Video Game General 3.0 - You know what should come back? Pre-rendered backgrounds!

Did Galak-Z get an art change during it’s development? I feel like I saw a VERY similar game that use to have pixel-style character art and was much more “anime” looking instead of looking like it’s “trying to be anime”

It’s general art style hasn’t changed at all.

So whats up dude you seem down on the game lately? Or am I just reading you wrong?

I’m definitely not excited about it, I haven’t played it though. It just doesn’t look like my kind of game AT ALL.

But I thought it was something else, because I am almost sure that there was some other game that was similar but pixel art and far more “cool” than “goofy(/campy?)” in it’s visual style

Well it is a Rogue Like, I’ve come to learn you don’t like them (I’m not much a fan either, I’m pretty picky about them). I really like the campy atmosphere and mood, helps offset the serious nature of the game I.E. death is a huge deal. I also like it’s bite sized chunks format, that’s a lot of the reason I was so hype for it on Vita, it was the perfect title for on the go play. Sad it was canceled. I don’[t think the game is trying to be Anime, but more that it’s trying to be Americanized Anime from the 70’s and 80’s where they took Japanese shows and cut em up and rewrote em shit, usually made them goofier, that kind of stuff.

I have no clue what other game you are thinking of…nothing is crossing my mind that matches the description you’re giving. Sorry bout that.

Well, my biggest issue with it actually is that I’ve always hated ship-based shooters that have that free-roaming type of flight. It just doesn’t look cool at all. I mean I get that in probably actually makes more sense than like X-wings or whatever since in space you don’t have to worry about aerodynamics, meaning you can have thrusters or whatever in any direction, so strafing or flying backwards shouldn’t actually be strange, it’s just not at all aesthetically pleasing, and heck, even the design of the ship doesn’t make much sense for that. It LOOKS like a normal forward flying ship, but it acts just like every other western or western influenced ship shooter with omni-directional flight.

That just makes it even more disappointing to me. That’s basically what I think about everything I see about it, it appropriates things in it’s own way that I would want to see done differently and then it just annoys me that they did it that way. Like at least with that one game, Dark Planet or something I think it was called, you’re in a UFO ship, so it’s like even from first viewing you know this game is not trying to be cool looking and think about those kinds of things, it’s probably more about exploration and more focused on free movement.

I don’t even like twin stick shooters like Geometry Wars and Super Stardust, just play those games annoys me. Then I play something fucking awesome like Jamestown or Astebreed or fucking EINHANDER and I’m just like FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU YESSSSSSSSSSS!!! THIS IS WHAT I NEED.

But again, I’m not saying it’s bad, I just personally get annoyed even looking at it. I keep trying to read and watch more about it to change my mind, but it just gets worse every time I find out something else about it.

This, Stardust Vanguards. I thought it was this. Also, I’m not saying I was super excited for that game either, but the art at least had me somewhat interested, and IS more on the “cool” side.

That’s…weird. JamesTown and Astebreed and Einhander are great games…but they are auto scrolling, like…that’s generic shmup 101 (Not that those games are generic). They do new great things (especially Einhander) but still built on a generic shmup core, auto scrolling…I actually think Galak-Z looks really interesting specifically because it’s free exploration that really takes advantage of those aspects, there’s enemies with multiple behavior types, they interact with each other instead of everyone being out to kill you and only you, You can use the environment to your advantage to hide from enemies (I can’t think of another shmup with stealth in it) or to attack your enemies like with the lava puddles and spike plants and pollen balls. You can grab and throw debris at your enemies. What other shmup has that? I get not liking twin stick shooters (I do, but they are hit or miss like regular smhups) but this isn’t one, it’s all single stick and movement is based purely on use of the thrusters. Also you just said it was goofy and weird instead of cool, but are now complaining the ship looks cool instead of practical…I don’t get it. The shape makes perfectly fine sense it doesn’t need to be arrow dynamic it’s in a vacuum, if anything it looks like the Battle Star Galactica fighter ships which could also fly in any needed direction through the use of boosters and 180 flips an spins an shit.,

I dunno man, seems to me like you’re being extremely picky. I get the vibe that you’re annoyed someone that’s not Japanese is doing something ANime and that annoyes you for some reason. Just the vibe I get. Not that there is anything wrong with that, being picky is fine, if it doesn’t grab you then it doesn’t grab and that’s cool, can’t like everything, I’m just not understanding where you’re coming from I guess…which there is also nothing wrong with.

If you manage to think of the other game that was on your mind let me know, I’m always down for more Shmuppage.

Decided Im gonna restart Dragon Quest 8…i know what Im supposed to do. But it feels weird jumping back in after all these years, so i wanna re experience. I may regret it, but fuck it

When I said, “it appropriates things in it’s own way that I would want to see done differently and then it just annoys me that they did it that way.” I wasn’t talking about doing things differently from everything else. I just meant only what I said, that I would personally prefer seeing it done differently than what Galak-Z did.

Bangai-Oh is pretty similar though definitely without the stealth, smart AI, or debris thing I guess. I did actually like Bangai-Oh but it also presents itself differently with you being in a mech, so it makes sense to be omni-directional. As for the goofy-ness of THAT game, I’m not a huge fan of it either, but it has other aspects that I like enough that I can ignore it.

