WCG Ultimate Gamer season 2 (with Justin Wong + Tekken 6)

Yeah but then you run the risk of someone winning the first game and taking that advantage through the whole gauntlet. Winning straight up in each challenge seems the best way to “prove your skills.”

Someone else mentioned why they didn’t just play the games straight up… well if that was the case the genres would be skewed towards your specialties. This helps handicap the people who specialize in racing as long as they can adapt and for the people who don’t race seeing how well they adapt at all games puts them on more equal footing.

I mean how exciting would it really be if they played SF4 straight up with no gimmicks?

there were advantages in season 1 in the gauntlet and someone different won each time

unfortunately, since it is for TV, it is more about excitement than who is actually the best at video games. I would say justin is most likely the person with the most gaming skill/creds…though most of it is allotted to fighters or other games that aren’t featured on the show (very sure if he used his time for other games he would beast in them too…but when you are as serious in fgames as he is that’s probably not wise).

it’s more like world champion of being at least at a passable level of random genres (mostly new and usually shitty games) and stupid real life challenges/gimmicks.

That’s the problem. They can’t adapt. Justin was clearly the worst at Forza. You add in random gimmicks and it just makes it worst for him. It didn’t help him. As bad as Justin is I don’t’ think he would of got lap in straight up with no random gimmicks.

If you want to make it “equal footing” don’t do gimmicks just give straight handicap. Like if they were to play CS. Then Yaz starts with less money for guns, or SSFIV Justin has to play with 50% life. Fuck gimmicks.

^ Even though that’s an example I don’t agree with it. I couldn’t care less about equal footing. When you auditioned for the show you knew what you were getting yourself in. Should of practice harder… :coffee:

There’s not gonna be much tactics going on when it’s a first-to-ten-kills format. Better that they just play that mode out and see who lasts the longest or gets the most kills period.

Not at all, cuz they’d likely go up against the CPU. And if they played each other, the level of play would probably vary.

i wonder why didn’t justin do better in forza when they were driving with their feet. dont asians have long toes? i’m part flip and everybody in my family has long ass toes and i know a grip of filipino people and they have some long ass toes too. is it not the same for other asians? i use my feet like another pair of hands all the damn time.

I would of had no problem with that challenge. I woulda been straight cruisin, bumping some , and bobbing my head like if it was a sunday drive, shiiiiiiiiit. :smokin:

i’m more surprised Caesar didn’t take Forza considering being tall would give him some leeway on what to do. But what do I know.

i’m all for gimmicks if it’s just to prevent it being random gamers playing random current (sometimes old) games. Someone can stream that shit and turn it into a show if they wanted. I just feel the “gimmick” bit needs some work in both the gaming and physical challenges. (Like the Rock climbing bit and how the females or anyone that wasn’t Caesar and Yaz was at a disadvantage.)

Imagine a handicapped contestant who’s paralyzed from the waist down tried that 2nd part of Forza. They can’t.

Well couldn’t you make the argument that a better all around gamer would be able to adapt? I think this was the best possible way to balance stuff out. You’re a badass in shooters well everyone has to play with one hand instead of giving the guy one bullet. The pros will still be the pros in their respective fields but seeing them struggle a bit is far more exciting than domination.

You can’t hate on Justin too much for sucking at Forza. The guy doesn’t drive. Period. He lost where he should have lost fair and square. There’s no way he would have won even if they played straight up.

lol that was actually the very first thought i had when i saw that game. like really? so… your gonna take a pure 2d game like that, slap on some 3d goggles and call it a day? FORREAL?

Like Shin Oni said “i’m more surprised Caesar didn’t take Forza considering being tall would give him some leeway on what to do” some of the gimmicks give others advantage over one another. Or Monte “i wonder why didn’t justin do better in forza when they were driving with their feet. dont asians have long toes?”

Seems like the gimmicks help out people with longer feet/toes in this particular challenge/gauntlet.

Then he should of lost end of discussion. What if he random out Yaz because of the gimmick? If that did happened Yaz has every right to be piss as hell, because he clearly is better than Justin at Forza.

That’s the whole point EVO is 2/3 and not SBO format. We are trying to get rid of the random factor. Gimmicks is helping it be more random.

gimmicks are dumb and would only help decide who is best handling random stupid gimmicks. it’s a joke to think the better overall gamer would do good with it still.

honestly, the way to better see the best overall gamer would not be TV-worthy. this show definitely does not really show that imo.

it would be points based on all kinds of different games. no dumb gimmicks. no rock climbing. etc. etc.

either way, hoping kat or yaz wins.

They are also helping me stay awake through the boredom. I fell asleep watching this year’s EVO SSF4 finals. Unless they’re going to win by playing with their feet or upside down, it doesn’t count.

To me, this means that for the sake of television, they need to add twists here and there, but for the sake of testing gaming prowess the gimmicks have to be within reason. The gaming rules should still be the same, but the gimmicks can test you in extreme conditions, particularly fatigue (mental and physical). I noticed one of the things they kept showing was the temperature in the rooms, and how much everyone was sweating. Maybe the challenge could’ve been a straight-up gaming session, but this time the temperature was jacked up to 110. And then you could add some of those silly, typical reality TV challenges, like the winner of the first half gets to take a 10 minute break in an A/C room and gets a 20 ounce bottle of cold water to boot. Or they could’ve done a marathon session like I think they did last year, except the winner of the first session gets to eat lunch.

tl;dr version: Gimmicks are fine, just the ones they’ve picked for yesterday’s episode were stupid (minus the Pac-man challenge, which was done well IMO).

naw, 0 gimmicks imo. once you add gimmicks it stops being about simply the best gamer.

though this show clearly doesn’t care and is sort of a joke for determining the champ, but it’s somewhat entertaining, so gimmick away lol.

Yeah, I would prefer no gimmicks, but apparently they want the show to be more than a glorified streaming video.

BTW, I just checked out the WCG site and there’s a picture of Kat on the front page, posted today. I can’t tell if that’s Wong she’s sitting next to. Take those for what they’re worth.

HAHAHAHA, when was this show EVER about being the best gamer?

How bout gaming in a sauna so hot that you get blisters. Or some sorta drinking game where those who puke lose. Or a marathon session of the most annoying game you can think of. Or along the lines of one of Justin’s many fears, gaming perched atop a skyscraper. Or competing for a decent meal, losers are fed gruel. Or gaming while surrounded by an enormous pack of hounds (like this: http://www.doggiestylish.com/store/2010/09/how-to-feed-100-fox-hounds-at-the-same-time/). Or hooking up electrodes on controller buttons to administer electric shocks. As outlandish as these suggestions may sound, they’re probably as good as or better than some of the shit they came up w/this season. May as well add a “Fear Factor” or “Survivor” element into WCG.

never

wait, they had to play a game with their feet?!

“adaption” isn’t really an option, either you have foot dexterity or you don’t.

no they had to play while in a straight jacket and some people chose to play with their feet
