After Ed talked I overhead someone asking about other situations like the Abel toward+mk one Ed mentioned. Those kinds of situations are important to know of course, but I want to point out that Ed’s talk wasn’t just about acquiring facts, it was about trying to instill a kind of critical thinking that few people develop naturally but that lots of people can learn. Identify situations, analyze them, and come to conclusions about what your best options are to prevent them, to force them, or to get out of them. If all you’re doing is asking about situations, that is, if you’re just looking for facts, then you’re not just doing it wrong, you’re barely even doing it at all.
In other words, he’s the fisherman; he can give you a fish and you’ll do better with it than you would have without it, but you’d be much better off if instead of just taking a fish you also learned how to fish yourself.
