I started using 'Rog yesterday. I’ve always known that his wake-up game is bad, and I tend to get crossed up and pestered when I mis-time an AA or whatever. What kind of options do I have when the headbutt won’t work? I know I can focus, but what about opponents who O/S something like sweep? I have seen Ice-Age do EX Upper to escape: how is he doing that when he’s being attacked in the opposite direction?

Thanks.

your best option is to block, unless it’s a special jump-in on wakeup, you won’t be taking any chip damage (although you’ll be in block stun). You can focus backdash, or backdash. Few characters can actually option-select an FADC backdash, they need to have a jump-in that can be special cancelled (e.g. Viper j.hk xx burning kick). But, you can be armor broken and your backdash can be punished as well.

ex.ru works against some meaty jump-ins and cross-ups but it’s a bad idea in general, especially against cross-ups. This can be baited and punished accordingly. You can auto-correct ex.ru, and you just do the same input just as they’re crossing over you. opponents can time it differently so you lose your back-charge and it’s still a safe jump though.

I can give more specific examples if you need them.

Sure, I’ll take anything you can give. The headbutt is useless if they are jumping in deep, and once they cross-over I can’t do anything because cr. hp does not extend that far back. I’ve also had problems with neutral jumps on wake-up. Oh well, its only my first day using him.

@Noriega: To do a non-autocorrect ex RU to escape cross ups on your wakeup, just do the reversal input as early as possible.
Also, ex dash straight is a decent reversal against some wake-up meaties. You can get thrown out of it though.

wake up ex. dash upper if you dont wanna deal with the jump-in mixup. otherwise just block, option select, and dash back

edit: if its a cross up jump-in as you say, meaning opposite direction, you can still ex upper out (even though it won’t hit) to get out of the situation. it shouldn’t be an issue

unless it’s a meaty cross-up, trust me. ex.dashing out of a meaty cross up is setting yourself up for failure, better to block and backdash. Case in point.

you’re right, but thats a different scenario entirely in that video; im talking about, lets say, a standard ryu or ken mk crossup. i dont recommend doing that with a zangief in the corner and expecting him to ultra regardless of whether you dashed or not :stuck_out_tongue:

also why do you dash-straight when they’re jumping in, its more effective to dash-upper

Not 100% on this one, but based on experience it seems that the timing between when you absorb a hit and physically hit your opponent is a bit faster(maybe 3 or 4 frames) with ex dash-straight compared to rush upper. I usually use auto correct EX. dash-straight over Rush-upper but they both have their situational uses.

Oh yea, this is Dumb 4 Crumbs btw Dmetal. GG’s.

To the OP:
I would say practice online doing auto correct EX punches. You’ll start to get a feel for when it’s a good time to use it. It isn’t often, but you’ll get a good idea the more you practice it.

In general, what i’m saying is that when you ex.dash out of a cross-up on wake-up, you relinquish your ability to control your character for however many frames (like jumping). On a non-crossup jump-in, ex.dashing will win 90% of the time if its meaty. When you ex.dash or tap out of a corner, they recover before you and if they’re looking for it, they can punish. I’m a firm believer in continuing a punishable tactic if an opp doesn’t know how to punish or isn’t punishing like they should, but i’m just pointing out that its a tactic most Balrogs have used at least once and it can be baited and punished accordingly.

Agreed with Gief it was a bad idea (panic on my part), but the concept holds equally true for a ryu or Ken j.mk or any cross up for that matter, they can just as easy follow-up with an attack and catch the dash in its recovery given the situation.

hahah whaddup man, we gotta play more. im dedicated to beating you with my gouken
