck, i’ll pay for a HD version of SC 4.

The streamlined movelist was one of the best goddamn changes they made. Actually focusing on the moves and trying to make them useful instead of just having a massively bloated collection of strings half of which are useless is good game design

Yes, some good moves are going to be lost. But you’re also getting buffs to other moves to bring them up to par because you can focus on a smaller assortment of strings to balance. I don’t think they got it perfect but it was about a billion times better than SCIV

I’d actually like to see a new IP tackle 3D fighting. One that doesn’t feel the need to play like the 1-2 decade old original game.

Judging by how the discussion has been going, I’m assuming that by 3D fighters, they mean games with 3D movement. Otherwise the new KOF, MK10, SF5, GGXrd, and every other mainstream fighter would be considered 3D. But these games have the characters moving on a 2D plane. They can not sidestep or otherwise move about in that extra dimension.

The changes to the fundamental gameplay design of Soul Calibur and the cutbacks to every area that made previous Soul Calibur titles stand out is what made Shite Caliber V a worthless investment. Unless you enjoy playing dress up there is no reason to play it over any other entry in the series. Online play for all the good titles is available through a variety of emulators. Mitsurugi has a better set of tools in Soul Edge than he does in that streamlined turd.

3D fighters ended up dying due to oversaturation or feature creep in older longer running games. Long running games have so much esoteric and “mechanics”.

VF being my favorite of 3D titles, couldn’t shake the image of being the hardest fighter on the market when it’s a surprisingly easy game. I also think this way of 3rd Strike too. Both games are easy to learn mechanically.

Sega needs to take VF’s mechanics and put them in a more aesthetically pleasing game. I’ll always love the voice acting and the most of the character designs, but they need to do something visually for more indicators on different states. There were multiple times I had to show people a counter-hit over and over before they saw it. They heard the difference but couldn’t see it.

DOA does the best job in this regard.

I disagree with this because if it was never big, then it would be the same as any other anime game, now wouldn’t it?

Disagree about streamlining Virtua Fighter. I still play 5 and 4 instead of Final Showdown due to how limited options are in the latest release and how unbalanced the whole thing is. Don’t regret purchasing it, but playing it for a prolonged period of time is just too disappointing.

Nope
They aren’t buffs
Those moves were in other soul caliburs
You just had to have execution to just frame them

Ivy lost viable moves and setups for ics
Yoshi lost moves and so did mitsu

This is the reality when you try to homogenize the cast instead of focusing on individual traits.
Not to mention that some moves like mistu 2 kb were useless unless you had bar as you could be punished on hit.

It watered the game down. I digress ex is cute to look at but its really smoke and mirrors compared to the shit you used to be able to do.

Trying to hard to appeal to a 2d audience instead of sharpening the sword so to speak.

3D games don’t come in droves like 2d games
Usually during the fiscal year when fighting games are released multiple 2d games come out
3D games come out a a lower frequency.

Your speaking of 2.5 which i made specifically not include in here.

Spoiler

Fate unlimited codes: 2/8 SP for side stepping
Fighting layer: 6 HP/HK for side stepping
Project justice: 5/7/8/9 LK+HK side step,
DBZ Infinite world: 22/88 G is side step
KoF MIRA: 2/8 LP+LK is side step, holding button allowed players to straf in that direction.
JJASB:5/2SP side step, stylish move (aka instant guard) also sidestepped
Xmen next dimension: 22/88 side step, 8- way movement can be used from a button.
Naruto 4 GC: 2/8 SP side step

every other game is locked in 8 way movement.

VF does it in subtle way, all counter hits have wind effect coming from the counter opponent. Moves with special counter had unique animation or different hit stun.

Spoiler

It also allows for sidestepping

While not as eye-catching as Tekken hitspark, or noticeable as DOA animation, Its serviceable. The sound also worked too.

Virtua fighter 5 is great. their no need to have whole bunch options in game. More does not always mean better. Quality over quantity.

I was talking more a counter-hit that produces the yellow flash, with the wind and sweat being blown of a character that got hit with it. When I was running through certain things about the game, in the beginning, the few people that wanted to get into it didn’t see what I was talking about until I pointed it out to them and even then it took several tries. Some of that was due to the stages as well (Vanilla VF5 Lion’s stage for example) There’s a lot of subtle things that could be made to certain states, but hopefully not at the sacrifice of the speed. I wouldn’t want a slow a VF.

People still bitch about the sound even after they know the “jet sound” is for full-circulars for example.

There’s a lot of things Sega could do to change the look and sound of the game, but the Japanese would probably riot. They gave Jacky a deep voice for the location test for VF4 at Golfland in California for instance. Dude sounded like Billy Idol, lol.

A consistent release schedule would help as well. That goes for Tekken as well. We know the arcades are their bread and butter, but when trying to drum up hype here in the U.S. only the most ardent fans pay attention while the rest of the gaming populace looks at the release as “It finally came out?! It’s too late to get into” Sega did some bone-headed shit with the VF5 release as well. Online DRM in Japanese arcades in 2006 didn’t help it’s cause.

“Bruh…” at the bolded…

Billy Idol? I wish I was able to witness that glorious voice acting…

I personally was not concerned with time between arcade release and console release. The fact that SEGA put out anything new besides Sonic on the Western console market was in itself a small miracle.

The jet sound and plastic drum sticks hitting together could use an upgrade like they have done with the rest of the soundtrack. Lion is also overdue for a voice acting upgrade.

The voice acting can stay imo, especially Lion. It causes extra salt, lol. I like that the game doesn’t take try to take itself seriously, and like it even more the older I get. Sega’s been releasing other stuff besides Sonic, since forever but people seem to ignore it.

Bolded: Is the other reason it never got a foothold here. I remember being asked if VF5:R was going to make it here as people in the local fgc wanted to stay current. The same thing happened with VF4: Final Tuned. No one wants to play an outdated version, especially when fans from Japan moved on to the newest release. There’s a higher chance that more than just the ardent fans will stick with it since there’s competition.

At this point I don’t expect it to happen. I’ll just hope that a VF collection of arcade perfect ports, gets released on PC.

Huh. I came in late even though Ive played more than 5 but I always had a bad taste for DOA and a near hatred of Itagaki. So lack of him made me break by my own series curiosity and I found that going back and playing older titles with 5 that 5(more its later variants because vanilla 5 gave me worse load times) was far more enjoyable.

LOL Itagaki who said that “wrestlers should never beat ninjas” and balanced his games thusly (on top of “fuck the way pros play this game, make counters mashable”).

Yeah, I didn’t play DOA4 until waaaaay late, but the ability to a hold at ANY TIME, was straight dumb. The people defending it were even dumber.

I mean there are things you can enjoy in DOA4, but I just laugh at those who say that the gameplay was good overall…
It was a hot mess and the epitome of why Itagaki should stay away from fighting games.
