The changelogs Capcom has been pounding don’t reveal everything that’s changed for a character. There’s some stuff left out like Sentinel’s cr.M getting extra armor for example. So there’s still hope. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Bradygames bible had a complete changelog in it, even for stuff as subtle as frame changes and damage changes.
I’m just thankful MODOK is going into this game with the only nerfs he’s getting are universal ones for the cast. Although most of the Vanilla top tier aside from Phoenix doesn’t look to be going anywhere…
I hear you on the tops still being tops… Wesker only a million now? The guy needs to be bumped down to 850 or something… quick pixie mixup characters aren’t supposed to have a lot of life. They buffed his other moves, he gets speed and damage boost when low on life (auto X-factor?), and no mention of anything done to Wesker’s insane command throw either… He does NOT need that, just give it to Haggar or something, he needs it more! lol Hopefully the nerfs to his gun make up for all of it though… I don’t mind him being good, I just think he’s pretty dumb right now.

Who knows though, maybe the little nerfs they got will actually even it all out, too early to tell… but it seems to me like they’re still all going to be really good anyway. And then you have guys like Doom and Dormammu that got super-buffed when they didn’t really need to be?
As for Dark Phoenix, I still think she’s going to be scary as hell. Yes, it will be harder for her to spam air fireballs, it’s great now that they disappear when you hit her, and the (slightly) less meter building and overall nerf to combos in general will make it harder to get those 5 bars… but once Dark Phoenix rises, I bet everybody is still fucked. She still has the crazy feathers, she still has all her awesome mobility and normals, she still has all the same stuff that lets her obliterate teams by trapping+teleporting as new characters come onscreen, etc. It will just take more work to get to that point IMO, and since most marvel players seem to be path-of-least-resistance type of folk, I guess that’s a good thing

I completely agree with Wesker. He flat-out ignores the “limitations” that pixie characters usually have – low damage output and low health. Wesker breaks both by having ridiculously high health and hitting like a truck. I think the only characters that hit harder than Wesker are Tron, Doom, Haggar, Thor, Sentinel, and Hulk. That’s just fucking disgusting.
But doesn’t Dark Phoenix still suffer the same nerfs that normal Phoenix has? (one action in the air if you do a TK shot, traps/TK shots disappear if she’s hit, nerfed cr.M, etc) If she does, she’ll be a bit more bearable even with X-factor still being as derptastic as it is in Vanilla. I also don’t think the feathers are going to be as good as they were in Vanilla either. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hulk and Sentinel now able to armor through the feathers with s.H and cr.M respectively considering they have multiple hits of super armor in UMvC3. Nemesis also has his “IDGAF” super with hyper armor. Strange’s Spell of Vishanti will also make Dark Phoenix scared to press buttons. People are still going to try and make Phoenix work, but rest of the top tiers are going to be much more of a problem. HOWEVER, it will be interesting to see how they cope with the nerfing of Akuma’s Tatsu, Tron’s Gustaff Fire, and Haggar’s Lariat.
As for Wright’s Maya shield, yes I also agree that’s just dumb that she can block supers. I noticed in a bunch of those matches though that it doesn’t do a good job at defending something that attacks at an angle like Ghost Rider’s j.S. It also doesn’t look like PW can pass through Maya like MODOK can with his barriers. The S barrier especially is great to burn a LoU on for mixups and trapping someone in the corner.
It’s like they decided to give Wesker high health, high damage, one of the best airgrab, a fullscreen instant projectile that leads into full combos on AA, command grab better than anyone else’s (except maybe Felicia), One of the best teleports, and some of the best normals in the game.
Haggar’s command grab should be better. Arthur’s projectiles should be better. Deadpool’s teleport should be better.
Dang, Capcom! If you want to make a “jack of all trades” character, don’t make them better than the specialists at EVERYTHING!
I never paid too much attention to MODOK’s airdash cancel buff, but I’m really starting to get excited to see it in action now. I’ve already got a theory non-corner TAC combo running in my head. The good thing is that I think it would work with a side-exchange too:
TAC>j.H>L cube,L cube, ADF, j.M>flight>M cube, M cube, j.M>ADCF>j.M>M cube, L cube, j.S
Just fyi tac scales just like everything else does now so the big combos into tac big combo before landing won’t work so well

Now that Frank and Rocket have been revealed, who is everyone thinking of teaming with MODOK in ultimate? I thought I was pretty much set on my team for Ultimate, but Rocket Raccon has messed all that up pretty much forcing his way onto my theory fighter teams. Right now i’m looking at MODOK/Nova or Rocket + assist. It seems like there are so many choices for this game, though. UMVC3 looks like it will have a bunch of threats in the cast and I cant wait to see how MODOK fits into the mix…this game has me hooked already.
I’m going to try everyone with MODOK. I do want to play Frank very much now.
Nova/DOK/etc. seems to be my main MODOK team. Good thing about UMVC3 is that there are like 3 other side-teams I actually want to try out now.
Modok/Strange/Firebrand here, though creating a powerup team like PW,Frank, Modok is starting to look like alot of fun lol.
I was thinking that too, but none of them look like very good anchors. PW/MODOK sounds good, FW/MODOK sounds like I’ll make up why it’s good, but all three at once doesn’t sound that great.
I was thinking of possible uses for the J. normal cancel options, if you could combo a regular j.H after a ground bounce what would keep you from air-dash canceling to the ground and regaining your air dash?
Part of me wonders if you could just do an H loop with j.H and cr.H. i.e.:
j.H xx addf cr.H xx jump cancel j.H xx addf and repeat
Since both of those normals are cancellable, you could in theory get good damage and meter off a loop like this before hitstun decay kicks in.
