Well...played SF4 for this first time today

To add more to that, here’s an excerpt from a Dave Sirlin article:

so he admits he hates parry and that somehow means he hates all of 3s and thinks it sucks?

parry is messed up but that’s what makes sf3 so different from all the other sf games. it’s not a guarantee that if you option select parry into your jump-ins or if you just bait for a parry that you’ll get it. it’s risky. you can see pros fucking up all the time when they try to parry. parry doesn’t equal win.
if sf3 didn’t have parry it would play almost identical to ST. we’ve had enough sf2 style games and it was time for a change. parry threw all the usual fb traps/guaranteed anti-airs upside down.

so potentially there are no guarantees in sf3 because of parry and every thing you do is a risk. this is where mind games come in and it’s a lot like poker to me. i love poker even though it’s not guaranteed that i’ll win every hand. you have to bluff your way to the top. trick the opponent into believing that you have a real nice hand or get him to risk even more by looking scared and take em for everything he’s worth.

i think that’s what makes 3s so exciting to play. that and the ridiculous execution for the flashier combos in the game make it seem even crazier. it’s almost not street fighter simply because of parry, and i’m totally ok with that.

funny thing is the OP wasn’t comparing 3s to ST but somehow and someway(every fucking time) this turns into a debate about why ST is almighty and 3s sucks.:arazz:

Re: Shitty.

good one asshole:woot:

The point most people bring up is that 3s’s parry ruins fundamental Street Fighter play. This in effect makes it less of an actual SF game.

Just like you said, “so different”. Of course, you could make a counter-point and say that we just don’t like 3s because it exceeds our comfort zone. But the fact is that 3s is as bad a Street Fighter as Hitler was a liberal. It’s an OK fighting game though.

Also, it is my belief that the worst thing about parry isn’t when people actually get it off, it’s the things people just don’t do because they are afraid of getting parried.

SF3 would play nothing like ST. Even without parry fireballs do shit damage, they don’t knock down airborne opponents, are punishable on block(sometimes even on hit), shoryukens and some supers get thrown(by normal throws), reversals get stuffed, you only get meter for projectiles if it touches the opponent, throws and special command grabs don’t come out on the first frame, throws can be broken for no damage, everything other than EXs are slow as hell, universal overheads still add an extra layer of homogeny…

You meant to say mix ups instead of mind games.

I’m guessing that it became a ST vs 3s thread because SF4 seems to be holding true to the fundamentals of SF2, yet SF4 is still an unknown commodity.

What you say about 3s is true. The problem is that we want chess not poker. 3s is a very organic game while the game in the series that got everyone waiting for a sequel was the exact opposite. Some people tried out 3s expecting a good fighter(like you). Others expected a good Street Fighter.

ok i agree with most of that. except throws. never liked option select throws but then again i like 3s so go figure

I don’t get why people just can’t like both games.

Of course I could possibly do that…but I love the hate to be brought. It separates men from the lil gremlins that steal the popcorn shrimp from my po boy when I ain’t looking. Honest and Fo’ truly…I like ST a lil better because when you whip a niggas ass good enough music speeds up, and black ass niggas start screaming “heeeeyyyy” in the back like the japs.

Nothing beats OG ST except playing Hyper Fighting.

well, I will say this much from experience, SF third strike fans wouldn’t be the way they are if the 3S wasn’t so unjustly shat upon all the time .really, is the game THAT bad that people have to resort to things they say about it? just read some of the nastiness, or is it because of what you said and the sf 2 fans can not stand the sf 3 fanboys SO MUCH that they could hate the game EVEN MORE because of these fanboys?

have street fighter fans TRULY been split apart because of sf 2 and sf 3? It seems that way, and I am no sf 2 fan, sf 3 fan.sf alpha fan, I am a STREET FIGHTER fan, and I’ll give them support no matter what but 3s most of all because it needs it the most.

If sf 4 TRULY wants to reunite all the fans again ,then it needs to play like BOTH games with its own style. it also needs sf 2 characters(check),sf alpha characters(check),new characters(check), sf 3 characters(nothing yet) to really help bring fans and the games into one fold like it should be. even for those who hated and disliked sf 3, I think the characters deserve a chance at least to be in sf 4 and future installments.

Oh, I’m not arguing for OS throws. I was arguing for throw softening instead of throw breaking.

Lol, I could probably tolerate 3s if Ryu, Ken, Chun and Akuma weren’t in it and an airhorn and pixel censor played to cover up the words “Street” and “Fighter”. “It’s Third Strike y’all. It’s BAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

If Capcom is willing to act like atrocities such as Q, Twelve, Sean, and parrying never existed then honestly I’m not going to object.

edit: forgot about Necro and Remy

I’ve never had a problem with 3S the game really. There’s stuff I like about it and stuff that’s just dumb, every game has that.

It’s the 3s only players that make me hate it, those who proclaim the game to be better than everything else and hail it like it’s the holy grail of fighters. A game without flaw or blemish or glaring problems with it when everything about the game from the tiers to tourney results tell you this isn’t the case.

3S is a good game. It’s a bad “Street Fighter” though.

Oh, I MOST DEFINITELY would be down with Dudley, Q and Ibuki getting in SF4.

Yes, yes it is.

Listen, the fact of the matter is, ST, SF4, or 3S, at least we’ll never be as bad as the GG players.

Let’s all make fun of them instead.

Nah man.

I’d hit one or two of em.

Who am I kidding? Three of them.

Lol at this thread turning into serious discussion. Can’t you guys just admit that guess parries are DEEP STRATEGY and ST is “NOT AS GOOD AS DAIGO PARRY” ?

There’s plenty of top players that don’t like certain games, that they place really well at. They just play cuz they do well in the game and theres money, and thats also where the comp is at. Ask justin if he likes ST, I bet he says he hates it, and hes a consistent top 8 placer at that game now.

A bigger, and funnier example is Mike Watson. If anyone was at evo this year, you know what I’m talking about. In his pre finals interview video, he said “The thing I like about 3s is…Ah who am I kidding? 3s fucking sucks!” And proceeded to give it the middle finger.

That shit had me rolling. But in all seriousness. Not all top players like their respective games. They just happen to play them well.

Bottom line, 3s is its own game, st is its own game, sf4 is it’s own game. People expecting each game to play exactly like their favorite game, is always gonna be disappointed. Which is unfortunate. A lot of really good games get passed up because of this mindset. But everyone has their opinion.

Yeah, but Watson is old! If you had asked him what his favorite character to play was, he probably would’ve shouted something about Medicare and then ran you over in his Oldsmobile!
