I guess I think of offensive-turtling as a real thing; like bulldogging someone into a corner with Guile.
Then it’s not really turtling now, is it? Or would it sound better if we call it “Defensive Rushdown”?
Offensive turtling revolves around zoning. Basically putting yourself at little risk or fear of retaliation, but keeping pressure on your opponent. Few characters can be played this style. Defensive turtling is not putting your opponent at any pressure and basing your whole game around them making mistakes. In either case, turtling is the act of not constantly moving forward on your opponent, or advancing when it seems completely safe. I would say the best way for Honda or Zangief to beat a strong zoning game is to offensively turtle. Walk forward and block and slowly edge their way into a situation where it’s hard for a zoner to AA them, or force them to panic.
Straight rushdown is different in which you are pretty much proactively moving in on your opponent attacking, and forcing mistakes out of them and fishing for a counter hit. Or forcing them to defend wrong.
Guile can’t be played rushdown, because there is no way he can make an opponent fear his “walk forward” offense or make them defend wrong. Guile’s pokes scream “midrange, push them back into max range”. He’s not like Cammy who has fast, but low range pokes, but can constantly keep drilling you if she’s at point blank.
@nemesys- I think Branh covered it really well. and defensive rushdown does make a little sense, lol. Some of the Muteki vids I have seen really make me think of a pressuring/bulldogging that is very defensive/safe. He zones people back into their corner.
or, OR, Air Throwing them five times in a row. I swear I did this once because the guy just knew if he could start crossing me up, he’d stand a chance but I lmao when I cought him that many times. Three times it was in a row with jump throw, jump throw, jump throw, and then two more times after that where he tried to stop jumping for a moment… and then jumped again to receive another of Guile’s denied air pass privileges.
I don’t get that much hate mail but the one I did was because I was fighting a Seth. He told me “oh, it must be really hard to hold down back the whole match.” and I just told him, “Seth has all the tools to keep me out for free. I’ll sit here and let you come to me, thank you.”
and lmao @nemesys-
just got kicked out of 3 rooms in a row after using guile. one of the guys were using ryu and would jump back and start throwing fireballs and i just sb/ neutral jump it and forced him to jump into B.HP and round 2 starts off with fireballs again but we both end up with a few pixels of health with him having slight life lead and i throw ex boom mid screen with 1 second left on the screen and he eats it and loses the match but then bam i end up getting kicked out by him. but back onto topic no guile isn’t cheap, players like to say that now since they can’t beat him in fireball throw downs as easily. guile doesn’t have abusable fadc ultra like some of the other cast and he has no answer to crossups and has no kind of crossup game, he’s just a very solid character that gets people frustrated when they can’t get in on him. also i get a whole mess of hate mail from using guile consisting of mostly “stop running like a pussy and fight” or something to that extent. LOL
Well what pisses me off about guile sometimes is his priority on his normals. Becuase I use characters who have lower priority its very frustrating when all he has to do is press a direction and FP and it owns me hard. Also i hate his air grab. I know its legit and im stupid for jumping into it but the hitboxes make it looked bugged to me. I’ll be mid motion with a move and it would touch his body but of course he warps to me and air throws me. That for one i can say takes the least skill out of all of guiles defensive moves only because if you jump and mash grab you will grab someone out of the air no matter what. No timing required. Otherwise guile is the peak of defensive awesomeness and i love playing guiles who can not only turtle but can be on OFFENSE too. Pretty impressive stuff when you meet those guiles.
Unforuntately, anyone who is playing against you with Guile isn’t really playing to impress you. They’re playing to beat you. So I’m not sure why Guile would give up his advantage just so you feel better about your lost, or give you a sense that he’s working for his wins. Juri has decent normals, so if a Guile is at point blank and beating out all of your moves, then apparently you have little to no knowledge of your character’s normal game. I could imagine you love offensive Guile because they’re much easier to beat. That way he’s in your face and you can start fishing for stuff and get a random combo here and there. The best played Guile’s are probably the most annoying, lame, and defensive. The worse are probably the ones running at you trying to get in your face.
