Greetings, I’m interested in hosting a local tournament but don’t know what it takes to be successful. This will be an investment for personal interest but also business opportunity as well. Depending on success will determine if I can hold other events and expand.

I’m not starting out with much but I do have supplier of game console’s, games, and venue of my own to use. I’m still working how to mesh it all together so I like some advice. I have some experience as I volunteer for other similar events but this will be my first time hosting it.

You should get a lot of people in one place and get them to play video games. Maybe a specific fighting game.

And maybe you can make them fight in some sort of specific order (I hear this is a crucial part, not sure though). Perhaps some sort of “bracket”.

Probably tossing out shit you already know since you already know but every little helps I guess.

I guess a basic thing would be to make sure the rules/games/ect. are posted up in advance of the tournament, it sounds like an obvious thing but strangely enough some people do seem to forget.

Make sure you know what’s going on with power supplies ect. no-one wants a powercut mid tournament because someone opened a fire exit.

Make sure people know it’s happening, perhaps contacting a few anime societies might get a few more entrants since they tend to have people who are into fighting games but not neccessarily involved enough with the scene to see it advetised on SRK/Dustloop/Wherever.

  1. Get a venue.

  2. Set a date

  3. Announce Games/Console/Arcade/Whatever

  4. Post rules, ask for setups

  5. Promote via SRK and Facebook/Whateverthefuck

  6. Hope people show up…

You’ll have better luck in non GD sections.
