Mortal Kombat Armageddon
It?s here.
After a much anticipated wait, Mortal Kombat Armageddon has finally arrived. But is it all that it?s kracked up to be?
The game boots up with the CGI intro that has been floating around online gaming sites for the past few months. And it?s still great. Especially when all the kombatants stop fighting to look up at the pyramid, and then Stryker punches Mileena in the ear. Yes MK fans, that?s right. Stryker is back, in all his ear-punching glory.
Let?s move on to my first impressions.
KOMBAT
Three options present themselves: Arcade, Versus and Practice. If I have to explain what the latter two options are, you need a punch to the ear.
Moving on, as soon as you load the kharacter selection screen, you?re bombarded with an array of over 60 fighters, already unlocked. There’s only 4 fighters that are locked, so don’t have a heart attack, Green. While this may seem quite daunting initially, it?s actually sorted in a logical fashion. Male fighters occupy the top four rows, females the next two, and the last two rows contain the boss/sub boss kharacters. This makes it a little easier to select your favorite fighter, unlike MvC2, where I still have trouble finding Tron Bonne. I swear her square is in a different place in every arcade. My only complaint is that there is no intro or bio on any of the kharacters. Since this is supposed to be the last great MK for current-gen systems, I would of liked to see bios with first appearances, short intros, sexual orientation or something. Oh well.
After picking your fighter, you have to fight your way up a ladder of 8 randomly generated opponents, and then fight Blaze at the top. The last opponent before Blaze is always one of the bosses/sub bosses. Unless that?s occurred randomly every single time I?ve played MKA, which I don?t think is the case. Or is it?
Blaze is a big giant blob of fire. Think Cinder from Killer Instinct on steroids. And then picture a steroid-induced Cinder eating 45 hard-shelled tacos a day for 365 days and you get Blaze. That?s a lot of tacos.
After beating Blaze, you?re treated to your kharacter?s ending. And by ending, I mean watching your character performing a kata while a short story is read to you via voice-over. All the katas are gay. They don?t even use their special powers during the kata sequences. I want to see Sub-Zero kreate a ice statute and then beat the living daylights out of it. But he doesn?t. The only one worth watching is Stryker?s. Because he punched Mileena in the ear. So give the man some respect.
MKA?s fighting system now includes air kombos and parries. You can even parry in the air. However, when you?re in the air, you?re usually on the receiving end of an air kombo. And you can?t parry in the middle of getting your ass kicked, even if you throw the controller at the ground.
Parrying works by pushing BACK and BLOCK at the same time. This puts you in a parry stance, and if someone hits you during this stance, you parry them and they get stunned for a second. If they don?t hit you, you just stand there in your parry stance and look stupid. Unless you picked Stryker. He never looks stupid.
Air Kombos are pretty generic fare. Once you get your opponent in the air, you just hit a series of button combinations to perform the air kombo. Some air button sequences throw your opponent to the ground, others throw you to the ground. Some of them make you drop to the ground and then bounce back, so you can hit another air kombo. The trick is figuring out how to launch your opponent. Everbody has a different move which launches. Except for Stryker. I can?t figure his out. Not that he needs it. He has a gun. Also, I can?t seem to hit air kombos on boss or sub-boss kharacters. That may be from lack of skill. Or lack of positive attitude. In any case, they don?t seem to launch high enough.
You only have two martial arts per character this time around, with the second stance being the weapon stance. Most boss characters only have one stance and no weapons. Stryker has nightsticks. And a tazer. And grenades. And a machine gun.
The stages are all interactive. You can throw people over cliffs, into acid baths and meat grinders, just to name a few. They?re fun. Especially if you?re playing with a friend. You can berate them verbally while you push their character into the path of an oncoming train. ?Yo bitch! The next station is death!? And so forth. You can unlock more stages in the Krypt.
And yes fatalities are back, but not in the way you think they are. Now they have kreate-a-fatality, which involves you entering the button combinations of a bunch of different mini-fatalities to kreate one big one. It’s like A-groove Manson.
KREATE A FIGHTER
Yes, you can kreate your own fighter now in MKA. And you can kustomize everything. Clothes, faces, body type, fighting style, moves, etc. You can even write your own ending. But no one reads it at the end. Which would have been kool. I would of wrote mine in Sanskrit.
So if you ever get bored of using the 60 + Fighters, you can make more, and even take your kharacter online to fight other people. Or you could just pick stryker and kick some serious ass.
KONQUEST
The all-new konquest mode is a side quest that plays much like MK: Shaolin Monks. You run around beating up random enemies, and kollect koins and other artifacts which can be used to unlock stuff in the krypt. There?s actually a storyline with realtime cutscenes as well. Which I suppose makes up for the lack of story in the Arcade mode. I haven?t played through it yet, but so far, you can punch, kick, throw, and even perform specials and fatalities on people. You play an all new character named Taven, and when you beat Konquest, you can use him in arcade mode et al. You also run into other MK kharacters during your quest, and some of them will challenge you to duels. You fight them like you do in arcade mode. I haven?t met Stryker yet, but I?m prepared to die a horrible death if I do. Either that or wet myself uncontrollably. Or both.
MOTOR KOMBAT
Motor Kombat is this year?s MK?s mini-game diversion. It?s like Mario Kart, if Mario was a pipe-wielding sadist plumber. With an attitude. You pick from 10 different racers, each with their own special powers, i.e. Scorpion?s kart can shoot spears that draws you into the next racer. You can pick up boosts and weapons, for your kart on the raceway. There are also koins for the krypt that you can kollect as well. I?ve only played it once, but it?s pretty fun. It?s hard to hit people with Scorpion?s spear though, because they have to be lined up with your kart.
THE KRYPT
The Krypt kontains all the unlockables and extras in MKA, which you buy with koins you collect from all the modes of play. Unlockables include extra kostumes, stages, soundtracks, artwork, etc etc. There?s lot to unlock (but not as much as say Deadly Alliance). There also a ? box, which, upon selecting it, prompts you to enter in a kode. I don?t know what it?s for. I hope it?s to unlock UMK3. Or maybe it kontains Stryker?s Bazooka.
FINAL SCORE
All in all, it?s a fun game to play, especially with all the little extra side games as well. Although it does feel unrefined, what with the lack of proper endings, bios etc, it is a fitting end to the MK series on current-gen systems.
8/10
P.S. Two days ago, when people started claiming that they had already bought the game while other people reported it hadn?t even been shipped yet, there was a lot of debate on whether screenshots of the box posted on the internet were fake or real. To that, I say:
