No I see it. How could the OP even think that a game, that was such a huge hit, even be a considered a failer?
I, too, would like to know what that even means.
But that’s not KOF.
At all.
BUT IT HAS MAI! That’s all KOF needs to be KOF!
KOF XII failed for several reasons. COmmercially, they went for an extremely time consuming method (tracing sprites from 3D models) that most people won’t appreciate, and to further fuck it up the made them 480p while their competitors (HDR and Blazblue) used higher resolutions. Bad netcode, missing moves, lack of console features, bosses, characters (compared to KOF, by itself it’s a good number though) etc. But the main problem was their spriting method. That was the cause of all the other issues I mentioned up to this point.
But all that is not relevant for competitive gaming. Competitively, it is a failure because its systems suck. You can add all the extra characters, moves, modes, bosses and shit you want on top of KOF XII and it will still be garbage. It’s not a good base to build upon.
Even if you u use the SNK systems is it that much of a difference? I dabbled in Kof98 and compared to the snk grooves it felt the same. Keyword: dabbled.

No, it’s not the same. You can’t combo command grabs, hops are severely nerfed, rolls work very differently, most characters are butchered of a lot of moves and play nothing like they do in KOF, among many other things.
I can’t recall right now, but I think the normal -> command normal chains don’t work in CvS2 either.
I have the game got it over SF4 now I am waiting on Super SF4 while my KOF sits on my shelf . I am a huge KOF fan and this did fall short of expectations.
I think what Tech meant was despite the sub systems in CvS2 it didn’t change the fact that the game still has a over all Capcom feel, 6 button controls (Jab/Strong/Fierce & Short/Foward/Roundhouse) instead of the standard 4 button KOF style (LP/HP and LK/HK), and a lot of the SNK characters feel heavily simplified (and I use this term loosely) and lacking a lot of options compared to there original KOF counter parts etc…
tl;dr
CvS2 may share the same sub systems but KOF is quite the different beast, play 98 for a little while longer then the differences should become apparent to you…
No you’re right, CvS2 Vice almost makes me wanna cry ugh…
Trade in the game and add the credit to paying off SSFIV.
Pretty much.
CvS2 is essentially a Capcom game with SNK characters (and I use the SNK character part loosely). It may have subsystems saying it draws from KOF, but they really play anything but.
Also, WTF is up with Capcom grooves having roll option in the first fucking place? They never came up with that subsystem (besides ukemi rolls, but that’s not the same). /rant
Disappointment, yes. (There are few things I wish were different.) Failure, no. Reason: Publicity. Good or bad, positive or negative, publicity in any form is always good. It is a gauge to tell the company what needs to changed and what needs to be kept.
its funny how capcom actually buffed rolls from kof to cvs2 (aside from RC, of course)
Gameplay wise I actually enjoy KOF XII quite a bit. It also is a bit easier for people to get into compared to 98, 2k2 or XI. Plus it’s easier to transition someone from Street Fighter to KOF XII then it is to the other ones due to the bigger gap in abilities required to play successfully. KOF XII could be a stepping stone for a SF fan to go onto bigger and better KOFs like 98 or 2k2.
Yeah it was one of the reasons CvS1 was garbage, to be honest.
on cvs 1 every character has different roll travel distance, terry being the shortest and nakoruru has the longest, yes imo capcom just bring snk char to their game playstyle not snk style gameplay.
Good as a arcade game, it just sucks as a port. Although seeing how KOFXII is looking at CF it’s a pretty sad sight. The machine is basically a coat hanger for the BlazBlue dudes XD.
I would call it a failure though, it didn’t translate to well when it reached the consoles. Besides, you don’t bring back a dead person and not have a reason why (Unless it’s a dream match again, which this wasn’t). I still give it love at the arcade at certain times though
Uh, yeah, that’s what they did.
That’s why it was broken (among other things). It has nothing to fucking do with it being Capcom style or SNK style as long as the mechanics are handled properly. You know why in KOF everyone has the same distance roll, its short and far less abusable than in CvS2? Yeah, its that way for a reason. Know why most characters bnb only work off a close C or D into canceled command move instead of repeated shorts and shit? Yeah, its that way for a reason.
Nakoruru? You know she was another reason that game was crap, right? And even the characters with shortest rolls led to the mechanic being entirely abusable. You don’t even need roll cancel in that game; roll ~ throw is such an effective and irritating strat its ridiculous. And CvS2 inherited some of its shit too; because they brought over the stuff that still needed tweaking from CvS1 Pro.
