I lose more to online randoms than to players who actually know what they are doing. I am terrible at controlling the nuts in an online environment. It’s why I don’t play vs randoms at all anymore.

As a general rule, if I’m pubbing or PUGing in a multiplayer team game, I always aim to have at least one other person I know and can trust playing with me. TF2 Medic is awful in PUGs or pubs when none of your pockets protect you or help you build über (though this is why I stick to just one server with decent to good players now). L4D is much more enjoyable when teammates know when to save their first aid or how to crown or kite the tank or how to stick together in maps like The Passing’s final stage. If some scrub tries to pin his mistake on you, you have someone to back you up. And so on.
Deathmatches/arena shooters are a bit different, obviously, but playing against competent players and friends is always more fun.
Of course, playing pubs inevitably leads to frustration except in rare cases, but sometimes that’s all you have or feel like doing.
Speaking of WoW PvP, it’s sad to see AV reduced to a boss Zerg. A far cry from the hours-long struggles in the midfield.
