I kind of like turn based cause it makes you think, its like playing chess. Insted of action rpgs were most of the time you’ll hit the attack button over and over again. Even though I like action rpgs, Terranigma, Threads of fate, parasite eve and so on. Turn based rpgs you have think about which spell to cast on what monster, and cast the right spell on your party. And find ways around certin monsters that ill pzn, sleep, stopspell, or steal your mp.
Unfortunately, in quite a number of RPGs, all you ARE doing is selecting attack over and over again.
Or otherwise just spamming your strongest viable attack, and not necessarily having to deal with all the different predicaments thrown at you (as you said at the end of your post with status effects and the like).
Not really in Dragon quest 2,3,4,5,6,7. You will do more then just hit the attack button; you will have to cast spells otherwise its ggpo.
If you saw my earlier post, you’ll see that I hate DQ, hence I don’t really see that. I’d probably never have the ability to see through all the grinding needed anyway (yes, even the smallest amounts of grinding needed turns me off). I assume later on you’ll need skills, obviously, though I dunno if you need them for everyday battles or no. I’ll just take your word for it.
I do have to say that, quite a few games suffer from this syndrome. FFVIII is a great example. Set the game up properly, and all you’ll be using for the whole game is Limit Breaks. But the game is so easy you can get by with just GFs, or even plain old Attack. Sure, the odd Malboro encounter fucks you up, but besides that, all the other skills you get aren’t needed. Darkside? Gtfo with that shit.
Besides, a number doesn’t mean that I meant all of them. I do have a preference for skill based rather than stats based RPGs.
Go SaGa! Go SMT!
EDIT: What I mean to say is, most RPGs’ best option is basically “ATTACK WITH BEST OPTION AVAILABLE (not necessarily strongest, as that’s normally costly) + HEAL WHEN NECESSARY”
I’d rather have RPGs that force you to deal with situations as they are. SaGa games generally are great at this, as is Vagrant Story. I’d say FFXII too, but I’m too early in that to make a proper judgment call. SMT too, but only Nocturne and DDS (didn’t play enough of earlier ones to judge).
Ya im not really a final fantasy fan, you dont really have to think at all when your playing them.
Oh, how could I forget?
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is almost completely skill based, with the options available to you, and how the fights are set up. AD was a brilliant idea.
My opinions are probably a mix of commonly accepted and unpopular.
-
I like the original Megaman games better than the X series despite the cooler weapons, armors, enemy designs, and graphics of the latter.
-
I prefer playing the Fist of North Star game over any game in the Gulity Gear series. I just don’t like GG.
-
I also love Comix Zone more than other retro gamers are willing to admit.
-
Strider is a horribly developed game, which more than likely attributed to its difficulty.
-
You’re a dumbass if you bought the first Castlevania when it was re-issued on GBA.
-
Beyond Oasis is the best action RPG of its time. Period.
-
Pulseman is great.
-
Shinobi 3 can still hold its own against today’s ninja games.
-
Castlevania: Bloodlines is a very underrated game.
-
Tekken 2 > Tekken 5 (yes)
-
Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown for PSX is still my favorite FPS.
~
And I can see why people prefer Super Castlevania over SOTN. Personally, I like SOTN but SC is pretty damn good from what I played.
Cool idea for a thread. Anyway, I think the Wii is garbage. Gaming is all about skill and it’s turning gaming into a social diversion. You know something’s wrong w/ it when you’ve got a buncha girls playing it.
Primal Rage > Bloodstorm
This is why I need to take over the world so I can kill all you fucking moron gamers that say shit like this.
There is such a thing as dumbass opinions
God forbid people have fun playing videogames.
no god why!! Why most people have fun playing video games!! Why cant people just masterbate to gfx and brain-dead game play.
Mr. X is brain?! No way!!
faggot
NFL street>dat madden
Ghost in the shell: SAC was a very excellent and underrated ps2 game. In which I will expect to buy again today while looking for a lcd monitor.
Amen…so does Smash Bros. in any way, shape, or form.
A2 is more fun than A3, regardless of low rh CC. Majority of cast had things that WORKED, and it felt more like SF than any other Alpha in the series.
2i is more fun than 3s but I guess 3s is more refined…but still dumb.
-Smash Bros. is not a goddamn fighting game.
-The Wii is trash.
-Halo, while not being shit, is far too overrated for its own good.
-Star Ocean 3 was shit.
-Romancing SaGa series > Final Fantasy Series
-Heavenly Sword is not too damned short. No one was bitching when Zone of the Enders 2 was done in 4 hours, or Shadow of the Colossus in 3.
-Marvel vs Capcom 2 is shit
-Gradius 5 is one of the best games ever.
“Smash Bros. is not a goddamn fighting game.”
-“The Wii is trash.”
-“Halo, while not being shit, is far too overrated for its own good.”
-“Marvel vs Capcom 2 is shit”
THANK YOU…thank you, thank you, thank you…
