there is no such thing as a good final fantasy game, thx. 6 came the closest but still…
really the only square games that deserve the praise they get are chrono trigger + einhander (i keep hearing about vagrant story but i haven’t played it?). and saga frontier is about their only thing that’s legit underrated.
ANYWAY
yeah hdr isn’t bad, just disappointing relative to what it could have been. sirlin’s done much worse (laggy ST @ evo 07…)
I will have to put a nod to SF2 Hyper Fighting. It is like a chess match. It is pure, the speed is great, and it really pits skill against skill.
I do love almost every other SF though. I love playing SF1, but I do agree the game kind of sucks. Alpha 1 is so-so. It plays well and is fun, but too light and the custom combos make the game a tad weird.
Alpha 2 and 3 are great.
SF3 was a big disappointment to me. The animations are top notch, but the graphics are grainy and the colors are saturated. It took awhile for me to enjoy the gameplay, but eventually I did when I finally invested quality time with Third Strike.
I love SFIV. Th ebest of SF2 with some new additions akin to SF3.
But to me, nothing beats the purity of Hyper Fighting. And yes, when I was 12 I played SF1 at the local arcade and loved it. Now days I can even pull off the specials pretty regularly. I was 14 when I first played SF2, and so I am a bit old school. This may be a big reason why I love the purity of the original SF2 games over any other incarnation.
are you serious? alpha 3? lol
Next to MvsC2, A3 is the most broken capcom game, i would say.
have you ever played A2?
A2>>>>>>>>>>>>>A3
What i hate is that, just because A2 never had a descent port to console is overlooked, most people remember A3 for the ps1 release.
the only good port a2 had was in sega saturn and ps2 alpha anthology.
go to ggpo and play some a3 japanese players, and prepare for infinite fest.
Edit: oh, you are beign sarcastic… because no one can hate ST… oh well. my post is dedicated for all the people who praise A3.
Ok in terms of balance all the SF games are fucked to hell with the possible exception of HD Remix and SFIV so hopefully you guys aren’t using balance as one of the criteria.
For me it’s Alpha 2.
It was an evolution of SF2 but got rid of alot of the things people hated like throw loops. But even then that game had it’s own serious issues. Fuckin 80% life CC’s for one thing.
EmblemLord: Actually, though it has a lot of extreme counter matchups, original ST is more balanced than most games in one crucial area - every single character has a losing matchup somewhere. Even GG can’t say that…
Don’t forget about HF, either - character/matchup balance is one of the reasons a lot of OGs hold it in higher regard than ST.
I got 100% by a rolento player in a real game, that was fucked up. But ST, remix and A2 for life, the most balanced, fast and aggressive SF games (excluding Vs series).
*A2 Gold *= *Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha * in Japanese Arcades
I thought the same thing but some of the more experienced A2 players tell me its not as good as it sounds despite stuff like requiring more meter to activate CC (good), raped some CC combos (good), takes more meter to Alpha Counter (good), taking away Chun Li’s bufferable mk (good, at least to me) but they apparently raped even the lower tier characters (like Rolento CC (?)).
I see their point but personally I think SFZ2A fixed a lot of crap that was wrong with high level SFA2 even if it does suffer from some typical Capcom ‘balancing’ (rape everything).
