What the hell are you on lol

Nothing. Unlike some preachers of the faith.

SF2 was as big as Call of Dookie, Halo, or Super Mario, bigger than Doom, Zelda, and a bunch of other stuff people put on a pedastool so…

This entire board is called SHORYUKEN, it exists by and for Street Fighter so, really what do you expect.

The way you choose to interpret things is most peculiar given the wealth of knowledge you have at your fingertips…

I will give you that Street Fighter II moved the most arcade cabinets and Super Nintendo cartridges of any fighting game, but beyond that you are pulling at straws.

@NeverYouMind doesn’t look like he was around when SFII hit the arcades (and consoles) and has no idea on the impact that game did to the gaming world while, at the same time, creating an entire new genre, he only likes to do ā€œresearchā€ on wikipedia articles and thinks that makes him some kind of historian of videogames

Like many others here, I was there in the arcades in 1991 to see videogame history happening, I don’t care about what list of gimmicks each game introduced, it means jackshit

But that is ā€œrevisionismā€ for him… what a joke

Even after all this years I spent more time and had more fun playing any other SFII title, including SSFII, than ST

Fuck juggles, supers and throw tech in that game

fighting games would have developed but not the way they have been now. it might have eventually become something in 3D like a mix between Bushido Blade mechanics and Fighters Destiny’s point system. 99% of the fighting games out there today are some type of variation of street fighter 2, even virtual fighter

I was around actually. I was just in the middle of the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics at the time, so arcades in the West and Japan meant fuck all to me. Super Nintendo is a rare commodity in Russia even to this day. The number one fighting game in Russia is and has always been Mortal Kombat.

considering you were around a time of war it’s no surprise that photographic rendered real people with magical and physical powers were important to you and your community. doesn’t change the fact that you are wrong though, and you should be more serious about the fact you are wrong so that you’re not wrong anymore

Not war, collapse of government heirarchy and public services. Provide documented evidence of my misconceptions from reliable sources and I will admit I am wrong. Until then there is nothing except the word of 3 people supporting your narrative.

Dendy (NES clone) did not come to Russia until late 1992 and it was relatively stable by then (outside of government). Russian propaganda and folk tales had existed for generations. Games were just a new consumer good. The content had no meaning except entertainment. I don’t think anyone in Russia knew of Mortal Kombat until the movie was dubbed and aired in 1996.

You guys are still taking his bait? Geez

The SNES version of SF2 World Warrior sold like 4 million, Turbo sold 6 just on the SNES, Genesis version 3 Million (it was released next to MK1 that’s why it didn’t sell as well, plus Genesis wasn’t popular in Japan). PCE version also probably sold a million. So that’s 14 million combined on just the original SF2, not counting Super, not counting the fact it’s the biggest arcade game of all time, lord only knows how many kits and machines it sold but it is recognized as the biggest arcade game of all time. Bigger than Pac-Man, bigger than Daytona USA, bigger than Mortal Kombat, bigger than anything.

No other 16-bit game approaches that. Not Mortal Kombat, not Sonic not Donkey Kong Country, nothing. SF2 to this day is Capcoms best selling game of all time.

SF2 is also one of the biggest licensed properties of the 90s. Cartoons, anime series, anime movie, live action movie, GI Joe figures and a ton of other junk. FFS I once got a SF2 Where’s Waldo book as a joke gift in like 1996 lol.

The Last Guardian is the first failure Team Ico ever had.
And thats coming from a Team Ico Fan.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are master pieces.

The Last Guardian is a joke.

Speaking of Fatal Fury, I don’t think a lot of SNK’s games have aged particularly well outside of some of the Samurai Shodown games. I’ve gone back and played some of the ones I really dug back in the day in the last year or so and they don’t particularly all look or feel great. Art Of Fighting 1 was one of my favorites, and while I still think it’s cool, it definitely is one of the victims of age.

I think Samurai Shodown is the best thing SNK has ever done though. SS5sp is an amazing game. KoF is great, but not as great as SamSho.

Can’t forget about the last blade (both of them) and garou. Kof 98 and 02 unlimited will always be classics too.

I remember several years back playing some SNK at bi-weekly event that one of our mods used to throw at his place. I went to another room where ST was being played and just seeing it in motion, SF was just smoother in motion like I’ve never seen before. It was because of that contrast. SNK’s fighters has the better style but the production values are definitely in Capcom’s favor.

Fatal Fury games aged perfectly well. Real Bout 1 and 2 and FFS are still great games this day.

The first SNK game that really got my attention back then was KOF’95, it was the first game that looked and played as good as a Street Fighter game but with a lot of different stuff that kept me interested.

It’s still one of my favorite FG of all time

ParryAll Fact Check: [details=Spoiler]

  1. Street Fighter II on Super Nintendo sold 6.3m and out of those the majority of 4.1m purchased Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter II’ Special Champion Edition (same as Turbo functionally) on Mega Drive sold 1.65m [1]. No sales figures for PC Engine are available, but the Super Nintendo sales were already admittedly high.

  2. Biggest arcade game of all time is Pac-Man (400k) followed closely by Space Invaders (360k) [2].

  3. According to Capcom, Resident Evil (34.5m) and Mega Man (28m) are bigger than Street Fighter (25m) in lifetime sales [3] and Resident Evil 5 (7.1m) and Resident Evil 6 (6.6m) outsell any one version of Street Fighter II [1]. I would also imagine the 12 different versions of Resident Evil 4 combined would outsell every Street Fighter II version combined as well, but you are welcome to contend it if you can gather all the verified sales figures for all version of both titles.

  4. 16-bit games that outsold Street Fighter II include Super Mario World (20.6m)[4], Sonic The Hedgehog (15m)[5], and Donkey Kong Country (9m)[6].

  5. I’ve seen my share of Double Dragon garbage too and it is considered relatively niche in comparison. Also, thinking back to my childhood (part of which I spent in the States), I remember Mortal Kombat, Spider-Man, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Transformers merchandising everywhere with barely even a shelf’s worth dedicated to the World Warriors.

  6. I never argued that Street Fighter was not popular, simply that it was not revolutionary (i.e. constituting or bringing about a major or fundamental change).
