"Train harder!" - Ibuki Street Fighter V Discussion

Twitch.tv/rommaler he is starting to stream a lot and plays ibuki. top 200 player who doesn’t mind answering tech questions. He also mentioned flash might be making the switch from vega to ibuki in the near future

Cool I’ll have to check him out. I’ve seen his name before.

I don’t blame Flash for trying something different. Vega looked fun to me but I just don’t like the not having a reversal thing. Just never sat well with not having a get out of jail card in SF even if the pressure isn’t always tremendous in this game. It’s just nice when you’re fighting a Ken, Cammy or Mika and don’t have burn a V Reversal or block forever to get out of being in a bad spot. He’s also a well known Guilty Gear player and used Viper in IV so a tech/setup driven character like Ibuki is right up his alley. He’ll most likely complain about her bad buttons, but she’s got enough dirty set ups and walks fast enough to offset I think.

watched that dude for about an hour, didnt see anything special. although i learned a few things.
but he pretty much plays the standard ibuki minus the unsafe rollercoaster-wont-work-anywhere (looking at you majorboy).

yeah, pretty clean player. Thats just ibuki though, she isn’t very special until the bombs come out lol. One thing i notice a lot of ibuki’s do that i don’t is heavy kick dash approaches, I guess it’s awkward enough to not get AA’d a lot of times or something. I try to play as clean as possible but I find that usually ends up as me just reacting to people all day trying to get my pokes out

her well spaced hk dash is a good approach tool since its awkward to antiair. if you misspace your AA you eat a combo. so a lot of people just dont bother. it gets beat by walking forward but many are too scared when it comes suddenly.
there is time and place for every move.

i am more shocked meaty slide after raida works so well. you can see it miles away, why people are pressing buttons

Majorboy and Lucius are definitely the more risky/set up heavy style of Ibuki players. I don’t think it’s surprising that majorboy is the number one Ibuki online though because there are lot of people who just don’t fight against Ibuki enough to even get used to her basic gimmicks and then majorboy has stuff that he pretty much only does. He jumps a lot less than he did in his earlier matches which has helped his neutral game a lot.

It helps to use kunais to make the HK command dash more difficult to anti air. Cancelling early into LP kunai can hit them in the legs for a meaty combo into c.MP or can force them to cough up an AA that whiffs and go into punish.

my guess would be people are so terrified / conditioned to respect the overhead they arn’t blocking low

there is no overhead mixup though, its either dash-mp/throw or slide. and you can see slide because you have to do it early. i bet you can dp that on reaction everytime. probably not online but i think its possible even online.
that said, ibuki is like fang on release. nobody plays = no practice = you dont know wtf is going on

about this guy - “this dude is mashing. why would you press a button. omg why you do this.” all while he loses.
cant take it no more, i am done. would be a good stream if he didnt bitch so much.

Yeah that’s why I don’t watch many American/Euro streams. Too much emotion and game/player blaming.

I see you deviljin

deviljiiiin I remember you from the 3s days

I’m on that ibuki train doe. I haven’t been this hype for a character in this game yet. I was liking Mika but when you get spaced out it felt stupid only having like… dash, jump, or c.hp. Now I have hella tools and it’s great.

Vega x Ibuki is a perfect duo. You cover three Vega terrible matchups having Ibuki as secondary (Laura, Mika, Cammy). I think she might be an interesting pick agaisnt Ken too, what do you guys think on Ibuki vs Ken and Ibuki vs Nash?

isnt ibuki kinda ass against cammy though? worse buttons, cant deal with divekicks reliably.

nah, Ibuki vs Cammy is very similar to R.Mika vs Cammy imo

Cammy random factor goes down once Ibuki get in and get some frame advantage. Mika does more damage but Ibuki is better at defense than Mika (her vreversal basically make her go from a lost situation to a frame advantage situation which hurts cammy/laura/mika pressure a lot). Cammy normals are better used offensively than for defense, which is the weak point Ibuki can exploit.

If anyone has a different opinion i would like to hear the insights

Also, protip: use more command dash LK, that thing is as unreactable as ken run vskill lol i’ve been using it lately with soooo much success. If you condition them to blocking they even start blocking to the different side thinking you crossed them up with the command dash MK lol

Ibuki is able to stuff a lot of cammys approach options, bonsho kick really gets her scared of just throwing out buttons at a certain range so you just gotta make sure your AA game is tight.

What do you guys do vs chun? I literally get button mashed to death and whenever i try and counter poke it whiffs. I hate losing to people like this, no thought process just buttons

i try not to press almost anything and wait till she does smth stupid by getting impatient or negative frames so i can start my offence.
still get bodied though.

Ibuki does well against Nash. Felt pretty comfortable using her against NuckleDu’s Nash. He has to move in closer to throw sonic booms since throwing them from far away can be stuffed by kunais. Which you can safely reload after throwing from that distance. Forces him to play closer. His lack of 3 frame and a reversal is also good for her once she gets in.

I think Ibuki vs Cammy is 5/5. Like said above f+HK and s.HK can really deal well with a lot of her mid ranged options and Cammy’s dive kick is more about waiting it out than really what tools you have. Doesn’t matter what character you’re using, if she wants to go for a dive kick there isn’t much you can immediately throw that won’t get stuffed. You have to bait it and then anti air right before it goes active. If you press to AA it too soon you’ll whiff and get punished. She only has 900 stun so she’s pretty easy to stun and bait into throwing a bad DP which you can CC punish and then RIP. Which then usually opts them to V Reversal which is minus on block and can whiff at farther ranges. Which burns away her V Trigger comeback. V Skill of course keeps her neutral buttons in check.

Chun Li is typical mathcup. Be careful of her s.HP and just either try to stay out of its range and counter poke with V Skill/f+HK or move inside of it and pressure with s.LK, s.MP or s.MK depending on what confirm you’re looking for. s.LP or c.MP can reaction stuff IALL’s and sometimes I preemptively throw out s.HK to AA it and fish for crush counter into big damage. You have lots of options against her fireball including kunais, slide, f+HK and air EX kunai so it’s not really an issue. EX SBK gets her out of the left/right mixups (especially the bomb stuff) pretty easily so you’ll have to improvise more vs her during those situations.

Yeah, I like that although Ibuki is centered around rushdown, she has solid tools from a range as well. I picked up Mika for a while during the game’s early release and although she’s fun to use and basically the best character at close range in the game, she felt pretty polarizing to play. Just a lot of matchups where she just doesn’t feel like she’s any use until she gets close. Especially vs projectile characters or characters like Gief and Birdie. Her slower walk speed doesn’t really help.

I like that Ibuki gets the fast walk speed of a footsie character which helps with whiff punishing, but still has ranged options so my approach and gameplan can be more varied than just “take inevitable damage walking and hope you land a clap”. I think that’s why there’s only really like 2 high level solo Mika mains and the arguable other best Mika player uses 2 other characters.

My local community best nash player destroys my ibuki @“DevilJin 01” , i wonder what im doing wrong… and you know my ibuki is not bad. If you have any footage of those matches i would be very grateful

I don’t really have any recent stuff vs Nash players. I had a decent set vs Otter who has a solid Nash, butt other than that I just face random ranked Nashs and havent fought one in about more than a week now.

If I find some matches ill let you know. Youre better off showing some matches that you have played vs Nash. Ideally the offline matches vs him.