Well said. I still remember some guy trying to lecture me about how I played Guile because I was playing keep away with sonic booms vs zangief.
“If you can’t play like (insert whichever tournament player/shower or deodorant hater) you shouldn’t use Guile.”
Sorry bud, not everyone is gonna play how you want them to play. Not everyone worships tournament players, and not every player gives a fuck about a tournament. Suck it up and outplay Guile, or leave the room.
Oh juri is just my avatar, I dont user her as often as you’d think More of a Hakan player myself. Actually I find defensive guiles MUCH easier to beat because the stupid ones online are pattern (obviously not good guiles, im also not high on the PP ladder) who defend the exact same way every time without adapting to my changes, rather they just use 1 single strategy. Baiting a shitty guile is easy. The offensive guiles throw me off because a Guile player who has decent offensive strategies will come at me and I won’t know what to do because no one does it. Its like when I face off against a good Gen player. Wtf do i do? Ive never faced against one
Although I wish I had but im not good enough to get that high up on the ranked ladder.
@Alkipot did someone REALLY say that about your guile playstyle? How ignorant can you get? Looks like he was pissed that you wouldn’t give him free 360s
While Guile offence game is shitty and not recommended usually, its often safe thanks to Sonic boom wall. He may score some High damage, like UDK into Cr.mp combo, GHK into flash kick and the other stuff, but he have few set ups for these combos, highly situational, and extremely risky not punishment wise, but momentum wise. You risk losing a solid and favorable mid screen dominace for mere 300-370 damage that you are not even sure it would even land. Perhaps if you end the blockstring with Sonic boom, you may have a chance to return to mid screen, but then again, you already put yourself at risk when you went close range with your opponent.
Besides, I hate getting knocked down and have to guess which way I must block. I prefer to sit my ass down and laugh at your attempts to close the distance, then throw you away if you come close by various means, to repeat the process of closing the gap times and times again.
In short, you are asking Guile players to sacrifice favor able momentum for mere pleasure.
Yeah, dude gave a long ass lecture over his mic about it. Entertaining conversation just to hear the guy’s logic. Kept saying my way of playing wasn’t fun… I dunno, but on Guile is VERY fun to me; I’m just another average online only player that understands a few of the game’s mechanics and tries to make things work in my favor. While trying to learn from the losses and adding whatever knowledge I can remember to use in a match of course.
I hate Blanka’s playstyle, and I get sick of shotos but I’m not gonna tell a Blanka/Ryu/Ken player how I think he/she should play them.
With his new buffs people (including me) hate playing against Guile because it seems like there isn’t the same technical-skill-to-ass-kickery ratio that other characters have. In short, it feels like Guile players have a lot less to actually do to be decent at playing him effectively.
Just an opinion.
I play somewhat of a hybrid of turtle and rush down. Knee bazookas allow me to move forward behind a back charge. This allows me to pull of some basic combos off of LP SB. I love it when people stupidly focus walk through a boom, because they will be eating a backfist or U2 for free. After some exchanges usually I’ll be in the life lead and pretty much your offense is now negated because I can now predict what you are going to do. The only characters I have trouble doing this to is Dhalsim, Ibuki, Cody, Gen, sometimes Rufus, and Dee Jay.
No problem with with Blanka? Since all char u mention were like cross-up happy chars.
Sim has a crossup?
Yes. You have to block his instant jump teleport into hp by blocking crossup. Hahaha…
Oh, I guess that counts. Never really thought of it as a crossup, but now that I think about it, it is one.
Sim’s cross up is like Guile being an offensive turtle. Do what now? Both are effective but “unconventional” in a sense.
@ Alkipot
Doesn’t that one guy know that Gief’s whole play style is based on getting in close? Why the fffffff would Guile want to let him DO that? As in, LET him do that?!? The only time I get in on Gief is if he’s dumb enough to lariat past my boom at 3/4’s of a screen away and gives me an open invitation to jump in on him with my steel toed boots.
