DeathSmiles 2X
that game isn’t that big though. Along with nowhere being as good as the original.
Preach it, brother.
Bump!
C81 is coming. Is there any news from Sugeno?

He hasn’t updated his blog since August, i’m starting to get worried about the situation of VP.
Indie devs and artists tend to fall off the earth with real life from time to time, if it gets to Spring though, we should really worry.

This was the last I heard about anything VP related.
I finally started to play this game again after a long time… It’s loaded onto a PC (although I think someone could get this software to work on a first-generation XBox if they were canny about it… Practically everything else before 32-bit era consoles can run on that system!) and I’m playing with a joystick.
Problem: I don’t speak/read Japanese so I wasted hours trying to get the stupid stick to work (I REFUSE to play fighting games with a keyboard! They are made for ARCADE/FIGHTING STICKS, PERIOD. An occasional pad like the Japanese Sega Saturn pad is fine but otherwise arcade sticks all the way!) The pushbuttons work, yeah, but not the directional part of the controller!
All that time wasted and what do I find out? You have to “Check” the stupid “Box” by “Joystick” under the Game Options on the Vanguard Princess screen! (Go to “Options”, scroll down to “Game”, release and then check “Joystick.”)
All in Japanese except for the “Joystick” box. D’oh!
All this business about Xpadder and JoyToKey doesn’t apply in my situation. I’ve got a modded DC Agetec running off of an MC Cthulu board and the PC’s recognizing that joystick like it’s the computer’s first-born son! Seriously, no big configuration issues other than downloading a language pack and changing the PC regionality to Japanese to play this game. I could use the in-game Options for Joystick to set up a customized layout for the game.
But the darn digital joystick only gets turned on IF you check that stupid box under Game Options!
The pushbuttons, on the other hand, work fine whether you use in-game button assignment or XPadder.
(Tried to use JoyToKey but the instructions on that program are confusing and frankly I don’t think it’s very user-friendly at all…)
The game itself is among the most beautiful pieces of freeware I’ve had the pleasure of watching in motion. It’s actually nice to be a spectator and watch this game be played! It certainly is a nice piece of hand-drawn, sprite art and to me is much more interesting than most poly-fighters. I prefer stylized art and even though Capcom’s made great strides getting stylization and poly’s to work better together I still prefer old-style 2-D art. Looks even better in hi-res.
I would say V.P. plays like a cross between Melty Blood Actress and Guilty Gear X. Probably a bit easier to pick up with enough depth there to keep veterans coming back but definitely not discouraging to new players.
I’m not surprised it’s been picked up for XBL (Windows development = easy port) but am a bit disappointed in the lack of a PSN port. A PSN port would at least double the audience for the game in Asia. I don’t think anybody in charge of release believes VP Prime will be big because of the existing original freeware game. It’ll probably be marginally profitable if break even at all.
I don’t think one way or the other that the game will be big in the US aside from the current PC userbase. The mentality of gamers in the US is negative towards “moe-ish” anime and fighters. It’s just “too girly” for most fighting game fans.
Their loss!
Only other problem I’ve had… I can’t get ver 1.08 to run on my system. It boots up for a a second but crashes. I don’t think it’s a hardware issue since Vanguard Princess has such low system demands but I am wondering if there’s an XP issue. (I’m running off an AMD chipset but the game runs silky-smooth so I don’t think it’s a CPU/graphics card issue.) I did update .NET framework to to version 4 for the English patch but even the English patch didn’t work.
Right now, I’m running Ver. 1.02 and it kicks along fine.
The latest ver. 1.08 is hard to find other than the Japanese website… Many other people are having problems running ver. 1.08 on their systems, too.
I wonder if this “Eigo Manga” is still making the XBLA port…
Or you could use the one on the wiki. Also, I hope you’re not using the English patch while still running on JP locale.
Yeah, I saw that link and tried it… Download doesn’t work – and I’ve tried from 3 sources for v1.08. The English patch doesn’t work, period, on my system. The program for the patch doesn’t execute, period.
At least the older version works!
If the old version works, there’s no reason that a new version shouldn’t work. If you get on the IRC channel and I’m around, I can help troubleshoot your problems so you don’t have to put up with a version of the game where Luna has infinite bullets.
I want to play this game. But I don’t want to look at it. It’s a conundrum, I tell you.
Play by sense of smell.
Can somebody write a letter to EigoManga and ask them what the hell they doing with VP now?
Dammit the past few days I keep getting alerts here thinking some news on Prime arrived.
and yep…just added to those alerts. Did the earthquake affect prime’s release that much? This thing was a ok for a summer 2011 release then went to nothing after the earthquake update.
Last we heard was Spring 2012, but that was a while ago.
I’ve just sent them an email regarding this so hopefully they’ll respond to it. I’ve been wondering about this for some time now and to be honest, they have no news regarding anything Vanguard Princess related on their website or anything. I get the feeling that they’ve probably dropped it or such but let me see what they say and I’ll post it up for you all.
This game looks really fucking interesting. How has this game just been chilling under my radar this long?
Definitely going to be rocking some of this at the next local get-together.
Okay guys, as I’ve stated, I’ve sent EigoManga an email regarding the progress with Vanguard Princess and what is going on. I’m happy to announce the answer they’ve given me:
So there you have it. We can continue waiting knowing that there is progress with this game happening even though their rather quiet about it.
