Stephaaaaaaaane!
that would be a no
did i mention marvel earlier?
so nehow, I contacted illinites, and they said we could have another tournament sept. 27th, and there is another open space in october.
so what do you guys (UI people) think? another slash n smash tourney in september? and something else in oct.?
i was actually thinking that it might actually be a good idea if we did a tourney without gg for a change. i mean, although we do have a solid scene for gg (and it’s probably much stronger than scene for any other game on campus right now), whenever we held a tournament gg always got the short end of the stick in terms of entrants and buzz.
even for the tourney last weekend, we weren’t sure if we could get even 10 entrants for 3s since we didn’t know if anybody aside from andrew and marc even plays the game anymore. well, that’s partially true since most of the 3s entrants were total scrubs… but it still ended up getting more entrants than gg in the end.
well okay, i actually considered that for a tournament last year, and was talking to aric. he brings up this point, “everyone in the club’s primary game is guilty gear, so what is the point of taking it out?”
that is a really good point. what is the point of catering to other people here? this club was made so we can have a center for people to meet and play games. it was built on guilty gear anyways.
we could always pick another game, that not all of us can play very well and also attract lotsa scrubs.
let me put it this way. everyone who actually cares and does something for the club plays guilty gear. i can’t really say the same for any other game we host.
if i may comment on this…
since it is an illinites tourney i think you should have games that appeal to a large amount of people. even if it turns out to be more of a fun thing. for example, the free-for-all smash tourney, though it wasnt really competitive smash worthy really, was a lot of fun for the participants and spectators. it gets a lot of people involved and this is the real goal of illinites.
the 2v2 tourney on the other hand, was still fun for the people, but more difficult to run b/c the entrants would dissapear and didnt know standard tourney ettiquette (like, dont leave the tourney site, report match results right away, etc).
that said, i dont think it would be out of the question to host 3 tourneys that evening… a couple of fun and easy tourneys and a serious gg tourney.
you could easily do gg on one station for all the serious gg players. it could be single elim, double elim, 2 man team single elim… all are possible even with the time constraints.
and then you could do a couple of single elimination tourneys for more mainstream games, like sc3, mario kart, or whatever. not only that you could have another sign up for the club and get more people to join, since these would likely attract a bunch of people.
i think its important for the gg people to have an actual tourney setting, b/c the play and pressure in those situations is unique. so i dont think gg should be taken out.
just my thoughts.
mvc2
smash would serve as a gateway to let a lot of people in the know
but you cant drop gg, because without it, what WOULD we play? its not like sf3 has people lining up at the door to play, and even mvc2 is pretty dead at this point
plus slash’n’smash = catchy
u guys could run freezy blood
we could do that, but then the tournament would be… me, yosh, and a whole lotta ppl who dunno how to play.
hell, me and yosh only sorta know how to play.
3d fighters are like 10 times more popular than 2d. run some 3d fighters. it’s nice to have games catered to your own but like andy said, i don’t think that’s the point of illnites.
thats why we have smash there.
besides, smash is a lot more popular than any 3d fighter. including soul calibur.
that is pretty much the reason why we don’t do guilty gear and 3s, or like guilty gear and ST.
i would do 3s and smash, but hell, more of us can play guilty gear than we can 3s.
other guys are pretty much on point with me, but this is what i wanted to say:
it’s true that gg probably has the greatest number of players who are currently in the competitive scene on this campus, but that shouldn’t warrant it from being the most important game at illinites, which is meant to be a recreational event open to the entire student body. yes, i enjoy playing guilty gear but i think it defeats the purpose of our organization if we’re so fixated on “guilty gear” instead of “fighting games”. i admit guilty gear is the only game where i’m half decent at, but i do enjoy playing other games as well. at quad day, there definitely was three or four times greater insterest in smash, tekken and soul calibur than gg. we’re going to be running gg tournaments all year long. i don’t think it would hurt to have at least one event where we don’t have to be tied down by the fact that we’re guilty gear players.
i was talking to scott earlier today and he thinks that it would be a good change of pace, too.
we already went over this last year, but it’s a pretty poor mentality to associate certain games with “scrubs” and “button mashers”. if anything, that’s the type of mindset scrubs have. also, you made a reference to aric…
^^^what he said.
let’s play sometime, i’ll see if you got what it takes to learn.
crosses fingers for T5 tourney
i dunno, i m still standing by my point. i don’t mind having guilty gear out of the next illinites, but i don’t really see the point.
if we don’t have guilty gear, then what game? I don’t want to put soul calibur or tekken in if we are already going to have smash in, because almost none of us play those games with the exception of 1 or 2 people in the club.
Games for illinites:
SCIII
Smash Brothers
ST
Those 3 games will guarantee lots of people. And I think it’s pretty unfair that we always run GG, because that’s pretty much free money for people in our group. For at least this tournament, we need to run other games.
Besides, we’ll be able to play GG after the tournament, or maybe we’ll have a GG machine set up so we can play while the tournament is going on.
Goddamn, we’ve almost filled up stage 2 of teh UIUC thread… I got dibs on making the next one, though.
omg yes.
the point we’re trying to make is that illinites isn’t for catering to our own little group as has been done in the past, it’s to cater to the general (uiuc) public and thus running gg would probably not generate the most interest. that being said, i dont think anybody’s gonna be extremely upset if you decide to run gg again.
also, you have to think about how many setups you’ll have and where to get them.
