I’m an SF3 geek, Transformers geek, etc., but I’m mostly gonna list my current fave’ Marvel and DC comics superheroes, and WHY I like them.
Marvel: 1) Dr. Strange:
He EARNED his powers through training. The origin of a character’s powers is philosophically important to me
He didn’t get his powers from an accident, genetic manipulations or other experiments, etc. He might not be the Sorcerer Supreme right now (which may change later), but he has the mental discipline and diligence to do ALMOST ANYTHING. He has been arguably one of the most powerful characters in the existence of comic books, but that’s NOT exactly why I like him. I honestly just like some of his powers (telekinesis, mystic bolt projection, etc.), and I think it’s cool that he supplements his powers by calling on spirits, demons, etc. for various abilities. He also has personal weaknesses, such as occasional arrogance issues, and he himself is aware of that and constantly struggles/fights to improve himself. He’s not perfect, and I wouldn’t be interested in a character who is.
- Iron Man:
He’s a genius and EARNED his powers by developing a special suit that gave him Superman-like powers. He’s not that realistic, but it’s fun to imagine that ANY typical human can have superpowers by wearing a special suit.
DC: 1) Supergirl:
Again–ORIGIN of a character’s powers are important to me…apparently, ONLY important to me! It turns out that ALL MUTANTS in Marvel Comics received their powers from EXPERIMENTS: the Celestials added a latent gene to the first group of humans that ever existed, and that later manifested as the X-Gene. Mutants are NOT the product of evolution.
Supergirl–like Superman–is a Kryptonian (according to the comics, she might be from Argo–the sister planet of Krypton–but the damn storylines keep changing, and now there are the DC Reboot series, so I’m confused! :P).
Supergirl’s/Kara’s powers ARE the result of evolution. I LOVE the idea that a species of ppl gets his/her powers from naturally adapting to his/her surroundings. I also got kinda tired of Superman over the years, and I like seeing a girl with his powers, but with a different personality. I think it’s cool how she looks kinda innocent, but is a badass with a quirky sense of humor, and the comics and cartoons have shown her learn humility, despite her virtually-unlimited power potential. I admit that the shallow side of me also just likes her powers (flight, heat vision, super-strength, etc.), as with Dr. Strange’s powers. Finally, we get to see a character like Superman, but at a younger age (arguably younger, although I think she was cryogenically frozen and is technically older than Supes), so we get to see her develop her powers as she ages (even though Kryptonians/Argonians?!/whatever have much longer lifespans than humans).
I like other characters too, of course, but characters that don’t randomly get their powers are FAR more interesting to me than characters who had a 1-time, life-changing experience that just…happened…too cliched for me!
lol. I don’t like ‘what if?’ scenarios: even though they’re part of life (although, in real life, becoming a police officer/detective/etc. is much more likely than becoming a crimefighter, of course).
Donatello’s my fave’ turtle though; for sure. “WHAT?!?! He’s a brilliant inventor (Turtle Van, Turtle Blimp, etc.) AND he can fight like the rest of his adopted turtle brothers?!?!” I’ve always been envious/jealous of inventor types, cos I’m NO scientist hahaha.
