I don’t think that would make that particular problem any better. I don’t really come here a lot, but when I do, I see a mix of fun threads with some serious shit that people posted up because they think others need to see it and start a dialogue. It feels kind of like two different personalities to a discussion and I don’t see how the rules for a place where we talk about stuff that doesn’t matter would be the same as where you would be expected to prove your point.
In other words, I’m not going to a Hockey game to get anyone’s opinion on the presidential election. So why use one set of rules for two different things?
If the forum was split, I’d hope that neither would have the word “general” in the title. Doesn’t every forum on the internet have a “General Discussion” or something ‘General’ on it somewhere? How about a cooler name that has its own personality, not one that says ‘Hey bring all of your habits from other places over to our house.’

[]gotta close down and redirect all off topic threads to GD. no point in having UMVC3 OTT, SG OTT, or whatever OTT when there’s an entire forum dedicated to off topic discussion. since most newer people treat this message board like 4chan, it will suck for the mods at first- but last time i checked, GD rules state: no one-word responses, no image replies. that gives mods free range to smack offenders.

I disagree with this. Part of the reason that each subforum has its own OTT is BECAUSE of the foolishness, elitism, and general tomfoolery of the GD and FGD forums. I don’t know a whole lot about the mods in those forums (except for the sometimes blatant favoritism) but it’s generally an unspoken rule that people avoid those two forums like the plague.
Super Threads are cool
Threads specific to a game or movie or event are cool
Some guys don’t like the vibe in this part in the site so they don’t step on any toes and just create their own lounge/OTT in their forum and let you guys do your thing and they do their own.
But, I give hitbox data.
I just messed with CvS2 recently. Which this things are on the arcade version of CvS2 4 characters per team is still possible, EX Grooves, along with the console characters, and the training stage)
besides rsigley, i don’t know anybody in GD that gets “blatant favoritism.” sometimes GD posters make jokes that non-GD posters don’t understand because they aren’t acclimated to the forum (or even acclimated to male bonding [no homo]). not everybody in GD are stone-cold douchebags, and some people do it as a joke. i’ve been here for 9 years and have never flamed a single person. i ever flamed someone, it would be taken as a joke (as it should) because most people understand that i don’t flame people. a mod would most likely ignore that post if it was reported (hopefully ). that’s not “favoritism” if the reporter didn’t get the joke.
think of GD as the classic way of making male friends: dudes rip on each other until they become a group. just because someone rips on you doesn’t mean they don’t like you; prove yourself to be likeable. Mr. Unbrockable proved himself unworthy by bringing attention to the fact that he is a member of this site and can leave. he implies that we have to put up with him because if we don’t we’ll have one less person on the site. that’s like some dude forcing a group of people to be his friend just because they all have English class at the same time. Also there isn’t any elitism in the FGD as far as I know. Just shit modding and too many kids pressing the report button because their itty bitty feelings got trampled on.
Almost every thread in FGD that I’ve seen is either flamebait material such as “Why don’t people like (insert game here)?” or the usual old men (Tataki, Hecatom, Shoultzula, etc.) crying, moaning, and bitching about how they hate the new games, while crying, moaning, and bitching about how nobody plays the games they like.
one thing that I guess you can do is make all the sticky threads into one thread with links to the others. that would help with the speed of things and not having to scroll halfway down to reach the new or hot topics. trolls should get banned for a day or two. Sometimes it’s funny, but some people go too far. If I think up anything else other than taking an explosive shotgun round to the complex bar, I’ll come back.
def a limit on gif posting, some people overdo that shit too friggin much…lol basically making it a bannable offense for rock to post. i dunno how you would even limit it but maybe anything over 1 gif needs to be spoiler tagged.
Not really much you can do…SRK is trying to go mainstream & make that fight money which in a business stand point i dont blame them…The site is dedicated w/ the new fighting generation…Us old folks either join them or stay grumpy at the SRK Lounge…There just way too many new posters that dilute GD & not to mention the regulars either left, are too lazy, or dont even care anymore to keep it real…I dont have a problem w/ new posters but a lot of them just have very thin skin…
GD seems to be full of people who “get it”. Dudes who know that stuff should just be taken with a grain of salt, and that despite being on the internet, a place for real conversation. That is what I dig about GD the most. There is a lack of LOL OMFG XD SO RANDOM posts, and the mentality that comes with that.
OTT threads are disposable. GD is not.
Improvement is sort of subjective. I think GD is great the way it is. However, I haven’t been on this forum very long and I have no tales of yore to compare it to. Do you think its an improvement to have more traffic here? Is it an improvement to have less stickies? Less super threads? Post size?
Possible improvements to not only GD, but SRK as a whole:

[]Removal of OTT threads to boost the traffic and utility of GD. The problem with this is that it really can’t be done all at once. Lets say you kill every OTT thread and tell all of those people they have to come to GD. What happens? GD vets are suddenly the minority, and GD turns into one giant OTT subforum full of image macros and XD’s. It would have to be done gradually, one OTT thread at a time, and give those people a chance to be broken in. So to speak. GD will put hair on your chest. GD made me a man. It should stay that way.
[]Heavier enforcement of image macro, and single word responses. These two things make threads disposable, and kill momentum. I don’t know how frequently people report these things vs how often they are enforced, but it should be stepped up.

I believe that GD has a friendly atmosphere, more so than the rest of SRK. I mean genuinely friendly, not the goofy “lol so random wesker jokes lolololol” friendly that some places provide, but I mean these people feel like my friends. People in GD will call you on your bullshit, they will be harsh, they will probably call you a busta more than once, but they will still fire up AE 2012 and play a few rounds with you. GD is about as real as this forum gets, and if you want to improve it, you have to let it stay that way while expanding.
