Just a few side thoughts really…
Folks, we’ve got to do better.
I got into a minor “back and forth” with someone today regarding my claim that Wesker can do 1 million for 1 meter.
Now… according to the person I was debating with, I’m lying simply based off of the fact that “Wesker is overused, and if it were possible it would have been discovered by now.”
Well… that’s just a load of bullshit. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
People who play Marvel typically tend to find something worthy of being called “broken” and just abuse it endlessly without ever experimenting further; be it with that particular character or others. Well… fuck that. That’s also why “the tragedy of Final Round XV” happened. Believe it or not, there are some of us who play characters because we like them in general. And because I actually LIKE Wesker, I didn’t get complacent with doing the typical shit everyone else does. In fact, I -refuse- to play any character I don’t like (And with the exception of Taskmaster [Long story pickup], Spencer [Mission Mode pickup], and Dormammu [Preview looked interesting before vanilla released], I liked all of my characters before I ever gave 2 fucks about Marvel).
So despite what may look like a brilliant effort to tier whore, I’m literally playing all the characters I actually -like- and havn’t even really changed my teams up since Vanilla (barring the addition of Strider and Vergil whom were not present). Instead of figuring out how to copy what everyone else was doing, I sat and figured out how to do things on my own. Because of that, yes I can potentially break 1 mil with 1 meter from anywhere with Wesker. The combo is also meter positive and not particularly difficult to do (in fact, it’s my clean-hit BnB), and I figured out the concept of it the first damn day Ultimate released. I actually think it’s pretty funny that it hasn’t been figured out yet (or rather, hasn’t been put out there yet), but it just lends to my point… people think something is already “broken” and get complacent.
It should not be immediately assumed that because a character is “overused” then that character has also actually been explored. Like I said, people who play Marvel tend to get complacent with what they’re doing real fast. Especially in the case of Wesker who is viewed by many people as “the best character in the game” (he’s personally not in my top 5 from a tiering standpoint). Don’t make the mistake of sitting there twiddling your thumbs waiting for everyone to figure things out for you or you’ll always be playing a game of catchup.
Even in Vanilla when I claimed Phoenix could get 1 million off of a throw without XF folks didn’t believe me for largely the same reason. Ask Clockw0rk about the combo I messaged to him a little while before Evo.
TL;DR
Don’t immediately assume that a character being used by everyone has been thoroughly explored. Also don’t assume that if the masses can’t do something yet then it means its impossible. Even if you do absorb other people’s tech, use it to come up with something that works best -for you.- Don’t just go combo thread squatting and wait to be spoon fed; and definitely don’t presume anyone possessing “unknown tech” is a liar just because it hasn’t been handed to you.
