I’m more interested now

On Destiny:

MMOs have degenerated into complete shit lately, anyhow. So why not make a flashy shooter with a ton of people flashily shooting things? It’s the natural progression of the minimization of the MMO that’s been happening since instancing became big. Basically, there’s no need to actually interact with anyone anymore. This includes NPCs, except for quest and story line NPCs. You run around and solo kill shit until your level is big enough to actually take on the task with someone else beside you. There’s no real need to do any group content until you reach max level though, since the levels are so close together you’ll probably just quickly outgrow the gear anyhow.

Don’t forget about useless features! Gotta have that useless player housing that only you and a few people you invite inside can see as a justification of the game’s crafting system, which serves no purpose than to seed the item drop PRNG and the creation of one craft-specific end game item per expansion. Want the 2nd best mace in the game? Well, you better be a max level blacksmith with access to the required raid-only component. Otherwise, there’s no reason to ever touch this skill because all the other shitty things you can make will be out-shadowed by dropped gear. Oh, when you finally loot the best mace in the game a week later, can just put the old crafted one you spent so much time and gold on on display to absolutely no one inside your house.

And as for those raids you’ll be going on, you’ll do them in a cycle after you’re done doing your prescribed daily quests in the only zone on the server anyone ever goes to anymore. You’ll be locked out from doing them more than once a week so make sure you show up when your guild does the run! It’s just like the old days, but instead of rare spawns actually being rare and having rare loot, we just make it all 100% accessible to you so you can feel good about yourself as opposed to being a failure who can’t get a good PRNG roll and get the item he really wanted. Then we lock it away for a week so you can’t help other people progress. You can’t even solo farm the trash MOBs because we lock out the entire zone. It’s instancing!

And don’t forget your mount! You’re going to want to farm a meaningless faction that you’ll probably never interact with aside from raising it in order to obtain the rare mount that goes .05% faster than the non-raid mount. Go kill those zone-themed NPC monsters! It’s not like the game world is supposed to live and actually mean something aside from your rampaging pillaging of it or anything. All those NPS are just there to cheerlead you onward to bigger loot. I hope you didn’t think that raising faction with them would yield access to exclusive zones, specialized crafting or anything, because those are just old MMO ideas that pissed off the player base because they had to swap between two opposing factions, so we got rid of it!

Now that you’re fully decked out in the most awesome gear in the game, let’s force you to take it off and start working on an entire other suit of it! This time, for PVP! Yeah, since new players whine so much about having to see the words “you lost” on their screen we decided to separate gear into two types so that your hard-earned raid gear is completely useless against player n00b-slaya1997 in his tier-5 PVP gear (that’s what we call this shit since it doesn’t actually drop from a specific dungeon or have any type of aesthetic theme to it or anything). And it’s easy and fun to obtain! Just repeatedly impale yourself on the swords of all the other players participating in our highly-controlled and unimaginative PvP arenas where there’s as little possibility for any of that pesky creativity or use of tactics at all until you finally gain enough “something-something points” to afford the piece of gear of your choice. Repeat until all your slots are filled, and then repeat the entire process again five or six more times until you’ve obtained all the meaningless tiers of gear. Sounds fun, right?

And speaking of turning in points, why not just do that for all of your raid loot as well? I mean, it’s not fair to have some player actually have to take charge of the the loot privileges in your raid, and god forbid that you have to be some player-instituted point system in order to distribute it, so instead of encouraging player interaction, we just distribute points to whoever is in the group at the time the raid boss dies and voila! Instant gratification! Turn those points in to the nameless NPCs next to the equally nameless PvP gear NPCs and you’ll receive your raid loot. How nice of them!

Okay, I digressed enough and still only covered about half of the problems I have with modern MMOs. All that said, I haven’t played Destiny yet, but I think I know enough. As soon as the PC version is out I’ll know enough to form a decision and I hope that I’m wrong. In my opinion condensing the game down to a very basic form is actually refreshing compared to how overly-complicated MMOs have gotten recently, so I’m actually pretty excited about it. I just hope that it can bring something new to this genre that, much like many of its players, is in serious need of some fresh air.

