HoN >>>>>> LoL by hellla HoN completely owns that game
I approve of this THREAD!!!
Been playing this game since beta. I play Galio, Rammus, and Kog Maw if anyone wants to get games in.
GT: DeLUCIFER
Fuck off Nate!!
should check out the LoL thread in general discussion, but ya add me up
IGN: Babygrenades
People seem to like HoN.
But is there no demo? I’m psyched that there’s a Mac client, but I don’t want to fork over $30 without trying out at least trying out a demo first.
Unfortunately, we missed out on the beta. I have heard (and I mean this in a positive way) that a really good way to get into HoN or to know if you’ll really like HoN is to play DotA.
The graphics on HoN are also supposed to be really good.
That said, someone should make a “We need more HoN players thread”
KILLS DO NOT WIN MATCHES
I’m still “not very good” at the game, but I have to share this story and act like I know what I’m talking about.
Here are the stats of a match I had tonight (remember I’m only at level 14):
**Blue Team
Shen (me) 13 kills / 2 deaths / 8 assists
Kennen 13 kills / 11 deaths / 11 assists
Annie 4 kills / 7 deaths / 3 assists
Xin Zhao 8 kills / 3 deaths / 7 assists
Twitch 5 kills / 7 deaths / 9 assists
Red Team
Master Yi 0 kills / 7 deaths / 3 assists (don’t ask me what that’s about)
Tristana 15 kills / 4 deaths / 1 assist (definitely one of the good players)
Zil 3 kills / 8 deaths / 3 assists
Ryze 5 kills / 13 deaths / 3 assists
Annies 5 kills / 11 deaths / 5 assists**
So those are the kill/death/assist stats… Red Team won(!).
So what happened?
The kills on my part were mostly business as usual kills. I don’t try to go too far out of my way to kill enemy heroes. But in this game, I happened to get a lot of kills and assists (Shen should have a lot of assists). The enemy team’s players were not good at fighting (except for Tristana mainly and I’d also say Zil was pretty okay, not great but okay).
To be honest, half my team wasn’t the best at fighting either (and I don’t think I’m that great in general myself–though I outdid myself in this match).
But at some point, partly because I am getting a lot of kills and I am causing some havoc on the right side of the map and a bit in the middle–my team ends up having a very strong midgame. The early laning phase edged in our favor, but our midgame was dominating and I was apparently doing well.
The problem is, a strong midgame is not worth anything if you don’t take advantage of it and try to finish the match.
My team got greedy, they started chasing enemy heroes like crazy. I was trying to push. I would say that Xin was also trying to push at times too. But that was mainly it. The rest of our team were with us during the group fights, and then went chasing weak enemy players around the map to either get ganked or to let them know they could have 3-4 of their heroes push our towers.
Their team slowly took down towers. It was so subtle and slow over the course of the match that it was probably a complete surprise when an inhibitor went down.
Even by the end of the match, I’d say we had a strong level advantage.
So here are some tips I give to players out there in the low levels like me. I could be wrong, but this is what I currently think when I play the game:
**
-
You don’t win by killing. Kills help. You win by destroying the enemy base, it’s that simple.
-
If I’m chasing the enemy and I can’t picture myself taking him/her down in like 8 or 10 seconds, it’s not worth trying to kill them. The reasons will be listed in bullet points as well. To be honest, use 5 seconds–you have 5 seconds to kill them. It’s probably better to live by that.
-
When you chase an enemy, it’s likely you’re going to run into a gank.
-
Most of the time, harassing is good enough. If you’re chasing your opponent, it’s probably because their health is quite low. If their health is low, they will most likely be “out of the game” for a decent amount of time–the damage to their productivity has been done. You do not have to chase, you can go back to business which is making way towards destroying the base.
-
Here’s a tip on the opposite perspective: “it’s easier to gank someone you know is being too aggressive–especially if they are chasing your weakened teammate.” You should know your enemies will do this too.
-
Know yourself–just because a couple teammates are on a killing streak doesn’t mean you are. You should be more cautious if you’ve been dying. Your teammate’s kills will not wipe away your deaths.
-
Your goal is to destroy the enemy base. That is your goal! Use your character’s strengths towards that. Your kills should be working towards that goal (not against it).**
In any case, I found it to be an interesting case study… And for the record, I had a lot of fun in that match and felt the other team played well (not in combat, but in executing an endgame plan). At least at this level.
Also, brush (aka Tall Grass, aka Stealth Tiles) kick ass! I’m so glad Riot put them in the game. They are excellent tools for juking and ganking and they make some encounters very fun. It’s a fun feeling if 3 heroes are chasing you, you stop in the brush, right when they get to the brush you do a 180 and you see them still chasing after you in the distance. It’s another good feeling to know that someone is in the brush and you footsie them into exposing themselves (and kill them quickly, preferably with a teammate).

