Tower Defense Thread

I just scanned through the thread. Any windows mobile or android TD games you would recommend?

so I’m through with everything after a ~11 hours. it’s ‘good’ but can’t reach the top. the story was pretty neat tho, kept the game alive towards the end. you get a story decision as well x) for that price it’s worth grabbing.

Why has nobody posted about Bloons TD or its many sequels?

to be honest, I find it extremely boring after a few minutes. if you find a working order ONCE you can go with that for EVERY map since it’s the same order of enemies, too. also, hands down, balloons are boring enemies to begin with^^

Kingdom Rush is one of the best TD’s I’ve ever played but it’s TOO DAMN SHORT!

indeed. again, I’m envious that I don’t have access to the app market yet, because there is an addon /full version with way more level and new stuff afaik.

So what do you get for buying the premium?

Me: Hey guys, WC3TfT is a great game, lets play each other. I will be orc!!
Friend: Have you tried this td?
Me: What is a TD?

And we never played each other again

Blizzard, the pioneer for TD games. Or no?

blizzard certainly not. it’s the community who made TD maps.

Foreword: This is not an official SRK article. I’ve just been playing this lately and figured I’d offer some info for anyone curious about it. However, it will be written like a formal review as I’d like to keep in practice. Given the choice between posting a whole new thread (this seemed excessive for a DLC pack) or reviving an idle but relevant thread, I went with the latter in hopes it’ll prompt more TD discussion here.

While Hidden Path’s recent Kickstarter drive fell well short of its goal to do a full sequel to Defense Grid, it did bring in enough to do an expansion pack. Containment adds eight new stages to play on, with multiple modes apiece and additional storyline to go with it; this makes it very similar to the other DLC packages. In contrast to You Monster, the challenges are much more conventional and the difficulty gradually increases. This makes it ‘more of the same’, though whether that’s good or bad depends on how much you enjoy Defense Grid in general.

Each stage features a story mode that follows the usual rules, but you have other options. The extra modes vary by map, but common choices include Balanced Build (you must build one of each tower type before you can build duplicates), Shredder (the enemy count is vastly increased), Frozen Core (dropped cores do not return to their housing, so the next alien wave can pick it up where it lies), and Green Towers Only (no upgrading towers). This does a lot to add variety, and lets you play however you like. It’s fine if you just want to complete the story by any margin of success, while those who enjoy mastering the map and wringing every last bit of play-time out of it are covered as well.

Veteran players will probably have no problem with the first few levels, since your usual tactics will suffice. It’s the later stages that will challenge you, as they employ special rules like disabling your orbital laser or starting with only basic towers and enabling the rest over later waves. The ones that don’t do this sort of thing have very complex layouts, requiring you to manage multiple attack routes. The overall difficulty is a little hard, but rarely outright cruel or unfair; by the time you get to Containment you should be good enough to handle most of it.

Containment is primarily a level pack, so you shouldn’t expect lots of changes to the actual game formula. They apparently assumed that solid stage design using the existing mechanics will work, and it mostly does. However, they have done a few things to break up the monotony. The stage and art variety is a definite plus, covering enough types of terrain that you won’t see the same colors over and over.

There is also new storyline content that explores the history of Fletcher, your AI companion. He’s back, and is joined by new characters voiced by Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Wreck-it Ralph) and Ming-Na Wen (E.R.). They play a defense commander and an AI respectively, and seem to know a bit about Fletcher’s past. While that sounds promising and their acting is fine, their characters are simply too limited to be of much interest. Even if you’re a huge fan of either of these performers, Containment doesn’t give them enough material to be a selling point. In other words, your purchasing decision needs to primarily involve your interest in the new maps.

With all this laid out, is it worth buying? It can be, and I certainly enjoyed my time with it. However, it really depends on how fond you are of the general Defense Grid formula. The content in this DLC pack is very much like the others, so if you’ve had your fill of the game then this won’t bring you back. On the other hand, if blasting waves of aliens across eight well-designed stages while Fletcher and a few guest stars cheer you on sounds fun… then there’s enough quality here to justify spending $5.

