Whether or not you want to agree that the genre has been shuffling along between 2001 (CvS2) and 2009 (SF4), something in these past three years since SF4 was released HAS been different.
So what do you think it is? More attention given, more interest from players to build big communities, or just plain old more games (this generation before and after SF4 as far as fighting games go was like night and day to me; prior to SF4 all I can really think of for PS3/360/Wii was VF5, DoA4, T5: DR and SC4)?
i dont understand, are you just looking for a trivial list? anyone with eyes can see more people are playing fighting games than they were in the 2000’s and developers are making more fighting games in response.
In reallity the only thing that it has changed (speaking only about fighting game makers) is that Capcom released new games, and as usual the people who are only aware of capcom games flooded to them.
Add that those new games now have Netplay, something that prior 2009 was not mandatory on FG’s (For example VF5 on PS3 didn’t have online mode), plus it was until 2009 that other companies besides Namco an Sega made the jump to the current gen to develop their games (and no, contrary to the ridiculous belief, is not thanks to capcom, those games were being developed way before capcom announced sf4).
The factors that have changed that can be considered the more important is that now there is an increasing interest on the esports, plus coincidentally the technologies for streaming became more accessible and more reliable around 2008/2009 as well, the same goes for those new social media, they became more common used around 2008/2009.
Actually, if you look at the list of games released by year, you can notice that is not like we are getting more games than before.
A lot of the recent games have been made to be more accessible to new gamers. People have been complaining about stuff like Ultras, Xfactor, and in Blazblue, sheer all around scrubby play mechanics. People have also complained that the way characters dash in automatically in HD mode in KOF13 is scrubby, but at least that game requires far more skill than the rest.
As for the reason there has been more fighters coming out lately? I dunno. If not for the aforementioned factors…Coincidence?
Every time i read “the genre has been shuffling along between 2001 (CvS2) and 2009 (SF4)” i remember SRK is a North American Capcom-related website. KOF2K2 was more bigger in the world that SFIV and UMVC3 combined .
Its because Capcom FG’s are like having sex with an ex girlfriend. Comfortable, pleasing, and regrettable once you’re done with it. SRK’ers just love to stay in that metaphorical vagina.
patches, and the internet allowing casual fans voice to be heard.
a bunch of people who just “like” fighters have a stronger voice than those actually live, love, and breath fighters (regardless of how good they are)
Patches hurt the most imo, followed by youtube… you can sit at home play online with a A rank and feel like you know what to tell capcom about how to make a fighter.
Also if your game doesn’t have a entertaining hype man or a top player that dominates the competition its not gonna keep the stream viewers interest which in turn is gonna kill hype and cause lower numbers for the game.
Over all the scene has more information, but is much more soft.
No one plays to win anymore really, even top players are kinda selling out, not picking top tier and what not… I hope IPL $$$$$ is enough to make people really play to win.
This. It’s disheartening to see top players switch teams/characters simply due to stream monsters. For example, Chris G could have kept his streak on Big Two going if he just kept with his Morri/Doom team, but lost it when he switched to a Phoenix Wright team. I hate how stream monster/casual mentality has made it so that top players who stick to top tier characters/teams can often get labeled as “villains” nowadays.
