Wow, nobody plays Guile? I like Guile too. I’d play Fei Long but I cannot for the life of me figure out how his rekka ken punches work. Like, they don’t even combo half the time. I suck.
Alex’s blanka makes me laugh so hard I can’t keep playing.
BITE EM! BITE EM!!!
edit: aren’t the fei long attacks like yang’s mantis slashes or something?
DAWolf runs Blanka. I play “asshole Guile” as Julien puts it. Peachy and zass both rape with Dic. Julian is the self-proclaimed “Top Tier Cammy” user. That just leaves Honda and Gouki/Akuma. You’re welcomed to practice Gouki to your heart’s content, but I don’t think there are any meaningful venues where you can strut your double air fireballs.
I caught Julian DEEP with Guile’s super yesterday. It took a whole 15% off of his boxer. For the same motion, Claw’s super knocks off roughly 40%. Plus, you don’t lose meter when you feint with Claw. Guile’s got a projectile, and an AA that can’t be crossed (to lose charge), but all his pokes have horrid start-up and recovery. He deals a touch more damage than Claw, and has meatier combos. But I just end up Sonic Boom’in into tick throw when I play him. On top of all that, he hovers jumps while wearing a “You have 3 chances to DP me” sign while in the air.
You’re right Keith, because I recall playing against your Guile in the past tourneys we’ve had. You’re no Guile player, if you’re a Guile player, I’m a Dee Jay player. Peachy doesn’t really play ST (or anything else for that matter) like that.
EDIT-I’m talking about concentrated mains. Not “yeah I pick this nigga randomly for fun” type shit.
I blame the shitty Tekken stick for the low shorts instead of short slides. I had fun that night though, your commentary is always hilarious Mandel. I don’t know, Guile looked hella buff in the hands of Kurahashi and Muteki, but I’m not sure anyone here is at the insane level. I was stunned when Julien said Kurahashi was at the arcade at 6am.
sighs Honda it is then. Fawk.
I’d play Gouki but there is really no pride in that. OMG DOUBLE FIRE BALL LOW FORWARD HURRICAN SRK! I WINZ! Yeah, boo.
So really, my choices are Honda; only cool thing about him is his command throw and his hundred slap zoning cause HeadButt gets owned by the stupidest this. Oh, and he can "store his super. That means I gotta learn jump in HK xx super (harder than it sounds). Or learn Dic’s; who can’t charge his super, super xx sj cancel into mp>mp x’s 2. Fawwwwk
Can’t I just pick Ken?
Yep, caught me bullshitting.
In essence Stuart, you can use whoever you want to use. If you’re trying to fight the good fight (which helps Seattle have a variety in character usage) then use someone that isn’t being played. Honestly I suggest you play whoever you want to. I just think the Dee Jay mania is super gay. It doesn’t make too much sense if people are training for Evo but whatever. If you look at my character selection, I use Chun Li/Ken. However, I play Chun Li/Ken in just about every non Marvel game (A2, A3, ST, 3S, Chun in CvS2) so that’s why I use them (just so happens that not too many people play those two up here in ST).
Do people want me to quit using DeeJay? There seems to be a lot of hate on him, and I don’t want to hinder anyone’s chances at Evo or anything
I dunno, I wouldn’t have a problem with picking up someone else
edit: on second thought, I would have a problem picking up someone else. I’ve spent too much time studying my matchups with DJ to just drop him like that
I don’t know what to say about this. I understand that counter-picking is important and that people need to know how matchups work, but this whole push to play specific characters is complete bullshit.
Just do what you want to do.
That being said I don’t think everyone should play dj, nor do I think everyone should play cammy or whatever. I think a diverse scene is best, both competitively and for fun. I seriously doubt someone playing a character that isn’t claw/boxer/dictator/sagat is going to automatically disqualify everyone from evo.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: most tourney level players know how to play all characters at least somewhat.
What happens when you go to evo and people are using gimmicks to get by the qualifiers? I think everyone picking the same top tier and nothing else is fine, but game knowledge doesn’t always stem from that. Some characters are better to start off with to learn certain things, and then you can transition to using that skill with someone else. Also, playing a large variety of characters gives you a better picture of what they are capable of and what they are trying to accomplish this. I feel this is important regardless of their place in tiers. In fact learning to analyze low level tiers and determine weaknesses is a skill you can refine and apply to when you start fighting higher tier characters.
Not trying to piss you off or anything mandel, because it seems like you are already kind of mad about something, but I feel that different schools of thought breeds a better overall scene.
My mains are Ryu and Deejay, but if I ever get back and end up playing w/ you guys I use honda or something like that, just so people know what to expect/how to counter and shit. Even though in a sense it won’t mater cause I’m not coming back till mid/late September. D:
So I’ve been using O.Sagat. Am I awesome now because I just throw Tiger Shots all day? Or is there actually more to it? =P
This is Mandel
People aren’t tripping like that. I already posted that I wasn’t trippin like that, it’s just hella people using him is kinda ugly. But whatever, everyone, use whoever you want. I was only posting for the sake of character variety! =]
Gray Fox-I think you misunderstand. I merely posted from the standpoint of variety. I don’t really care who anyone uses to be honest, but it’s sorta dumb if hella people pick the same shit. I’ve seen Julian post about how he only knows how to fight like 25% of the cast and I feel the sameway. Maybe my jokes were in poor taste? You guys really thought I was that upset? Jeez…cmon now! But I said it once, I’ll say it again…
USE WHOEVER YOU WANT!
BREAK THE FEEL OF PEER PRESSURE!
IF YOU LIKE DEE JAY, PLAY HIM TO YOUR HEART’S DESIRE!
-Mandel
it’s me in the place to be
So this is Mandel again, this was taken from the NW competitive standings for gaybats thread.
That’s all I was trying to say earlier in a JOKINGLY fashion. I understand that I have angry_blk_god as my user text, but on the internet, I’m not very angry at all unless I’m in a flame war. So now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
I hear you man. I just want to make sure people don’t feel pressured to use characters they aren’t comfortable with when they do just fine with the characters they’re using. I dunno what I’m even getting at or why I give a shit. It’s like we’re saying the same thing anyway. Variety…mm…mmm…bitches!
All things said, I’m still all for variety. :karate:
raises hand I use Cammy! If I end up in a disadvantageous matchup though (Dee-Jay, Boxer, etc), I’ll pick either Claw or Chun.
Shouldn’t we focus more on beating Top/upper/mid tier characters first? Make the characters from mid-tier down backup characters and counter-picks. That way, it will be practice for Evo in gameplay and pre-game strategy as well.
Tiers (copied from ST wiki)
Top:
O.Sagat
Dhalsim
Boxer
Claw
Upper:
Dictator
Chun
Ryu
Middle:
Deejay
Guile
Ken
Lower-Mid:
Fei-Long
Honda (Gets killed by fireballs, but does OK against 'Sim, and owns everyone without one)
Blanka
Bottom:
Zangief
Cammy
T. Hawk
Wow, our second ranked player cruises with 2 of the so called bottom tier characters. What does that say about our scene?
Some very disheartening things…
Edit: But our first and second ranked players are pretty good. Like I said, counter-picks. Even the low tier chars can beat top tier characters because of an advantage or two.
It’s not about color, it’s that they’re not very immediately welcoming of people they don’t know well. But his mom has warmed up a lot to me lately. Uhhh, his dad has still never said a work to me AFAIK.
Peachy has beaten me before with dictator unfortunately.
