Is it really Combofiend’s fault? I don’t remember what suggestions he sent in for Ryu, but I do remember a Ayano blog where he said that the fans(Japanese I presume) wanted Ryu unchanged. Maybe that’s why we basically have the same exact Ryu in the Ultra loketest that we have in AE 2012.

The system changes help ryu out… They have to guess your wake up even on hard knockdown now and a lot of hard knock downs are getting removed. With ambiguous setups and safe jumps against ryu receiving nerfs, the neutral game that ryu was above average at is buffed by proxy. Footsies is what ultra is aiming for so until the exploits are discovered ryu shouldn’t move too much on the tier list, I think in ultra ryu is only going up in the tier list or maybe to put into better terms, enough strong characters are getting nerfed below ryu for ryu’s lack of buffs to be an issue… That is until the hitbox exploits, glitches and unintentional option selects are discovered, then, who knows where the tier list will go…
Even if Ryu is balanced, we want a fresh air after playing him for so long. Maybe a hitbox increase on cr.hp so it works after a jump in and 2 lights, like Oni’s, Sakura’s and others. Maybe a frame advantage on close mp to change a little his links. Something that wouldn’t make him too strong but could give more options to try new things.
Hopefully. He maybe one of those characters were ultra double combo will work well. Supposedly him having both ultra’s together will not take such a huge damage nerf compared to other characters.
I’ve kind of always considered Metsu Hadoken to be the “Be all End All” ultra for Ryu. IMHO it can pretty much do anything U2 can and can combo from almost everything.
Have you people seen the new Chun, Vega, and Hakan? Ryu is gonna get destroyed in these match ups. Vanilla Ryu needs to be brought back to even stand half a chance against these new top tiers.

-Super Trap(I really really miss this, I use to troll people with it)
-Escape tatsu(made the Gief match up so much easier)
-Could FADC his one hit 160 damage fierce SRK
Their is more but I felt those are the biggest four that he lost. The Super trap was BS, but I use to love having it so I could force certain characters to block fireballs because they couldn’t jump or FADC fireballs even at full screen lol. But yeah, Vanilla Ryu was both solid and had plenty of BS. This current Ryu is just that, solid.
Idk, theres a lot of damage talk in there, iirc everybody got the damage nerf bat in super… The only tool that it looks like ryu lost was escape tatsu… never saw the super trap actually utilized…

You already mentioned the ability to trade his fierce SRK so I didn’t want to reiterate that. But if you’re not counting damage then his biggest nerfs are taking away his ability to trade his fierce SRK into EX hado or Ultra, escape tatsu, and Super trap. The Super trap was his biggest lost IMO and it was utilized quite a lot, especially against non fireball characters.
It forced those characters to keep eating chip because nobody wants to take the damage. Even anti-fireball moves can still get hit by a late super cancel. Now Ultras are a different story, but at least against Ryu characters like Chun or Seth could not keep focus back dashing fireballs to build Ultra meter and avoid damage.
I think my fondest memory of the super trap was this one time that I faced a Abel player. It was the 2nd round(I lost the first) and I had a Super to begin with and he knew exactly what I wanted to do so he stayed as far apart from me as possible thinking he could focus fireballs safely from full screen to build Ultra. I noticed what he was doing so I waited until he focused the 3rd fireball before I let the Super rip and basically got nearly 500 damage out of it. I don’t even remember if I won the match but whenever I used that against people and rematched them they decided to stay in my face because a well timed Super trap just can’t be avoided by most of the cast without Ultra or specials that stay fireball invincible throughout their active frames(not sure if their are any to be honest).
Super trap made Ryu silly. If he had super, his opponent couldn’t really do anything until he baited it out. Had to block all fireballs. If he jumped or focused a fireball, super would punish from full screen. For anyone that isn’t clear, the super trap is that in vanilla SF4, Ryu could have his super and a fireball on screen at the same time.
That’s what happens when you have 90% of the people only thinking about themselves and their own character. Most of those people were not even posting on that site for the sake of the universal balance, just for the sake of making their mains better and nerfing the bad match ups or characters they hate. I thank the lord they only listened to 10% of them.
Some people say " Ryu’s fine! he’s perfectly balanced in v2012! But what they are not getting is that they are talking about how balanced Ryu is in v2012 NOT Ultra. Ultra is looking to be like a whole different game balance wise, and soposedly they have even more changes on the way? yeah Ryu might need like 2 more complimentary mini buffs, same with Yun. Viper was already B+/A- in v2012 after she got figured out, and she’s still getting nice buffs… Ken was B/B+ too…and look at him…

Totally agree. Characters who were balanced for v2012 wont be in Ultra. They’ll be too weak.
I hope Capcom doesn’t go overboard with the buffs for some of the characters and thinks of the “balanced characters” and rebalances them for
Ultra not 2012.

Ryu would basically have the new LOL combo. I’m guessing they added more juggle property to his EX DP so this could also mean that EX tatsu or j. MP fully connects as well. 3 bars is expensive but for nearly 600 damage with no links required, it’s well worth it. I assume the damage will still be ass if you juggle off of a regular DP, EX tatsu, or j. MP so that will help balance out the two so that people won’t always pick U2. But with that change I think I probably would just go U2 most of the time if I still m
