UFGL: Underrated Fighting Game League

 okay dude, i’m not gonna put up that much for Monster, seriously. i’ll play casual and tournament at NEC, in a variety of games - look, i’ll even help do brackets, we can do round robin, whatever- but i’m not putting up that much for Monster. what the hell good does it do for Monster to throw up cash in your pocket like that?

tell you what - hold onto that 100, let it chill for a month or so, and add it to the pot as a pot bonus for the game. I’ll do it too, i’ll throw in a pot bonus as well. that’s added incentive for fools to come out and try to beat you. not this whole, “oh, i’mma hype this shit by playing some fool nobody’s ever heard of in a game nobody’s ever heard of~” nah, that shit doesnt work. add it to the pot, make the game entry cheap - or fuck it, make it free since you know you’re so fucking good at it and fools coming off of other games aren’t going to know how to adjust. pot bonuses generally make people want to enter games that have lower entry fees.

we’re trying to make this game have regular offline players show up for it, not turn it into Marvel.

Huh? That’s not how it happened. Your memory is a little shot.

After the last patch came out I played somewhere between 1 and 2 months before I quit. In fact, I kept playing Delga after the patch; even with the nerfs I was still able to win. Although, I did try to play Maya (for about 4-5 days) but that was because I was getting bored. See, after the patch Maya had the biggest change (read: nerf); and so I was going to try and make her viable, but that just wasn’t possible. So, I switched back to Delga for a little while longer, then quit because the game had gotten stale. I’ve been waiting for the next patch to come back, and I’ll still play Delga (even though he’s getting more nerfs).

And about me being decent. Sometime after the last patch, but before I quit, you said yourself that the top 4 players were Fooligar, Xenozip, Ayaimmortal, and Spootz (though I was the worst of the four). That’s not my words, those are yours. Delga might have carried me, but I’m the one that made that possible. Almost all of the tools that Delga used; I came up with (at least in the US community), and you know that that’s true. I was one of the game’s original players, and, I like to think, an innovator.

All that being said, you guys need to take your argument into one of the Monster threads, or through PMs. This thread is about trying to get people into underrated fighting games, not about Monster Money Matches.

Yes you were the better of the other players which is why i placed you in the top 4 back then. But honestly you werent on Xeno’s fooligars or my level in the game. I give you your props. You did innovate ALOT of shit for delga and that gets massive respect from me. You did alot more than chibita ever has for the game and i dont want you to think that i am disregarding that. From me personally i want to thank you. It was you who decided to give up once delga got too nerfed. I am not the only person to remember this. Almost anything that the american community found out about delga was from you. But your gameplay suffered even though you innovated very well. I am not saying you are a bad player. I am saying that much like everyone else(including myself) you needed more improvement. Xiii would have been a top player too but he played a super shitty character and that held him back. Rogue as stated before was a good player but had to stop for various reasons. There is a long list of people who were decent at monster. But the undisputed top 3 players was indeed me xeno and fooligar.

I will end the rest of this discussion in this thread. If you want to talk about it. Feel free to find me in IRC.

Okay, I want to be able to finalize the list by next week (but I’ll still take suggestions, it’s just that I’ll be less lenient;) I want to limit the size of the list, because it is going to be hard to run all these tournaments in one major, even though I believe it is possible, I want to make room to run “specialty” games like MvC1, SFA3 (to try and revive the game,) and possibly HF (the first great fighting game, still holds up today.) I also want to hold some SNK tournaments that Dark Geese possibly doesn’t get the chance to hold (at the most, it will probably be 5 SNK games.)

For the list, I’m going to get rid of Arcana Heart, that game won’t be needing this League. I’m going to get rid of SC3:AE from this list, with no console release looming, and SC4 coming out next year (probably less than 8 months,) it’s going to be hard to run tournaments for this game; now some of you will say why Battle Fantasia is on the list, even though it is Arcade, only available in Japan… the game just came out, and because Arc Systems is the developer, as well as the hardware the game is being run on, it is likely that this game sees a console release. I’ve been reading that this game hasn’t been popular, but I’ll still leave it on the list, until otherwise.

I’ve made a second list, and you all get to choose 5 games that you would like to see on the list (give reasons.) I’ll add the games in probably by the middle or end of next week (the ones that get the higher amount of relevant tallies will more than likely be added, rather than ones with lower tallies.)

Bleach DS 2
Cyberbots
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3/Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road (PSP)
Dead or Alive 3.1
Martial Masters
Primal Rage
Project Justice
Sonic the Fighters
Street Fighter EX3
Variable Game (Choose a game that you think should be on the list)

bleach ds 2 for all the reasons ive explained before

project justice cause it gets no love and its a solid game from a solid franchise.

Thats all. Not votes for any of the others.

