Thank you for this post.
Here is a quote from Shiro420 regarding a projected turnout for GG:
http://dustloop.com/forums/showpost.php?p=343870&postcount=5
I take it this was referring to GG only, as he posted earlier that projected attendance was 80-100 people for the entire event.
About 12-13 GG players from Calgary were planning on going / actually attended, so that would mean a local Edmonton scene of about 20 players. Which sounded about right given the GG scenes in other major western cities (Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary).
Now… I understand it’s important to hype one’s own tourney, but to flat out lie and say that 20+ locals will be in attendance, when your scene only has like 5-7 casual/anime players, is just a huge slap in the face to anyone coming from out of town who plays the game at a remotely competitive level.
From the vibe I got this weekend as well as on Dustloop, I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn when I say that none of the 80+ GG players located in the NW will be going to an Edmonton tournament for a long time.
In all honesty, while I don’t know a lot about our GGAC scene, our SFIV community barely has 32+ competitive players… Edmonton + Calgary having that many players is an absolute impossibility.
Edit: It’s actually kinda funny how everyone is totally pissed at the fictional Edmonton GGAC players, and totally praising the guy who made them up.
Edit #2: It’s even funnier how only one person (Sycho) has noticed.
haha shiro’s always been hyping up his tournies!!
isn’t there some kind of competitive gaming club at some random university in alberta?? the ggac crew at UBC is fucking HUGEEEEEE
like… combine all the capcom fighting games players and you have the ubc “competitive gaming club” which is smash + ggac
but smash is way bigger lol
edit: wow i just read the dustloop thread
i feel bad for you guys man… seriously… edmonton’s best players are sometimes outta the city or just aren’t that tight with shiro to give a shit about his tournies. look at jj_tactics in marvel. he wasn’t there, BC came first. BC’s alex hasn’t played marvel in 6 months too. haha sounds like calgary’s ggac has at least a community. but anyway, keep in mind… this is a SF tournament featuring guilty gear. i don’t think it has anything at all to do with the local gg scene. it’s like if i had decided to throw a KOF tourney and only gave a few posts on the local KOF scene in vancouver. nobody would show up and people would be pissed but it might not even be the KOF guys faults. i think shiro just threw together too many tournaments. he can only really represent the main capcom games
jj_tactics wasnt able to be there. if he was able to he definately would. he just got off a flight and cabbed it there saturday night just for some casuals, but then he had to leave on another flight on sunday.
whats wierd tho to me is that usually if people dont show they’d probably post right away about the reason they cant show up. ex, the ggac crew and/or the tekken crew. i havent seen any excuses or reasons why either edmonton group didnt show saturday and/or sunday.
I took a long time to write this, so I may as well post it in multiple places:
I think all of our problems stemmed from 3 things that can be easily fixed for future tournaments:
1. Don’t bite off more than we can chew: The original plan was to feature twelve tournaments. (To prove that I’m not exaggerating: SFIV, CvS2, MvC2, 3S, HDR, GGAC, Brawl, T5DR, TvC, XvSF, SC4, DDR). It’s impossible to get a decent turnout for half of these tournaments, let alone all twelve. Even if we did, there is no possible way for us to sustain that many people. This was trouble right from the beginning. The more things you have to juggle, the less likely that the important details will be handled properly. More events does not make a tournament better. If we kept it simple, we’d have 3-4 successful events, rather than one successful event and bits and pieces everywhere else.
The tournament was overly ambitious. It would’ve been more successful if it was simpler and more modest. We shouldn’t have marketed it as WCC2. We should have just marketed it as a Street Fighter tournament. SFIV just came out and it’s a huge hit, and we should take advantage of that. I think people are generally interested in picking up a new hobby, meeting new people and having a reason to be competitive. People are generally not interested in being the champion of Western Canada. The few that ARE interested in being the champion of Western Canada will end up making an appearance anyway.
2. Don’t make promises that we can’t keep: Out of the twelve tournaments we promised, we had singles tournaments in three of them. We projected 80-100 and advertised it, we had maybe 60 players. However, I think the worst case of it was when we told the GGAC community that we would have at least 32 people show up. If Calgary brought 10, Edmonton would have to double that. I don’t know anything about Edmonton’s GGAC community, but I can still tell you that we do not have 20+ competitive GGAC players who are willing to come to a tournament. It’s like the guy who says “everybody will be at my party” thinking that if everybody believes that everybody will be there, everybody will go, thus making his promise true. This never works. One small exaggeration costed Edmonton our reputation with the GGAC community and worse yet, costed countless hours and dollars wasted by those who travelled here. I guarantee that anyone who was involved in this or heard about this will NOT come to Edmonton for anything we host.
3. Divide the workload and responsibility: Two people can potentially run a tournament, but why use two when more people are willing to help? Everybody is good at something different and this should be taken advantage of. Shiro, you have an extraordinary ability to create and expand social networks. Paul, your work ethic and dedication is completely unrivaled. Calvin, you are one of the most selfless people I know and you naturally command the respect and trust of everyone around you. Kevin, you are a natural problem solver, master of numbering people and putting their names on horizontal lines and your ability to devour hashbrowns and bacon is scary.
Anyway, I had a fun time at WCC2. I’ll probably look back and laugh at it, make jokes about how much of a clusterfuck it was, and probably do it to purposely offend others, but I actually had a really good time. It was a gongshow for sure, but at least it’s something we can build upon.
Yipes is coming.
One of the things that bothered me was Shiro just fucking off and playing Tekken casuals when he’s supposed to be running 3s teams. I don’t even know who took over. I know Matt wanted to take over but I told him not to since we travelled here to play and not to run a touranment(Which is rare for him when he’s here). It also just seemed like a total lack of communication between the two. Like everyone else I appreciate the effort that was made but yeah it should have been run. For a while early saturday I was really regretting making the trip out but things improved a lot when things got started. Also how does ST:HD not get run. Singles had atleast 13 signups that I saw. Another reason why you should run one or maybe two tournaments at the same time is to have some tvs for casuals. Having pretty much all the team tournaments run at the same time was horrible as it delayed matches like crazy. Shifting between different games can get difficult.
Also yeah don’t post up tournaments if they arn’t happening. Team tournies are fun but they usually shouldn’t take precedence over singles. Unless theres a guarantee for a good turnout(SF4) then singles should be the only thing run.
I really enjoyed getting the chance to play players around my level as well. I learned a lot and will come back sometime and play you guys again. It was a pleasure to have gotten the chance to meet the BC guys. You guys are something else. I hope to someday maybe get close to that level.
I had tons of fun though just being able to hang out with new people with similar interests. You guys are awesome and even though the tourney itself wasn’t amazing I would like to come out again sometime.
Nyo… I was NEVER sapose to run 3s anything. I ran mvc2 singles and did my best helping run anything else i could. Check your facts before you point the finger at me.
Thanks for the post Kevin.
Justin is Coming!
My bad then. I saw you announcing the first round matches and figured you were running it. Who was running it then? Cause for a while there I was wondering what was going on.
Thanks for showing up man, always welcoming new faces
I was debating weither or not to join tekken. haseo and his group are BITCHES for not showing up for ggor tekken
I responded to this in the gg forums =(
Rather than posting 5 nonsense posts to PM, I’m trying to get in touch with the tournament organizers. Can one of the organizers shoot me a quick PM?
I’m looking for someone to help me put on a SFIV tourney at www.drivenshow.ca for Edmonton.
I shall see who I can find to run this. PM me. Thanks!
Also, suggestions on
As you can see, its a tradeshow so we will need ideas to make this big! I have no experience on this.
