Oooh, after watching Max’s video I had to respond to this.
Hsien-Ko: My favourite character in the Naruto series is Tenten, a Chinese girl who has a shitload of weapons. I’m not sure why I was drawn to her considering her pathetic amount of screentime, but I loved all of those freaking weapons. So imagine my surprise when the PSP comes out and the first game I get is Darkstalkers. There is a (dead) Chinese girl that has a shitload of weapons! Instant favourite Darkstalker character. I sucked at the game, but I was thrilled to see Hsien-Ko playable in MVC3. She’s the reason I got and kept the game, even if she was really, really bad. I find her fun and comfortable…if only they made her faster. Nonetheless, this is one character I won’t give up on, no matter what.
Phoenix Wright: When Apollo Justice came out, my friend let me try it for a bit. I liked it enough to go and play the first 3 and I did not regret it. Amazingly well written and entertaining! When talks of Phoenix Wright appearing in TvC started, I thought it would be interesting. I wasn’t actively campaigning for him, but if he was in I’d definitely try him out. Needless to say, he’s 100% accurate to his source material, and since Ace Attorney is one of my favourite Capcom series (along with Darkstalkers and Okami, but my number 1 is Sengoku Basara), his spot on my team was secured.
Amaterasu: Originally, when Vanilla came out, I wanted to use Team Oriental Girls, but Chun-Li was too fast for me (I could at least do her combos in TvC…in this game, Lightning Legs comes out WAY too easily) and Ammy was awkward. Plus, I felt kind of bad because I never did beat Okami—it was such a long game with
almost TOO much put into it. I actually ended up beating Okamiden before Okami. After buying the artbook for Okami and reading the developers’ thoughts and feelings, I made two goals for myself. The first was to beat Okami. The second was to beat all of Amaterasu’s trials in Vanilla before UMvC3 came out. To my surprise, I actually finished them all, and I beat Okami too. I could finally appreciate Amaterasu and her story. She still feels a bit awkward, but I’m determined to do well with her like the other two.
Part of the reasons I hated Vanilla was because it felt like the roster was pretty bad, especially on the Capcom side. I settled with Team Darkstalkers, but I didn’t even like Morrigan or Felicia (in DS, my top 4 is Hsien-Ko, Jedah, Bishamon and Q-bee). With Phoenix Wright joining the roster and me putting work into learning Amaterasu, I’ve finally found a team I’m happy with, even if I’m not winning much.
