Yeah, that clause was a bit of a slap in the face.
Now it seems as though they won’t get anyone who can use a soldering iron to lay hands on their virgin product…
i was thinking of doing cool things like making that razer block a switch to turn on LED’s on the stick, replace the wiring, install a neutrik…
now all my dreams are shot down
edit:
actually these terms seem valid only for one month which is the testing period
i think we need ultradavid in here to interpret this legal binding contract once we hit the submit key
Conditions last until terminated (#2), no end date specified anywhere to the terms. The ‘beta program’ lasts a month, and then feedback is required, but that’s separate from the conditions, otherwise the ‘you wont badmouth Razer, evar’ clause would be kind of silly. Even if an end to the terms was specified, “Razer reserves the rights to extend, shorten, or terminate the program. Razer endeavours but shall not be bound to provide prior notice of such decision to the Tester.” so they could extend it indefinitely at their option, without notice.
EDIT: CRAP! They’re even in the ‘Recommend’ portion, too. I wanted to at least go through and put in glowing recommends for everyone listed, but I can’t.
My name is Hilmar and I am part of the team at Razer responsible for the Razer Arcade Stick and its beta program. We’ll be amending the terms on our page slightly in a short while but without going all legal I can let you know that modding the prototypes the selected participants will receive is fine with us. We are encouraging you to mod it in any way you feel like. Hope this helps clear this up.
I wonder how easy it would be to convince them to provide “extra” PCB mounting supports, with nothing mounted of course, for purposes of Dual-Modding, or LED modding, etc.
Kinda like the idea people had for the extra solder/terminal points, but more for physical space to put our extra PCB’s.
EDIT: Err…wrong thread, but hey, I’ll leave it up as a totally narcissist self-nomination. I’ve got a few design ideas.
I sincerely appreciate that you folks are taking the idea of community participation seriously. No matter what happens, please know that.
I have a small business that is centered on making custom parts and electronics, including for off the shelf arcade sticks. You can read more about them in the ‘Kitty’ thread linked in my sig. Those board are made to go into MadCatz TE FightSticks and Hori VLX arcade sticks. Your arcade sticks would be a welcome addition to that family. I think we can both see the benefit of an easy to install after-market product that would add support for most of the rest of the consoles in the past 30 years that your stick doesn’t currently support.
My first concern is the “nor create derivate works, enhancements, add-ons to any part of the product” part of 1.b of the terms, which would bar me from doing exactly that. Part 6.a “All titles, proprietary rights and intellectual property rights to or arising from the Beta Product belong exclusively to Razer.” is also a concern; information that is arguably intellectual property, such as using a certain brand wire connector and the pinout of that connector, would be needed (not from you, I can find it out myself) for the add-on in mind. Lastly, the lack of concrete date when the terms and conditions would expire is unsettling.
Having to get legal involved when you’re actively trying to reach out to your customer base sucks, I understand that. If the final decision is that the terms must stand unchanged, no problem; you’re doing plenty as-is. I just wanted to be clear why I can’t participate.
