In classic SFII, I honestly didn’t believe Zangief could do SPD as a human player because that would be “too cheap.” My older brother insisted it must be possible, and had heard tales of people actually doing it in a match by accident!
We tried several codes at our local arcade, but nothing worked. Finally, my brother gave up and maniacally flailed on the joystick and buttons and out of nowhere, Gief did the SPD!!! Both of us were in shock.
We still couldn’t figure out how to do it long after that, but at least we knew it was possible.

Shit. Back in my day, sonny, we didn’t need no CASH to make us feel bad when we lost. Loss of pride was enough of a drive. Money matches, IMO, are one of the many banes of modern SF. When we wanted to throw down in the old days, we all walked to 7-11 in the snow, uphill, and went at it. And then bought milk while we were there for 5 cents!!!
