I’d start a Deadpool thread here, but it’ll have to wait till my bro gets them for me from UK, but mind you one reason why I don’t recommend the Ultimate series is because it’s way to0 modern/dark and is aimed to impress teens and kids of the new generation with completely different backgrounds than their originals.
Take Colossus for example; in the original comic he was from the country living a normal life away from the troubles of cities, in Ultimate he’s with the Russian mob O_o, yeah what a way to make a character interesting for the youth of tomorrow.
I would still recommend The Ultimates and Ultimate Spider-Man, as well as Bendis’ and Brian K. Vaughan’s arcs on Ultimate X-Men and certain arcs of Ultimate Fantastic Four. Modernizing the characters isn’t necessarily a bad thing. One huge positive was how rebooting the Marvel universe takes away the convoluted backstory. (Except, it’s been what, like 6 or 7 years since it started now? So some of those comics are starting to get a little convoluted anyway.) The modern storytelling and dialogue also goes down a lot easier than Stan Lee’s stuff, too.
Mark Millar can be guilty of trying too hard to be “down wit’ da youf” but he’s not the only guy who’s written Ultimate books. And The Ultimates is so good that it doesn’t even matter that it has his name on it.
