What Do You Do When Your ISP Threatens You?

Cut off her internet for a week and tell her to stop doing illegal shit.

This pretty much sums it up.

peerguardian2 is a nice bandaid, but you can’t block everything. There are companies out there that get hired to stealthily find this information.

Tell them to fuck off

It’s not illegal to download and they can’t prove you uploaded it

does anyone remember the story about that guy who used a p2p program to download something and he ended up downloading and sharing child pron without knowing and got sent to jail? lol

I remember back when I first started using the internet is like 92 or 93, usenet was awesome but my ISP had bad connectivity and big files were often missing parts when the posts showed up. Kind of a bad rap. But at the same time when I canceled their service about 4 years later I found out they never charged me once for their service.

That being said, I had no clue that people still used usenet still.

WTF, PAY to STEAL?? What kinda crazy moon-logic is THAT?!

pay for usenet?

??? ??? ?? ??? ??? ? ??? ??? ? ???

A lot of people get free usenet from their ISP without even knowing it. Almost all free usenet like that gets subed out to 3rd party giants like giganews and newshosting.

But yeah, I pay $10 a month for unlimited. Better than a $50 cable bill…

If she doesn’t have the movie in question, check if she’s using a router. If it’s unsecure, it’s possible that someone is leeching off her network and downloading the movie.

you know…I’m betting she DID dl that movie. It’s a movie women would like. Tell her to be more discreet about that shit. And make sure she’s not naive enough to still be getting her music from p2p networks.

well i’m behind the times, if torrent is old news what should i be using to download stuff?

Torrents are old news? That’s new to me. It’s how I watch 24.

To avoid in the future, have her use a private torrent site like Demonoid or IPtorrents. I sometimes use Piratebay for games and whatnot and never had a problem through them. Never use sponsored torrent sites.

Megaupload, Rapidshare, Mediafire…just google the name of what you want, and follow it with the name of any of those sites. You’re bound to find it in 10 minutes or less, and usually in a one-link dl.

See, I don’t recommend Megaupload, Rapidshit, etc. Mostly because of the tediousness in waiting to download multiple files, long wait times, and not knowing if some asshole planted a virus in one of the rars. At least on a private or semi-private site, members leave comments on the quality of the torrent so you know it’s legit.

Demonoid isn’t a private torrent site. It requires membership, but the torrents are 100% open. And just because you belong to a private torrent site doesn’t mean you can’t get caught.

This isn’t a notice of or intent to sue. I had to process shit like this all the time during the 4 years of my life I wasted as an IT support rep with an ISP. She’s being told to stop, and nothing more.

At the ISP I used to work for, this would count as a strike against a particular account. Too many notices and we’d suspend the account in question. Not sure if Rogers follows a similar policy.

Best advice: she should stop downloading movies and whatnot. Don’t forget that BitTorrent clients use downloaders to upload to other downloaders, meaning she is, by virtue of using such clients to download material, uploading as well.

Dr. B downloads his Mad Sexy directly into my rigid penis. 99.6% no homo.

someone from another board I visit just told last week that a new law was just passed that protects Canadians from threatening lawsuits from the US regarding downloading copyrighted downloads. I could be wrong or misunderstood but at least start there.

Word. And you’re FAR more likely to run into a torrent with a file that is a virus…usually that “get.codec” trojan.
