Stream Monsters’ opinions/reactions more important these days…fucking shame.
good:
- a big influx of new players
- bigger and more tournaments
- streaming
- sponsorships allowing players to travel to more tournaments
- (near) arcade perfect ports of older games
- easier access to arcade sticks and their components
- network play included in most fighting games
bad:
- stream monsters
- stream monsters deciding on how worthy a game is to be streamed based on “hype”.
- some players only caring for the money (aka: “i don’t play game XXX, because i can earn more by playing game YYY”).
- Companies listening to the constant whiners (and death treats !).
- DLC for fighting games which is essential in order to play the full game.
good and bad depending on the situation:
- very early or constant patches (the mvc3 week 1 sentinel nerf, constant MK patching comes to mind). Again this is a bit a double edged sword, as it can be both good and bad that things get patched fast.Just depends on what gets patched.
not sure:
- games being made easier. Some people won’t like it, other people will. I myself don’t care if games become easier or not, as long as they don’t become entirely stupid and random. In fact, if they draw more people to the community, the better. I just hope that people who are now starting with easier games won’t be entirely put off from trying out some of the older or more difficult games.
This only really becomes bad when the developers listen to the wrong people. Also, some of the early patches (e.g. Sent nerf) are already decided/set in stone even before the game hits retail (either a last minute change that didn’t make the cut, or a PR stunt to show that they are patching the game).
facebook happen and killed messageboards
“20,000 people LIKE Shoryuken.com!”
Who are these “people” ? Why have I never seen them on here before?
!!
“20,000 people are watching the tournament”
Who are these “people” …
Why would you care about them in the first place?
Sponsors do
Roll back netcode slowly becoming the norm. The scene becoming a little more diversified and at the same time catering bad players even more.
I will defend Stream monstering though. If you think about it, isn’t it an extension of Marvel 2 spectators?
More misconception.

No, because they didn’t actually come and play.
Nice quote.
People,
ok just a youtube “person”
will complain on a Gootecks video that the buttons and stick are too loud.
Back then arcades were at the cutting edge of gaming. And FGs were one of the main genres in arcades. But video games was much more niche in general.
These days arcades are much reduced and generally behind in tech. FGs are a niche genre on consoles (even more so on PCs). But gaming is much more mainstream than before.
So FGs have gone from a big fish in a small pool to a little fish in a big pool, I guess.
I hate to disagree with you cause I like you but…
you say all that like Justin wasn’t the end boss of MvC2
Except that Justin never switched to low tier teams simply because a legion of faceless morons kept complaining about him running Matrix.
no but he did switch to magneto/storm/capcom for a bit because it was too easy.
lets be real, if MvC2 had came out now, we’d see the same shit. people still running cammy/sent/ken or something way past the time they should. Character loyalty is cute, but winners are sexy. It’s just that the FGC is now filled with people who would take a 6 over a 9
“I went 0-2 against Justin Wong in casuals! Ok, I’ve accomplished all the goals I have as a fighting game player. No more fighters for me. When’s Gooteck’s Laugh show?”
where as before, might’ve gone like this.
“Fuck, I went 0-2 against Wong! In casuals?!?! Fuck that! I’m gonna grind harder when I get home and fuck him up next time I play him.”
More people = more people are at a higher level.
Outside of the guides from the net, the curve for fighting games has always been high.
It seems to me that more scrubs and nub-lets place higher on the curve.
I am below scrub/even n00b tier. I kinda liked sf4, but haven’t really liked any games that much. ummm… yeah.
