I started Star Ocean 1(psp remake) last night and been enjoying it alot so far. I been craving a solid 2D sprite jrpg that got that old school anime feel to it lol and it’s doing it’s job so far of satisfying that need.
But I wanted to raise a question, on forums and etc I always see people say Square hasn’t been good since late 90s/since FFX/post FFX. Is there a reason for why some people really got strong distaste or lack of interest in the company since that time span? I know recently people are mad about FF13 trilogy and reception about XV so far is mixed, but say before FF13 what was Square doing wrong to make people start thinking the company has fallen off? Legit curious
Total Biscuit the most objective and fair game critic that exists today put out his top 10 games of 2015 and is so far the only critic to put TF: Devastation on his list Po you can shut up now.
Square was still making good games in the 2000s. FFX-2, FFXI, Kingdom Hearts (1 and Birth By Sleep), Star Ocean 3 (minus the story), The World Ends With You. In the 2010s, Square has been killing it on the handheld format with stuff like Bravely Default, FF Type 0, and Theatrhythm.
Times have changed, and so have peoples’ tastes and prevent. The demand just isn’t there for classic J-RPGs anymore. Square Enix is pretty much the forerunner of the genre but they haven’t really innovated much with their flagship series. Even FFXV is more or less a larger FF Crisis Core, which was also FFVII with a slightly augmented Kingdom Hearts system. The only developer trying to break the classic J-RPG mold and really do something different with the gameplay is Monolith Soft (they used to be the Square Enix division that developed Xenogears) and with storytelling, Cavia (Cavia is actually dead and gone now, but they were the devs behind NieR).
Culture has also changed over the years. With the increasing… uh… weeaboofication of Japanese… anything, and the popularity of the Visual Kei look, the men in FF now look even prettier than the women, and the anime-ish tropes (teens not even finished with puberty saving the world, angsty/edgy personality, etc) are just not interesting or compelling to most people that aren’t Japanophiles or actual Japanese who have been raised in that culture. That shit isn’t appealing to many people these days.
They’ve been making good games, but you have to look for them out of the main numbered FF games.
Picked up Type-0 HD, Shadow Warrior(was going to buy it digitally but I needed a physical copy because I hate digital) my THIRD copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order(I now own it on PS3, PS4, and digitally on PS4. I also own The Old Blood two times over too) and MGSV: Ground Zeroes.
I popped into my local pawn shop and got Metro Redux for a lot cheaper than what it was going for at EB(they also were all out at both EB games I checked.) I looked up above the PS4 section towards the PS2 section and shit my pants when I saw Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and the Collector’s Edition of Scarface for PS2. I bought both for a whopping $5 each.
Pretty hype. Still couldn’t find Saints Row IV+Gat out of Hell, but maybe I’ll head out tomorrow too to see what I can find. I also just got Hotline Miami 2(dat 3-way cross-buy) and DMC4: SE. Needed an excuse to use this 20% off coupon code that came with my PS4.
Yeah this makes sense, I personally dont care for Square that much anymore, not for the “they used to be good!” reason just they were the company I went to obviously for FF and KH. FF13 left a really bad taste in my mouth and idk how XV will be. It doesn’t look bad but im approaching with caution. But yeah you are right about the culture shift in games and it’s hard to strike a mine with using typical JRPG stuff. Even from people who dont like JRPGs I only see KH praised because it has Disney properties so its familiar and because its more of an actiony rpg. But idk i still fuck with the classic JRPG stuff which is why i went to start Star Ocean, but at the same time that stuff can be a little dragged out and I’d use Tales series a prime example of being the most anime-tropey.
And I guess people use FF as the determination of the companies overall quality since that’s their flagship series. Like Square has Western IPs like TR and alla but that but when I think of TR, Hitman, and etc I still dont really think Square, I view them as an rpg company mostly. But yeah I dont think the company has fallen, just in terms of future FF stuff interest in on caution mode. But my overall lack of interest in Square as a company mostly has come from me preferring Atlus titles these past few years. But I still plan to play Bravely and will be buying the DQ 7 remake next year so it’s all good.
But yeah the Square fell off shit has never been backed up when i see people post about it, that’s why i brought the question here. Everyone says it but never explains why they feel that way lol
Aww damn dont let him put you off, if it helps his chapter is shared with Haruka so you can speed through her and his part if you’d like. I’m not done with the game yet so idk if you’d be forced to use him again after his chapter. But I’m at his part and you can speed through it granted you not grinding or side questing
Does have he have new moves to his arsenal? Gonna dread playing as some nigga who skips upper-body day. Even pretty boy Tanimura could pacc a punch. :karate:
Game’s the last great PS3 game that isn’t cross-gen. I can’t think of anything other than SO5 that’s releasing on PS3 as a “new” game. Just like how Yakuza 2 was one of the last great PS2 games, PS3 is being sent-off with a bang with Y5.
Are you saying you’d rather play as Haruka over Akiyama?
Yeah? I just found out FFX doesn’t have its original soundtrack in the PS3 re-release. I have the game sealed on my shelf.
Now I need to buy the RE-RE-RERELEASE on PS4 if I want the option to switch to the original soundtrack to round out the nostalgic feels whenever I go back to that game. Main reason I got it in the first place was because we got the International content. The remixed music is ehhh
In terms of basic combat he’s still all kicks, I haven’t upgraded him enough to see how he fully plays once you get him some moves. But I like his fighting style, but i do understand what you mean about his style not being that brute type shit like Kazuma or Saejima. But yeah man, dont let him make you skip a great game lol. You know you control the pace of Yakuza games so you can just speed through his part
Didn’t even realize that. I generally don’t pay attention to OST’s unless something in it really grabs my attention Another World, Jenova, Fight with the Four Fiends, songs like that.
I hate the international content. I liked Final Fantasy X (10) better when you find Tidus never actually existed and he fades from reality and to never return.
To bring Tidus back in a new ending
1, cheapens the whole experience of Yuna losing Tidus.
2, I glad to see that fucker go. Out of all the Final Fantasy characters out of all the Final Fantasy Games, including the spin offs and off shoots I hate Tidus the most.