Thanks for that pointing out. Looks indeed worthwhile, but sadly, I never warmed up with Defense Grid that much. I’m more a fan of “quality over quantity” TD styles of games. I prefer to have a set path and pricey, but strong towers, instead of placing masses of cheap ones to build my own maze.

Another decent TD that was released not too long ago is

While it’s very notciable that it has Kingdom Rush as role model, it features some very interesting new approaches to the genre. Instead of “towers”, you build “camps”, that can include up to 3 units out of 4 classes. The units can move around (within a radius), have health and different traits per class and upgrade path. You can mix them as you wish or just use the same class for each camp. Once you have all 3 slots filled, you can upgrade the units individually.Once you have upgraded a unit 3 times, you can chose one of 2 different paths for that unit to specialize it. E.G: Slow Mage => Healer\Buffer or Chain Lightning Black Mage. Warrior => Tank-Dwarf or Ninja. That opens up a rather strategic new idea, since you can mix them. 2 Tanks + 1 Mage that you upgrade to a healer and buffer? 2 Archer that wreck havoc with a slow mage on their side? Or 3 Engineers in a central area that pulverize whole troops with splash damage? It’s up to you.

What’s also refreshing is that almost every map has a unique event in it. A Kraken that helps you do kill units that pass it. A Giant Golem that awakes and kills your units and enemies alike. Constant Lightning that kills your units that are close, but also gives gold benefits etc.

It also has a typical upgrade system and features spells (slow, stone, damage, heal etc).

The game is also rather challenging. It features a hard mode, I’m sure is almost unbeatable, as even normal yields a very high challenge already
Here is also my only real gripe with the game. You obtain the spells RANDOMLY when you kill a unit. That means sometimes you won’t get a spell at all, and sometimes you get more then you can make use off. It often depended solely on the “luck” of spell drops whether I perfected a level, or lost altogether. That was a huge downer, and I hope they either patch it, or make a different system for a sequel \ new game. That’s the reason why I stopped hard mode halfway through, as it became more and more depended on the spells.

All in all, still one of the best TDs (though not in the same league as its role model Kingdom Rush) and refreshingly interesting. Play it:

zUkUu: Yeah… even I’ll admit Defense Grid is starting to hit a point of diminishing returns. I enjoy it a lot, and I felt this was a decent reason to dust it off again ($5 to kill a few evenings sounds good to me), but I don’t think they’re going to be able to wring much more out of this formula. Their next release definitely needs to be Defense Grid 2 or some other project because I’ve about had my fill. Fletcher’s a very fun character to listen to, but Containment marks the point where I’ve had enough and I want something new from here on.

I notice you listed several other TD games earlier in the thread, and I’m going to check them out later this week (along with Incursion) per your recommendation. Funny thing, I used to openly hate tower defense. I now realize this is because I was exposed to nothing but “me too!” bandwagon-hopping games when the genre was first becoming popular. Defense Grid opened my eyes to the idea these can actually be good games and I’m grateful for that, though I also want to branch out and try some others too. Thanks for your thoughts!

PixelJunk Monsters is funmazing.

Yeah, that’s a decent TD on PSN. Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders is also fun.

I picked it up for $1 during last summer’s PixelJunk sale…
I haven’t played a TD game since the Starcraft 1 user map days, so this game is a really good intro back into the genre.
Never played Crystal Defenders though. Perhaps I should… hmm

Play Kingdom Rush and Cursed Treasure before, since they are free and better. Link is in op.

radiant TD is a must buy for any fan of the genre, probably the only TD better than PVZ.

years and years I’ve waited for TD thats as much fun as some of the WC3tft maps but I still haven’t found one.

pixeljunk monsters is pretty fun in coop with a friend, very relaxing game.

I couldnt get into plants vs zombies at all, didnt like the straight lanes at all and the hectic plant swapping.

I just want to sit there and level up towers into oblivion to blast away at the level 200 monsters who move like 1 inch per minute through my freeze tower canyon. any recommendations?

It’s kind of annoying when people post without reading any previous posts. Get on dat Radiant!
