To me it’s more of an emotional thing. If you re-release every important game of a certain platform on another, you completely devaluate the original system. SEGA did the same thing with Dreamcast. Almost every big release for that system is available on another console. There’s really no reason to have or play on a Dreamcast anymore. Unless you want to play really obscure stuff like Berserk, D2 or L.O.L.
WiiU isn’t quite as bad yet but I feel like that’s only because of some of its unique features. You can’t, for example, simply port Mario Maker to Switch because it’d be a pain to use without a touchscreen.
I meant ‘bad’ as in ‘not quite as pronounced’ but I find it sad if a console just loses any reason to exist.
Of course in the long run preservation is better for the actual games and I’d definitely love to see Skies of Arcadia & more on modern systems. Or any decent PSP game for that matter.
I guess I’m in the minority that I’d prefer devs spend their time on making new games and new IP’s instead of releasing the same game I have already played decades ago. Although I did just buy Crash Trilogy lol, although I did wait for it to be half price and I got it on Switch for portability and being able to play it while traveling.
I guess that explains this lame ass trend of releasing old games on current platforms though. For the companies making them though, it’s a no brainer because the cost to make them is so much less than new IP’s yet people double dip so it would almost be stupid for them not to do it.
In the Dreamcast case, I’ll still argue that the DC is still the best to play it’s games. Emulation on SEGA software will always be an issue unless it’s done by M2, for the most part. REZ is the only game to be ported that had enhancements. JSR and the Space Channel 5 games are the other games that came to other systems unscathed, for the most part. The licensed music ‘issus’ can have a work around on PC but nowhere else. Crazy Taxi is hard locked at 30fps on PC and had some bugs that weren’t in the original when it went to other systems. Sonic Adventure from the DC collection last-gen had it’s controls messed up. Shenmue Collection is having issues with its emulation (I think that’s more due to the time cantraints D3t had to work with), and there are still divisions about the bloom effect of the Xbox port of Shenmue 2. Skies of Arcadia had messed up music.
SEGA’s teams took a morale hit at the time, so I’m guessing a lot of it was done on lack of caring and time constraints.
That said, I wouldn’t mind having my DC collection being available on modern platforms, preferably the Switch. It’s somewhat started with Ikaruga, Gun Bird 2, and Zero Gunner 2, but those are third party. I’d love to have JSR, both Crazy Taxis (even 3, actually), Skies of Arcadia, Tokyo Extreme Racer(both), Bangai-O, Seaman and Maken X for starters.
With XCX it’s funny because of the hand waiving when this game originally dropped. I think it’ll drop at some point but it’ll be a couple years.
What in the actual fuck man? I don’t really care about file sizes on PC and that would give me pause on PC. On consoles…damn man. I hope those 500GB people have upgraded.
They’d also have to completely rework all of the menus and type interface and whatnot, because that O.G. font was damned near unbearable on anything less than a 40" screen.
On the Switch?
Lol, no.
Maybe if Ninty was looking to sell a magnifying glass accessory.
So glad that I bought a 2TB hard drive for my PS4.
Though…still between install and the day 1 patch, and the middle of NO-WHERE TEXAS internet connection; I wont be able to play the game for at least half a day.
Not sure why CoD and Red Dead don’t come with an install disc as well. 50GB disc+50GB download is fucking ridiculous.
In the case of CoD and Red Dead I’m 99% sure you need the day 1 patch, especially in the case of CoD which is basically an online-only game when you factor in the complete absence of an SP campaign. This is a Switch physical release situation where literally half the game isn’t on the disc, in this case because of insane file sizes.
I highly doubt that is the case. You are forgetting that there are millions of people who don’t even have broadband or put their consoles online. They aren’t going to leave those people in the dark and sell them 1/2 a game for $60 that they can’t even play. Plus I’m sure you aren’t going to get half way through a 60+ hour game the first night you play the game.
it bugs me so many people in usa are still on dial up. shit is uncivilized. not blaming them, blaming Congress for not moving their ass about updating the wiring across the country like how japan and germany governments did.
