I think SRK should seriously consider throwing a team tournament for any of the solid 4 games. (Marvel, 3rd Strike, CvS2 and GGXX or T5 whichever is more solid)

We’d probably want as close to the original arcade version of Vampire Savior 1 as possible, correct? IIRC, the dipswitch menu has preprogrammed settings to set for original arcade release, final arcade release, etc., so it shouldn’t be too difficult.
http://www.geocities.jp/shu180sx/ This site is the most thorough rundown of the PS2 collection’s dipswitches I’ve come across. It’s in Japanese, but it should prove handy for deciding what settings would be best for tournament use.
(Dang, I need to get that collection now that I have a PS2… then a decent controller, and I’ll be all set!)
I have a bias against ssbm. But it sure would grab the attention of alot of players. I wont say Im for it as a high level fighter. The only reason I would vote for ssbm is to bost the regestration up. another 100+ players that dont play tekken/sf/ggxx would bring in over $2000 into EVO’s pocket. And they need every penny to keep EVO going.
So I would have to say yes. But only for the money.
Also I do have the Vampire Savior CPS2 as well. If at EVO I get enough people asking I would be more then happy to throw it on for you.
jojo’s bizarre adventure would make a nice crazy little optional/side game
and of course in my twisted dreams a doujin game woudl somehow get the popularity to have a little tournament run for it
3s
cvs2
mvc2
ggxx#r
st - ce please ;o
ssbm
t5
from what I have seen, 3s, mvc2 and ssbm will bring you your largest followers.
so is DOA4 actually good this run around? cuz 2 and 3 was bullshit IMO
co sign
this is the fucking truth
Besides the obvious games
I think Super smash brothers melee would do really good at EVO. We have local gaming tournaments in town (follow the link http://x-topia.cjb.net/). And we get a lot of people coming out for it. So i think if we get that much people out for our tournament. Evo should have no problem doing the same.
Team tourneys suck D:
singles all the way!
Where are the vids from this? it seemed like a decent idea but i think the jury is kind of out on how this is gonna play out.
IIRC a major tournament has never replaced singles with a team tournament, so that would be uncharted territory. The advantages in time and organazation are certainly something to consider, but we should also consider how it changes the event and whether there will be new problems.
It’s an interesting idea, and if anyone wants to participate, or test out the idea please post up.
street fighter CHAMPION EDITION ALL THE WAY
and possibly super smash brother i wouldnt mind that…
SSBM.
nuff said.
I’m a person who sometimes likes to think outside the
box and go non-traditional. I suck at fighters and I don’t
mind it either. Fighters are a genre I play for fun mainly
and not for major comp. Casual gamers such as myself would
love to see something along the lines of the following:
A Bomberman Game: It’s a shame that this game really doesn’t
get as much acknowlegdement as it used to back in the day.
Like fighters, this is a thinkers game that requires quick reflexes
and skills. If you’d already played me online in a Bomberman
game you know why I picked this one.
Jak X: Combat Racing/F-Zero GX/Mario Kart (GC) (somethink of the like)
I got this one (Jak X) on PS2 and it would be great for casual race fans
like myself who aren’t into super real racers like Gran Truismo or PGR.
…More than likely games like these won’t appear (…ok, they WON’T appear)
,just voicing an opinon, that’s all.
CE ain’t all that great. I don’t like dying from two tiger uppercuts and a bitchslap from Sagat.
Alpha 3… cause I said.
only because you don’t have a team
Keeping in mind that:
a) anything that’s gonna appear on the dvd will be console only
b) more than 9 official games spells trouble
Here are the games that deserve a spot imo:
MVC2 - obvious: comp.
CVS2 - obvious: comp.
3S - obvious: comp.
GGXX#R (or Slash if it’s out on console) - obvious: comp.
ST (pick a version, DC, PS1, HSF2:AE with only ST chars allowed) - obvious: comp.
T5 (or T5DR if it’s out on console) - obvious: comp.
SC3 - obvious: comp.