I only mentioned twinstick shooters as a side tangent to show you how I am just really against experimenting with shmup formulas too much, not because I thought Galak-Z was one.

"Also you just said it was goofy and weird instead of cool, but are now complaining the ship looks cool instead of practical…I don’t get it."
Those are two different complaints. The art and presentation in general is goofy. The music, the character art, the mech design, the enemy design, etc. Granted it’s still inspired by old anime that did take themselves seriously and have a certain level of cool to them, but it’s purposefully not emphasizing that in the art. I just don’t like that personally

For the second, I’m complaining about the idiosyncrasy of designing a ship that moves in all directions in space somewhat aerodynamically. Notice that I didn’t actually bring up the “coolness” or whatever of the ship during the second paragraph, and I ONLY meant to point out that it’s design bothered me because of it’s movement style.

“The shape makes perfectly fine sense it doesn’t need to be arrow dynamic it’s in a vacuum, if anything it looks like the Battle Star Galactica fighter ships which could also fly in any needed direction through the use of boosters and 180 flips an spins an shit.”

That’s my point, it DOESN’T need to be that, but it IS. I’m arguing that with the movement style considered they should make it LESS aerodynamic. This is also why I don’t really have a problem with the mech part of it cause the whole idea with that is that it should be easy to redirect something like that

In fact I’m complaining about idiosyncrasies in general in this game.

"I dunno man, seems to me like you’re being extremely picky."
Yes, I am, because everything that bothers me about the game is in the details, and details are something I very seriously care about.

"I get the vibe that you’re annoyed someone that’s not Japanese is doing something ANime and that annoyes you for some reason. Just the vibe I get. Not that there is anything wrong with that, being picky is fine, if it doesn’t grab you then it doesn’t grab and that’s cool, can’t like everything, I’m just not understanding where you’re coming from I guess…which there is also nothing wrong with."
Kind of, yeah, I am. Thing is, some people figure out how to do it right without looking cheap, like Jamestown which is AMAZING aesthetically in how it blends Japanese influenced art direction with a western bent.

Fuck so basically nothing until Fallout

It’s a good thing I have years worth of 360 games I need to beat as well as XBONE games. Backlog is HUGE, I guess that’s a good thing. I havent even gotten into Elderscrolls online. Too many games brand new on release that I should have paid $20 or less, but I dont like old games unless I heard about it after the fact.

Just beat Saints Row 4. My last save before starting was 12/2013 at 4%. I just beat it today at 73%. I think anyone that was a SR fan from 1 or 2 didn’t like the direction change of 3 then the extreme left field of 4. I basically said fuck that game from the beginning.

But after being like eh I need to beat some of the games I didnt play, and starting it…that game was amazing. I mean dont come into it as “Saints Row” other than some of the characters and you can appreciate the game a million times more. It was waaaay better than SR3, and the humor was actually decent instead of the child humor from SR3.

Also you are so OP by the end of the game that its completely stupid fun. Hell you start the game OP.

And dat Sidescrolling 2D beatem up section doe…

Now to chose another 360 game…I think Fable Anniversary, had it since launch. About to beat him

The dragon gave me my “next-gen moment”.

XCX and Horizon have really given me a sense of awe and scope as well. All three are the games I’m excited to see more of…and naturally on 3 separate systems…ugh…

Wow, that was awesome, it got me pretty hyped actually

Xbox sucks.

Dont you like Wii?

Go kill yourself.

True: Pay walls, sneaky DRM polices, RROD, dodgy customer relations and a equally retarded customers (not all xbox owners) who buy up the gimmicks and lies. And those same retard customers defend Microsoft’s Dodgy practices even when its obvious that the company is dodgy.
To be fair PlayStation has it share of sins to answer for.

No one cares about the Wii any more, not even Nintendo (who dropped all online support).
No one cares about the Wii U ether, only 10 mill units sold.

Note to denizens of General: Remember Preppy’s warrning with WTF flags.

That means you @LordWilliam1234

Pro tip: You can still shut down a post with Disagree flags.

>console wars

edit: Scalebound looks really neat

Or some people just prefer it? Depends on the games you play. I dont play Japanese shit hardly anymore, and what I do play are ALWAYS going to have more players online on XBOX than Sony.

I have dealt with the RROD 7 times, until they came out with the 360 Slim. I USED to multiplat back then, but PS3 was backup for when I got hit with RROD. Which gave me MORE perspective, most games ran better on 360 and online was a huge difference. when you could compare the same game VS the same game.

When all my shit was stolen in 2011, and I had to “reset” there was no reason to get another PS.

If you look at my XBONE games, and condsider I have KI downloaded as well as both Ass Creed games, I’m not missing out on anything by not having PS4, and even then, I’d be missing Forza and KI, and I dont even think DW or DOA5 came out for PS4 either.

I still have to beat all these other than Saints Row 2, SR4, GTA5, Fable 2, KOA, and Skyrim. And by the way XBOX “FAN” WITH NO SHOOTERS.

I feel the WTF reaction is justified for the “go kill yourself” part.

Oooh, yes you are.

Wrong.

What does XB1 have outside of the following:

KI
Scalebound
Forza

I thought WTF was meant to be a neutral reaction for a mind-numbing post?

@FaceMeAndBeBroken
Throw Operation Raccoon City in the trash were it belongs bro.

And alphabetize… Bitches love alphabetized games.