Can you tell that this genre is really important to me?

my 1 and a half year old son watched this video and smirked. little does he know he has to wait until he has kids before he can play it, poor kid

^that teleporting ability is the most interesting thing about that trailer.

These people don’t care, and the hate for Kotaku is beyond reasoning with. Just stop posting Kotaku links while you are still ahead.

This just happens to the the closest to reliant image I got from Google Image search for “stop while you are still a head”

Stop linking to Kotaku, please. If people are clicking on Kotaku links, turn on the thing that blocks ads before clicking.

Use achieve if you want to link to kotaku so badly. No one here is willing to give them hits.

but then it loses all its punch.

you are well aware that people here don’t give kotaku any clicks and that people intentionally refuse to , yet you keep insisting with all these links of yours.

I shouldn’t act suprised tho. you are the guy who said : “i dont see what kotaku does wrong”.

dumbass lol

You guys are seriously still irked that someone’s linking to Kotaku? For one thing, at least the URL is clearly visible, so you know to scroll past it. And if it still bothers you that much, put subt-L on your ignore list. ki shima has every damn right to keep posting about VR (and maybe some other members even appreciate them), as I have every right to choose not read any of them.

@Manx‌

You do realize that Destiny is not an MMO, yes?

The only similarities, afaik, are a game world in which you share the space with other players, loot, basic crafting, and instanced areas.

Also, you should have played FFXI back in the day (Golden era was 2006-2008ish). It’s what dreams are made of to old school MMOers. Played that game for 11 years, but I caved and finally moved on to the new age last year when FFXIV dropped. From what I hear, to appeal more to the post-WoW era, they’ve been adding a lot of theme park/WoW-like elements, which is a shame. It’s still mostly Everquest/open world-style, but if you were to play now you can definitely see the new-school influences slowly trying to taking over. Old-school XI was the last of the Everquest-era games. Most likely the last we’ll ever see of it’s kind.

Niggas who had to make that first trip from their home nation to the central hub nation of Jeuno knew that the struggle was fucking real.

okay, okay… i think after talking to chris cegila that i can see why people dislike it and why i don’t mind.

me:
i often celebrate the successes. i can have opinions on whether or not i think something is good, but i can appreciate when a strategy is solid and when something is successful
that shouldn’t surprise anyone. i’m pretty blahzay about the kotaku content itself, but i still visit it for more of a comprehensive overview without worrying to much if i agree with their statements.

him:
yeah, but you’re smart
you like have a brain
The greatest line in movies to me that has rang true in so many different situations
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkCwFkOZoOY
a person is smart, people are dumb

i forget how working in industry and being conscious of web content allows me to filter out garbage and not succumb to click baiting. so when i see an article that i think is retarded, i can pass it up or even read through it and be whatever about it. if the article is stupid and they at least got me to click on it and give them $.0001 for it, then it doens’t matter to me. I’m far more objective and i can appreciate kotaku and the gawker sites for toeing the line between blogging and journalism to success. as someone with an internal filter, i often enjoy things that go against my opinion grain, and if i think its outrageous, i can enjoy spin for what it is.

but there are people out there that believe anything. i mean… you have drwill complaining that a photoshopped patricia hernandez article from reddit was reason for not visiting kotaku…

and iduno and darksakul agreed with him? asjkdgahskghakjadhkjhsdajkfhjklhdkajs

i think i understand better why you guys dislike it. but i’ve lived on the internet for a long long time. i can respect kotaku and not take them seriously at the same time. a lot of people take their internet super-seriously. so yeah, i’ll curb it a bit.

Fixed.

Whats with FFXI That has everyone saying they actually lost time in life on it? What was so god about it?

Remember what I said about DLC and ‘Complete Editions’?
