Unused Character Sketches

I’d main King Cobra, and I don’t even know what his movelist would look like. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeit.

why the fuck is rufus in this instead of black cobra?

if you ask me I think they should add Dee Jay from Alpha because in reality he would wreck el fuerte players and anybody who would use zangief would after the rolling sobat combo

Apparently there wasn’t a character nerds could identify with…

watched Enter the Dragon with a friend the other night. i ended up describing the alt costumes in sf4, specifically fei long’s costume. i remarked how the street fighter series and fighting games in general really lacked a strong blaxploitation prescence. i know there are already too many shoto’s for many palates but i wouldn’t mind seeing a Black Belt Jones inspired character or if you are tired of shotos, Kareem Abdul Jabbar ala Game of Death. I’m pretty disappointed this character got passed over.

i don’t quite get this. how is balrog/m.bison/boxer a “blackface” character? based off Mike Tyson, granted not the most reputable black icon the world has ever known but 'Rog was created before Tyson went off the deep end. I certainly don’t think of M.Tyson as an uncle tom or a “blackface” inspired character.

I think it’s just that a lot of us want to see a more progressive black character (Think Raven in Tekken 5) in terms of looks, same with how not every caucasian character in SF doesn’t look like Rufus.

Simply put, Variety.

no one has yet to even say this in this thread, thats why is a high demand for another black character. To create variety, but you’d be surprised at how many ppl get angry when you bring up variety.

I know it sure does piss my girlfriend off to no end.

Didn’t notice this earlier, but I just wanted to comment on this and say it’s kinda sad honestly. I think SF3 did a better job with this aspect; sure characters like Hugo and Sean are kind of goofy in some ways but are also badass. You can take them seriously or humorously or both simultaneously. On the other hand, the way Capcom has handled many SF2 characters, like Balrog and Blanka, they are just jokes now…

I also think to some degree characters like Balrog and Zangief are not stereotypical enough. The whole SF2: World Warrior concept is to base character designs on national stereotypes, so that they’re easily understandable and identifiable, and SF4 was attempting to return to SF’s roots with this concept. I don’t know how anyone is supposed to take Balrog seriously as an African American when he runs around speaking with a thick japanese accent so you can’t understand him in most games he’s in, and finally scored a semi-coherent line in SF4 with the dorky anglo-saxon “fight money” BS. The whole point of including animations and voice acting in games is to create mannerisms and characteristics that futher define and build the characters, whereas with characters like Balrog all we get is meaningless spam.

I’m not saying Capcom should be promoting racist stereotypes, nor following them to a T, but if Balrog is supposed to be a black thug boxer, he should act like a black thug boxer, not a japanese anime villain. I’m pretty sure everyone would probably find Balrog a more entertaining character if he actually acted black to some degree or another (not that being black is mutually inclusive to being a thug or a boxer mind you).

hah thats funny

One sketch that I’d love to get a nice screenshot of depicts a possible alternate costume for Gen. Gen’s wearing the same kind of sleeveless outfit as Yun and Yang, and he has his hair down. He looks like some kind of badass elderly metalhead.

I’d just like to add that only the American voice-overs have that “fight money” line. But then again, I don’t understand enough Japanese to listen for what Boxer is saying as he loses. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Although somewhat off topic, I appreciate the direction this thread is going.

I love the character design of that character, he is so Enter The Dragon. Would make vs Fei-Long matches awesome

The whole Black Male + Afro has been explored before in SF. Like in (SF3) Giant Attack’s Secret File Concept art.

lol i dont know why ppl go crazy over that simplistic design “king cobra”. The whole black dude afro thing is boringly old.

co-signed.
I prefer to see more unique designs. We already have Dan, Ken, Ryu, Akuma that have the same outfit design. So another dude wearing the same outfit is just boring and uninspired. No wonder why they scratch that design. :nunchuck:

Stop hatin’, bitches.

EDIT - Also, most of the SF characters are boring, and simplistic. So what’s your point?

You expect Japanese people to understand african-americans? You know that they have probably never had the chance to even meet a black person, much less understand one. All they know about black people is what they see in the tube and that they’re a tappable SF audience.

Simplictic design is the key to memorable characters.

Black Dude with a fro has been done!
