Ummm… I don’t know about you but not using your real character in a tourny match is called Throwing a game. So what if your Sagat lost, you should have atleast made an effort. That’s really what “we” the audience want to see that late in the game.
Quan: LOL TV on the line. Yeah the TV would be sweet. Still, he should have atleast made an effort and tried. Maybe, he could have pulled the somewhat impossible and made it happen.
OK let’s settle up on a couple of things. I’m pretty sure there are a few pieces to the puzzle that people aren’t aware of:
For people who don’t know the ins and outs on the business end, Sony doesn’t license out the rights to use PS3 in venues making a profit through gaming. They’ve been a hold out for years and it doesn’t look like its changing any time soon. When POWNZ first started getting into the tournament side of things, I had to convince them to use PS3. We essentially loop holed the issue with players volunteering to bring in their own equipment for tournaments. POWNZ already stick their neck out from the business end running PS3. They’re players, they see things like players and they know that a lot of the players would prefer the PS3. They don’t have to use them by any means, it’s essentially a concession to the competitive community.
When POWNZ was given their contract for the Toshiba sponsorship, it was specifically stated that we were playing on Toshiba televisions and 360’s. The footage was to be recorded and given to Toshiba for winners/losers/grand finals. They could not use a PS3 for that footage. Their hands were tied in that regard.
I know a few people are not big on the “mock finals.” That was a suggestion given by another party so that everyone could get what they want both from the player side and the business side of things. POWNZ was just trying to do what was best for everyone involved. It didn’t pan out, life goes on.
As for the other points brought up. Full disclosure of details within a sponsorship contract is not something a venue has to provide to the players. It’d have been nice to know that the WF/LF/GF had to be played on 360 but it’s hardly any of our business.
99% of us are able to cross between both consoles because we’re all stick players. Don’t be surprised in future if other sponsored tournaments end up being 360 exclusive. A lot of people have used the term “live and learn” and I’ll tell you if I’m running the business, I’m not chancing another situation like this. I have 360’s in my venue, I have contracts with a sponsor, I’m going with 360 and everyone else can suck it up. If you don’t like it, get a 360 or learn how to use a stick.
