Updated SSF4 Akuma Matchup Thread (2011)

I remember that vid, very informative. Still, I don’t get how the Ultra (10/11 startup) beats the DF Palm… is Boxer’s wakeup that fast? I thought we could safejump his headbutts, which range from 8f startup to 12f…

Yeah dude, its still a great vid.

I’m not too sure on the mechanics of why it works, it just does (for Balrog). Naturally the OS flip palm > U2 I mentioned above eats his super/ultra on wake-up too.

The catch is that its extremely rare for a Balrog to wake-up with either option unless they are a complete moron, or are actually well versed in the Akuma matchup and can read/guess your vortex options well.

Any good frame traps or footsie tips in general against rog? Thats my biggest flaw in this match is that i cant even poke this guy. I’ll either get randomly swept or jabbed out, sometimes even random dash punch or headbutt. The OS flip sweep works well, but its kinda hard to time the sweep late. I think its better to just do it on reaction. Also any other punishes for his dash punches? I’ve started using jab > sweep more against his normal dash punch to punish.

Also has anyone tried palm os srk?

Palm OS Sweep is the most gdlk thing in the Rog MU. In terms of footsies and frame traps, cr. strong 2X seems to net good counter hits and you can sweep him on the counter hit for another untechable knockdown. Use cr. forward OS’d with lk tatsu or SRK or your choice to beat dash straights. Other rush punches I’m not too sure what footsie beats them, but except the dash hook (not the upper) all his rush punches can be focused and put him in crumple.

I notice that the guide says you can grab him out of his ex punches. I’ve tried that in training mode and it seems literally impossible to me for some reason. Unless they specifically mean his overhead which has an uber long startup. I’ve tried it on normal dash straights but its too fast.

Nah all of them can be grabbed. The timing is a little more strict for some. Kara grab also makes it a lot easier.

hmm, so I’m trying to grab his normal dash straight, but i think I’m doing it wrong. Lol i’ll try to grab when his fist is in my face and obviously i get hit. So most likely you have to grab him during his dash if I’m not mistaken.

I think grabbing his rush punches is not very practical. It’s easiest to grab them out of their starting frames.

Hmmm… I use far st.HK vs. Rogs and their Rush Punches a lot. Is a throw a better tactic to use in order to score that knockdown? I mean we all know that with Akuma it’s all about getting than knockdown, but the damage from st.HK is not negligible. Does st.HK trade too often vs. Rush Punches or something? Or is it just easily countered by a skilled Rog?

I tend to use it quite often vs. Rogs because it really messes them up and nets good damage and combo options, but I freely admit it’s likely that the Rogs I face just aren’t very good. If it’s a bad habit to abuse st.HK in this match-up, I’d like to know so I can break it.

You’re supposed to use low foward and either buffer your Ultra or EX srk to beat Rog’s TAP and charge moves.

Just watch out if Balrog’s doing an ex low straight (The one that hits low?) because that can hit your whiff forward.

I just wanna put here my impressions at BBC.

I could speak a lot with tokido. He is a really nice guy, he thinks the hardest matchup for akuma is cammy (in SSFIV). I asked him about some matchups.

Fei: He thinks akuma has advantage even in AE. At first i didn’t understand why…but the true is i didnt understand the matchup. Basically you can’t rush/attack fei, you must zone him, they can’t react to our empty jumps, so he has to guess. It’s like balrog’s matchup. Well if he does ex-cw, we can use c.mk to avoid CW and then we can punish it easily then we will start the vortex’s setups. When we do an empty jump, we have 2 option: air fireball or jump mk so we must improvise our game.

Starnab beat me in solo tournament and then he said me he would do a MM to tokido. Well i watched the MM because i would want to learn the matchup. Starnab was destroyed complety. 6-0 was the result i think. Tokido is a genius those matches were amazings. I hope someone upload it to youtube.
I think akuma-fei is 6-4 in akuma’s favour now.

Bison: He thinks akuma has slightly advantage, he told me he beat all bison’s players from his country. I agree with him. You need to be patient only that.

Rose: I couldn’t watch the matches against luffy. They did a MM and this time was different(luffy beat him at stunfest the last year). As he said on his blog he made a strategy for rose’s matchup and luffy was destroyed by him. 5-0 was the result i think.

My friends told me that tokido used the st.lk to avoid the spiral hmmm i don’t know how to explain it. Rose’s players usually does cr.mp and spiral in block string to chip damage, so he uses the st.lk to whiff spiral and then he punished it. I tested it on training mode and it works, really really interesting.

Cammy: I must apologize with shinakuma. You were right that matchup is not horrible but she and ryu are the hardest matchup for akuma in my opinion. 4,5-5,5.
Tokido used an insteresting mixup. It works on the corner: Forward throw, 2 dash and jump hk, it’s a fake crossup and it works too if you use: forward throw, cr.mk wait a bit and jump hk. Interesting!.

AKuma: He use U1. When i played against him he told me he just uses U2 for rufus’s matchup and cammy’s matchup in AE.

Tokido hates AE LOL xD he thinks SSFIV is better balanced than SSFIV AE. He’s waiting the next update.

ABout players:

Mago: Best player, I can’t describe what i felt when i played against him. He seemed a cyborg, I understand why japanese’s players think he is the best from Japan.

Sako: Really good player, great footsies an amazing rose/cammy.

Dieminion: Great player from U.S.A. I beat him in team tournament but i think that the matchup helped me. He’s better player than me.

All NL Players: YOu are a nice guys:). Mooiboyroy we have to play more :).

Bye and sorry for me english hehe…

Explain this please o.o, it’s really interesting and (for me) i really think rose was one of the worst MU aganist the demon.

Nvm, was doing it wrong. lol

No problem. I don’t understand why some people were so against what I was telling them, even when I told them what they needed to do to make that matchup better.

Anyway, yeah Ryu and Cammy are both tough, and in a way for the same reason. Unlike Akuma, they can both auto pilot their pressure, and even if you know it’s coming it can be tough to deal with. That’s where that .5 disadvantage comes from, Akuma has to always be on point, no mistakes. Ryu and Cammy can just toss it out there and it can still be effective.

In theory Akuma should have no disadvantaged matchups, however because of the difficulty in using the character he ends up with small disadvantages.

Any advice against Ryus that love to use Fireballs as pokes a little outside fs.hk range? I have a lot of success with FA -> sweep during the start of matches, but during the course of the match, that gets either blown up by another FB or blocked.

I’m not sure you’ve got that many options, from that far…

I know it’s risky, but wouldn’t a j.HK get them, if the fireball isn’t properly spaced? That could open up some very nice damage if you land far enough for a st.HK to land.

In my general opinion, far st. RH is a nono against Ryu. Second hit whiffs if he’s crouching and that leads you to getting punished.

This is definitely true. As a former Ryu mainer, I can tell you I would constantly keep my eyes peeled for that once things got close. The moment I saw that first kick get blocked, it was SRK > FADC > Ultra time. Any Ryu who is on-point would punish that hard.

If it helps, I’m very sure that you can punish a Hado from that space with a jump-in HK.

Dudley also. For big damage.

Ugh, I can’t begin to count the amount of times I fell for that crap xD
