Its painfully reassuring to see that even the mighty Momochi has difficulty against Sim. One of my training buddies drives an awesome Dhalsim and getting in is extremely difficult. The problem for Akuma isn’t so much his options to do so, but the fact that getting in on Sim requires you to take a few hits to close the gap with Akuma taking a lot of damage in general. As such, things add up and you have to err on caution. Sim then has you where he wants you - at a distance with him on a life-lead.

Stuff that works against Sim:

  • d+mk from the air busts through various pokes (counterhit damage too)
  • c.mp stuffs many pokes (counter hit)
  • sweep from lk tatsu possible for wake-up pressure
  • EX air ball is a great way to lead an offensive charge
  • Sim’s large hitbox permits maximum damage combos
  • Demon flip grab has its uses on wake-up though be wary as b+mp and EX up-flame can beat it clean
  • You can EX flip grab on reaction to a Yoga fire. I haven’t yet tested dive kick (on immediate reaction) but you can definitely grab.

I use Sim as an alt. and I think he is extremely well tooled in this game to deal with Shotos with Akuma being no exception. Akuma’s best approach against Sim is (obviously) patience in spades, EX air balls and a very mixed up approach to really keep Sim guessing. Once you get in you literally have to throw everything at the little bastard as you may not get another chance.
