Firefox and not downloading random crap from the internet. I also work in IT and haven’t ran AV in years.
How is anti-virus going to protect you from a hax0r? Hopefully he’s running a firewall.

Super Anti Spyware is the best one I’ve come across. I work in IT as a consultant and have used it numerous times in cleaning out viruses on clients’ computers that their Norton and Trend Micro don’t pick up. Plus, it’s got a crazy awesome name, you can’t go wrong!
I use to use avg, but have switched to avira for AV and like it much better. For spyware malwarebytes, and sometimes superantispyware.
Frankly, in my experience paid ones have caused more problems than they are worth. The slowdown on my father’s computer running Norton is ridiculous. It has a habit of erasing files without telling him too.
I run AVG, Spybot, AdAware and use CCleaner too. All free, and all good. Although I have read people saying Avira is better. One thing you’ll want to do when you install AVG is to omit the LinkScanner. I’m not sure if they’ve improved it but it crashed firefox all the time when I first installed it and is just a pain in general.
I see alot of people on here suggesting nod32, which is a good program but it is not a free, it only has a free trial. I don’t usually have a problem with people pirating software but the makers of nod are a small company who really needs all the income they can get. There are actual free programs ot there like AVG(not very good), Avira (to many pop ups), & Avast actual pretty good one of the top rated annoying voice that can be turned off).
Been using avast! for years… I really do feel like its the best out of all the free antispyware I’ve tried, including AVG. Sometimes AVG is such an asshole and will not quarintine the virus or do anything about it lol.
it gives you a popup when you update… my updates are set for like, 3am, when im never on, so it never bothers me… i cut my monitor on the morning, hit ok, and i never see it that day again.
but as said, AVG, Avira, and avast! are your choices. i think AVG falls behind a bit in tests, but its still good. I use Avira personally.
throw spybot and malwarebytes into the mix, and you should be ok… although the BEST free program ever for this kind of thing is Common Sense 2009
I use: Avast Home Edition, SpyBot, CCleaner
CCleaner isnt really an anti-tool so to speak.
I use it too though, for those who dont know, its a cleaning tool to get rid of a lot of files that can be cloging up your system, temporary files and such. it also clears out browser data, and un-needed registry entries. It has a section to allow you to disable startup items (which i LOVE using and not having to go into msconfig), as well as uninstall section. overall a simple but great program to have.
I use avira on my laptop and it does a good job but it pops up alot & I only turn on my laptop when I need it so the pop ups usually get in my way. I am sure it would be great on a desktop though.
they used to be good… i did get the professional version though but i uninstalled it and went back to avg and started to use avira