VF5 if it’s out on console - not as obvious as the others, but I think there’ll be enough comp to justify its inclusion.
SSBM - I don’t play the game, I don’t like the game, but the game clearly has massive comp. It should definitely be included if at all possible for the reasons CigarBob mentioned.
Here are the games that do not deserve a spot imo:
Any version of SF2 that’s not ST - not enough comp. I think that even HSF2:AE with every version of every character allowed would get a lower turnout than ST in ANY form.
Any game that was on the “maybe” list last year - clearly not enough comp. None of those games have become significantly more popular since then.
DOA4 - come on. Be serious. Dinosaurs and cheetahs chase you around and attempt to devour you in this game. No one wants to see that shit at evo. Almost every other game that’s been mentioned in this thread deserves a spot over DOA4. I’d opt for Senkou no Ronde over DOA4, and it’s debatable whether SnR is even a fighting game.
TTT - extremely low turnout last year and everyone was rusty as hell. Please let this classic game rest in peace and maintain its legacy.
Anything made by SNK - enough with that shit. Seriously. The results of last year’s “maybe” list should have been a clear indication that you guys are eviscerating a dead horse at this point. Bear in mind that this has nothing to do with the quality of SNK games, but rather the low turnout that ANY SNK game would get at evo.
Games like T4 and SC2 - ?? just stop. I’m pretty sure this thread is for practical suggestions only.
I think that about covers it. Once again, just a single opinion to take into consideration.
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
NeoGeo Battle Coliseum
Samurai Showdown Tenkaichi
Those games won’t hit US shops until maybe late 2006, BUT if you can use the Jap versions which are gonna be released soon for the PS2, that would be great.
Well I say for obvious comp:
I think that should do it.
Remix: Oops, I forgot ST. Do that.
I would also be down with some official team tourneys. That would be tight!
so i’m actually gonna say something about this… I don’t think the tournaments should be in team format BUT i do believe we should have team tournaments and see which one is a more popular format this year. Yes team tourneys are very fun and all the rage in japan but the tournament is fun as it is and doesn’t need the team element to be front and center. So yeah, back to team tourneys. Official team tourneys this year for sure, I was looking at all of the cvs2 teams that were going to compete this year and it would have been one of the best tourneys i’ve ever seen if it actually followed through.
The format right now where 2/5 people go on to the second day is probably the perfect balance right now. Everyone has at least one friend in their group that has a story to tell and made it to second day and gets his bragging rights for the year.
I would like to know if this game list is secure for this year
3s
cvs2
mvc2
tekken 5.2
I’m assuming these 4 games are the most popular in america right now and are 100 percent sure for evo 2k6, also I believe vegas is the optimal place for evolution. WIZARD: If any of these games are in jeopardy of not making evolution this year, please let me know asap so I can get whatever community actively involved in showing their importance. Although the drive was a bit longer for everyone I’m pretty sure the majority of people enjoyed having a super crazy all encompassing weekend. The hotel choice, which I was opposed to at first, ended up being nearly perfect. It was off the strip but not toooo far from the strip and the hotel itself was way nicer than any hotel that i’m going to be paying for on a regular basis. CVS2 2/3 whole tourney and then 1 game finals was super whack. CVS2 2/3 would have taken way less time than st with all the confusing ass button switching going on. OK ENOUGH GETTING SIDETRACKED
These games I feel deserve to be in the 100 percent category but could have problems
ST
Guilty Gear Slash
TTT
First of all, cigarbob says he can provide all of the cabinets for st and thats putting a whole hell of a lot of responsibility on one person. However because he’s willing to do it for the sake of saving st and keeping it as authentic as possible, I think he has enough creditility to be given a shot. If you want to keep it purely console there are 4 options… keep it on ps1 (no) bring back the dc version (maybe) switch to only using super and st characters in ae (maybe) or switching directly to hyper street fighter 2 (maybe). I personally think the ps1 version was responsible for making this the first ever boring st finals to watch. On dreamcast I thought it was still plenty fun to play and watch even if it’s not arcade perfect. Just using st characters in ae seems a bit funky to me since throw timing and priority seems completely changed in my little experience between the games. Switching to hyper sf2 is a crappy idea for the fact that the only reason we’re really keeping st is to keep in a part of our history and show that the level of play needed for that archaic game is still amazing. Changing to hyper sf2 changes the game so much that we might as well be playing a3 or something. SO my 2 cents into this and the actual point i’m trying to make is this:
We should have registration for Super Turbo, and all of those who are actually registered will be allowed to vote for which way they would like to play super turbo, with majority winning. Prior to this we should have interviews with advocates of each situation, and get as much knowledge as we can out to the gaming public and let them know what the top players in the game think is best for the game. Of course, if cigarbob can get an arcade setup together, that might be the best solution.
