What is the justification on making games more "casual friendly?"

Wii.

What’s wrong with the wii again?

this

I actually like this answer

What most people fail to realize is that video games are simply a business. The primary goal of the company is to make money. People got so caught up in being fanboys that they fail to realize that. The justification in making games more casual friendly is simply to expand the customer base so that the business as a whole evolves.

which will most likely make even more casual friendly games and the so called hardcore ones will prolly die out

though if it’s like spuddly says, I’m not sure I mind. I’m just worried games will end up being like virtual board games tho

Glad other companies aren’t doing this shit. Capcom (let’s be real, that’s who you’re talking about here.) has a customer base that mostly accepts nearly anything they do with open arms, and as long as the same dudes can keep winning at tourneys without too much adjusting, it’s all good on the tourney scene, too. The people these changes and dumbing down matter to, for the most part, really don’t matter to Capcom.

Capcom did a lousy job of making SF4 casual friendly anyway.
They tried to simplify the game and prevent high damage off jabs by not letting you chain off them but then retained a link combo system that introduces a huge execution barrier for most new players. Add in a huge reversal window, and you have a game that frustrates a lot of players into quitting because they end up getting DP’d every time they try to combo.

Yo man, David Sirlin DIED for YOUR sins,*** MAN***!

What’s wrong with a company making money? Isn’t that a good thing? Would people rather companies be in sad boat that Sega is in (by sad boat I mean look at Sonic and think about the last time you played a good Sonic game)? Capcom is just a smart company that’s all.

'Cause I like to mash buttans.

Games are being made casual-friendly because even if all the hardcore players bought five copies of SSF4 each Capcom would still lose millions, whereas if only a small fraction of the casual players buy one copy each, a profit can be made. Make no mistake, hardcore players only matter to Capcom in the sense that they give casual players something to aspire to, which will hopefully get them to buy the games.

while this may be okay on sirlin.net forums plz don’t do this here

What casual players play competitively anyway? Most casuals will walk past gamestop or see a commercial and say OHMAGAWD NU ULTRAZ AND NEW CHARZ. AWSHUM GAEM, buy it, and be on thier jolly way.

Case closed.

Just to put this up front:

SRK, all of you, you do realize this is happening in every single genre of video gaming, right? It’s not something specific to fighters. Generally, fighting games are doing damn well compared to most of gaming, considering most fighting game series are still trucking on the same as ever in Japanese arcades, while FPS and RTS are still using mostly 10-15 year old games because nearly everything since is complete crap. SFIV is just the 800lb gorilla in the room.

If I wanted to play a physically demanding execution heavy sport like tennis, I rather think I would go play tennis. You know, a game that will give me physical exercise, has international respect, nice facilities, and millions of dollars worth of equipment industry, media coverage, and tournament economy rather than Street Fighter, a game with smelly fat asses, social stigmas and regional interest, played in basements and community leagues, and with up to a few thousand dollars involved in tournaments covered by random swearing dudes for free.

If you’re going to judge fighting games on that criteria, they’re just going to fail miserably. You need to look at what Street Fighter offers that other competitions don’t, not what it has that they already do. The general public does not look up to button pressing skills, they just look at is a nerdy sideshow talent.

Also, damn it why am I posting in this thread.

This.

Thread over?