~My picks~
Sonic the Fighters: Although the matches are short and the catch up system hold it down a little. The game gets way more hate than it deserves. It has a wide variety of unique moves and many other features that have are not used it other fighters. What really stands out here is how different it is. Although some of the game can be similar to a R/P/S system there are many other aspects to the game that do not follow it. The game has some solid and approach methods for each character, there is a lot of choices to be made after getting hit that take knowledge of your character and your opponents. The landing tactic and characters land chasing moves add a lot of depth to the game. Hyper mode add to some nice and crazy 'V-ism’ish moments too the game (though much weaker). The game is getting rather old (came out 1996) and has never really gotten any love. There is a lot of crazy stuff in this game and I would not want to see it all go to waste.

Primal Rage: I haven’t seen much high level play of this in a long time. It gets absolutely no attention and yet I have yet to see what was so wrong with the game. It was fun, fast, and had lots of good features. Pretty solid overall and yet people hate on it all the time.

Bloody Roar Primal Fury/Extreme: Alright, this game I am actually pissed that nobody even looks at it seriously now. It is a pretty damn good game with most characters being pretty balanced, though Uranus and Chronos are a little above the crowd (but definitely not unstoppable good). There are so many misconceptions about this game and it deserves to have another look at. The game is actually tournaments worthy. However, for tournaments I think the timing should be changed from 60 (default) to 90 seconds.

JoJo: Everyone talks about this game. Looks pretty good minus the awesome damage of Petshop’s combos. I could be willing to play it if it gets picked up.

Project Justice: Looks like a well made game and looks and sounds pretty damn solid. But it obviously gets no love since I haven’t heard of it before this topic. But after watching videos and hearing people talk about it… damn it sounds pretty nice.

the only games that I know is SFEX3. I somewhat know project justice but no where near the level of anyone that played the game seriously.

That said, it wouldn’t be fair for me to pick games that I have little to no exposure with, so I’ll just pick EX3. With that said though, its unlikely that EX will get many votes as most fans are silent. So you might as well take it off the list now.

I can only vote for Bleach DS 2, because its the only game on that list that I have experience in. I’m voting for it because it has a large, diverse cast and a large number of competitive characters. It also has a great game system and is a blast to play, AND it is easy to find in the US.

I pick Project Justice

Tarkan,

Can you put some youtube links to the games you’re suggesting so people can see those games in action?

Vampire Savior: Darkstalkers Combination Cup DVD samples (recent I think)

Vamp hype.

B3 matches:

http://www.youtube.com/user/gogetassj4666

http://www.youtube.com/user/odjnryu

you’ll find plenty of general info and character specific stuff in the wiki

What is the more preferred game for top players between Budokai 3 and Shin Budokai (PSP)? And is game faqs still the place for the best information (just a curious question, this won’t hinge on anything?) Also, I heard there was a 45 man B3 tournament in Ohio, is there a link to this information?

My 5 picks:

DOA++: Really underrated and overlooked game that has the smoothest counter system ive ever played with, and IMO one of the best of the whole DOA series.

Project Justice/Rival Schools: Don’t care which one, but one of these is dying ot be played in a tournament. . easily Capcom’s best 3D fighters.

Tech Romancer: Very unique and fun game that does not play like any other 3D fighter, so for being different and a change of pace I think this one deserves attention.

Any Darkstalkers Game: Does not matter to me which one, any Darkstalkers/Vampire game needs to be played competitively. Fast and deep game that influenced the VS series and GG.

VF3: If possible I would like to see some VF3. It was huge back in the day, but currently I think people forgot it exists at all, so I would like to see it, plus the gameplay is the most unique in the whole VF series.

jojo’s is really the best

Here some JoJo shit.-

I ran the 45 person Budokai 3 tournament in Chicago back in May 07. There was obviously tons of interest. The tournament lasted for 5 hours. There’s plenty interest out there for the game that many other people overlook when they wrote the game off way back when.

cuzX3YP1cQM"]Here’s a link to the first match. You can just hear the amount of people. (Playlist link ).

Granted, as good as Budokai 3 is, I do like Shin Budokai Another Road better. The main problem as you expect is that it’s only on PSP, handhelds not being the best platform. So with that being said, Budokai 3 still gets my vote for tournament play. Plenty of B3 matches on Youtube (as Crazymasterhand pointed out).

PS: Budokai 3 Greatest Hits should be used (I have a copy)

vampire savior - balanced, getting slightly more popular since the collection came out, and for my money still the best fighter capcom has ever made. The japanese still play it so it would be nice for the u.s to start getting into it as well.

tobal 2 - deep game, that never got the attention it deserved, still one of the top 3 3d fighters around.

psychic force 2012 - solid game that had a tiny following but always deserved better. not to mention there is a new one coming out for the ps3( assuming it has been canceled or something)

jojo’s bizarre adventure- I just love jojo and the game was fun. Some people whine about chaca being broken but the match vids ive seen haven’t shown it. I’d take jojo over cvs2 anyday of the week.

cyberbots - only got the game once so I would like to see more.

In all honesty as long VS makes a showing I’m happy.

I thought vanilla Iced was the broken character?

No, Petshop is. ;(