I’ve actually thought about this and I think a 3 on 3 with a 15 dollar entry fee might be the best thing for st this year. Yes this runs contrary to what I said earlier, but at the same time st has almost become an exhibition game. There are only a select few american players who play the game seriously anymore, and I know if it was only 5 bucks a piece to enter and have a good time with my friends, I would definitely enter ST this year with 2 randoms. I mean, there are a lot of serious st players but the amount of players that pretty much make any game. lowered cost and that kind of “oh hell we’ve all played sf2 at one time or another lets enter just for the hell of it” mentality are what could save st.
Guilty Gear Slash should definitely be the game that we use this year whether there is an American release or not. Modified/Japanese ps2’s running ggs could be pricey but i’m sure enough players across america would be willing to bring their copies to evolution. An American release makes this game an obvious entrant into evolution. Guilty gear players don’t want to play #r anymore and I don’t think we should make them even though it’s a lot easier to get copies of it.
TTT- I dunno how the tekken community feels about this, but since we’re paired with TZ.com now and this seems to be like their ST, i say it’s fine to keep.
Games to consider
Soul Caliber 3
DOA 4
Whatever Mortal Kombat is the newest one
Ok here lies the problem… These games outsell every game we play and as such it means there are a hell of a lot of casual gamers playing these games. With a proper amount of advertising through srk word of mouth, we could probably get together tourneys for these games that are FILLED with scrubs but as large as 3s was this year. In fact I think it’s possible to get 1000 people together for sc3 or mortal kombat and that could be one of the best things for the fighting game community even though my personal opinion is that both of those games are super whack.
Games that COULD be admitted but probably shouldn’t
KOFXI
VF4:evo (or vf5 if it’s out by then)
Alpha 3
Without playing them, i’m just going to say that they are good games because there is a lot of competition in japan for them. However american gamers don’t play either of these games and if we can’t get at least 100 people a piece for these games I don’t think it’s even worth having.
Games that don’t have a chance and shouldn’t have a chance
MOTW/KOF98/KOF02/KOF03- this is a capcom themed tournament featuring whatever other games happen to be popular (3d games/guilty gear/New KOF?) so I don’t think we owe anything to the hidden snk community of america because evo is not an snk nostalgia tourney. I’m sorry to any kof players here but theres no way in hell you can get a serious tourney with as many players as we can get for street fighter games. This is not me being a hater this is me being realistic.
CFE- as much as i wished everyone game this game a shot (even though it’s shitty), it doesn’t have any serious players
VF 1/2/3-see kof above
melty blood- no american plays this, don’t try to make an argument for it
Alpha 1/ Alpha 2- A2 is fun but we have a3 to replace it
WW/CE/HF- We have ST which makes these games obsolete, you can try to argue this, but all of the good players abandoned those old games for st before they abandoned st. There really is no argument to be had here.
Darkstalkers series- Once again, no one in america plays this, even less so than kof and vf.
SC2-made obsolete by sc3
If I forgot to mention your favorite fighting game, theres a good reason for it, it really just doesn’t deserve to be up there.
Shit I didn’t think I’d end up giving this thread this much thought but I feel pretty strongly about this.