yo son all i gotta say is toot it and boot it

Yeeeep it took me a lot longer to learn to not chase so much. Like you said if they’re running you get to push closer to their turrets which is actually the point of the game. And if they run back well they’re that much more handicapped then you can kill them. Win/win situation if you don’t chase. Usually a lose situation when you chase cause even if you gank you typically die afterwards whether it’s a turret or another team member… And then the guy you killed revives BEFORE you so he gains ground on you and effectively you earned nothing. Spacing and footsies.
I personally hate the tall grass, lol. Whenever I run into it and discover an enemy I die in like 3 seconds. I play a lot of squishies though. Not much luck hiding in it either!
This game! I can’t stop can’t stop can’t stop the beat. I’m up til 7am right now. Well I was only up til 5 playing it but yeah still not bad.
DotA.
Mechanica – Yep, spacing and footsies! And good judgments too (on fighting games and LoL/RTS games)! And yeah, this game always has me wanting to play more.
As for the tall grass, I’m learning a few more tricks and tells and estimated guesses regarding the brush:
-
While I used to use S to Stop all actions so I could focus on timing my last hits, now I’m doing the whole squiggling all over thing at various ranges–footsie.
-
I play footsie at a character ranges (depends on which hero I think is in the grass) to see if I can bait the guy to expose himself.
-
The great thing about long patches of grass is that when you use it yourself, it’s hard for the enemy to know which part of the grass you’re in. Are you trying to make an escape? Are you setting up a gank close to him? Are you pretending to escape (because he’s chasing you) and you actually are setting up a gank?
-
If your character has a dash or a quick movement option, there are even more games you can play with the grass. Especially if you know the grass is on the edge of their fog of war.
-
Don’t forget that sometimes, running into the grass and timing your escape to go back the opposite direction can be a great misdirection play.
-
If you want to hearth, and you are sure you weren’t seen, use the grass.
-
There’s also sloppy grass play–sometimes enemies don’t properly shake off minions before your attention is set on them. Meaning, sometimes if you see minions straying from the path for awhile, you should have a good read on where an enemy hero is/was.
-
If you want to do aggressive creeping, going in and out of the grass can help.
-
And of course, never forget that a quick step into the grass is enough for the opponent to detarget you You don’t have to stay in the grass whenever you go in it–it’s a good footsie tool and it’s a good way to force opponents to use more skill shots and reduce their ability to use targetting skills and auto attacks.
Duggish – So your gamertag in LoL is DotA? Sweet! JK!
Thanks to Blazeu25 for posting this in the general board:
Someone checks out the new PC Gamer–details of a new Map and a new Hero in LoL
HoN is Dota pretty much, with a slightly better interface. I say slightly because the biggest turn off for HoN is the small character size compared to everything else and pretty poor interface at least when i tired it in the beta. Aside from that its a solid dota clone where as LoL is a little different and a little refreshing besides I like 25-40 min matches over 50-70 min ones in HoN and dota.
Lol at the elist HoN guys laughing at me because i had a 1500 rating (so i was new) only to find out Sand Wraith is the spectre my best hero in dota and rape them 15-1.
PC Gamer’s website just posted this this morning:
League of Legends? incredible new art style! : PC Gamer
It talks about what will be in the new PC Gamer that hits newsstands next week, but it also shows the new graphics style the game will apply soon in a patch.
That’s dumb. Do they want to get any new players? Then they need to have a demo.
Hopefully they’re working on it.
Graphics preview looks good. Though I have slightly mixed feelings on the barrel.
Posted in the General thread, but had to share it here… This had me rolling in tears. I hope the “Pro” player was banned for this, but I still found it funny.

I’ve been playing this for a while. Already level 30, at least. I’m a pretty weak player personally, but I hang out with some guys who are pretty good, so I kinda know what’s up.
“Sorias” on LoL as well, if you guys want to friend me.
Btw, I want to second everything Chanchai has said, but as long as we’re giving out tips…
One thing that really helped me was having it pointed out that resources really matter per team, even though they’re only tracked per player. If there’s an empty lane… get in there, all those dying creeps are experience that’s just disappearing. Assists should be considered more important than kills… since both killer and assister are earning gold/xp, that’s better than just stacking one player (One of numerous things most players don’t understand… killstealing is actually a benefit to your team because of this, not something to be avoided).
Similarly, an important skill to learn is to not starve your teammates. A big problem with Mordekaiser when he was first added was that he can last hit amazingly well, and earns massive amounts of gold. But he really doesn’t need that much gold to be effective, it’s much better for him to usually back off a bit and let his laning partner collect that stuff.
I tried downloading this the other day and it repeatedly crashed while installing so I gave up and deleted it. Today I got an email from their support saying that their installer was messed up and they fixed it, and because they want me to play they’re going to give me 2500 free points if I log in this week. So i’m reinstalling now. If it works I’ll be under the alias Ghrrk. Add me as a friend and teach me how to blitz!
I was excited to see that Ghrrk the jerk had added me!
Heroes of Newerth!!
We have 15-20 regulars at GC for HoN and will be starting tournaments soon.
^ this guy has the right idea last time i was there ( the only time) i saw like 4 kids playing it granted it was still in beta and the kids were not that great the game OWNS LoL
