Toronto July 2008 Thread

Alright Toronto peeps, as you may know the Arcade near dundas square is closing down tomorrow. I don’t know how good it is but after hearing about an arcade in that area I went there today and it’s leaps and bounds over anything I’m accustomed to.

Having never been to a good Arcade and seeing my first just closing down, amazingly, the following day right after I’ve visited it; I will spend the rest of today and the whole (most) of tomorrow there.

I thought of writing here so that those who don’t know of it now do and so that I could meet some of the SRK members there.

If there are any arcades you guys hang out at or know of I’d appreciate hearing about them.

About the Arcades location, I haven’t been in Toronto for long so bear with me:

If you take the street (Yonge Street?) the arrow is point to it’s right after Aldo to your left.

Edit: I’ll be the dude hogging the SF3TS cabinet with a red shirt and black pants.

well playscape and getty are better than funland so wait till u get accustomed to that.

playscape is at keneday and steeles and getty is in the middle of nowhere (rihcmond hill, west or east commerce gate [i forogt which one] and highway 7)

Last Game

So Funland is closed for good now. Good games to whomever I played today.

And a big fuck you too all you haters out there. I’ve been going to Funland since I was 8. That was when Super Street Fighter II came out. Funland was the only place to have it set up tournament style. I used to skip school and search for quarters under couches just to play. My dad took me the first time, and my brother and I used to play there all the time, both of whom are now passed.

Funland gave birth to the Toronto 3rd strike scene. Remember T2? all those 3rd strike players were from downtown. They were using Genei-Jin when Shin Shoryuken was top tier at STC.

Oh well, another one bites the dust. RIP VA,VF,STC,METRO,DTFL. Playscape, you’re next.

P.S. I ended Samir’s 30 + win streak. :wgrin:

shit, is playscape really closing down

well if an arcade can’t make it in the most asianist mall in the biggest city in Canada, then it cant make it anywhere

but considering the sf4 and capcom vs. tatsuko will probably be on the newer systems and have mulitplayer via internet, it is only inevitable

lost to eric in a race to 10 when he spotted me 5 games. it was for money. i blame sleepiness

!!!

VA/VF, METRO, STC, Fairview, Downtown Funland, The Games Skybox, Wizard’s Castle BCC, Wizard’s Castle Woodbine, Shoppers World Fun Games, York Cove.

Christ that’s depressing.

Lovegety Station and Playscape are the sole survivors with the latter on its last legs.

Orbit was the place to be but they manage to fuck it up

I did manage to get in one last visit to Funland. Even got a free game of Area 51 out of it with a credit already in the machine and nobody bothering to use it.

RIP Funland. It’s been… fun.

hi kin, hows everything with you.
im really sry to hear your brother passes away.

may i ask what happened?

woodbine is still up, although it’s not much anymore.

fuck if anything, blame xbox live for all the arcades closing.

oh god. xbox live cvs2…THE HORROR!

seriously, i’d get owned by the johnsons.

No love for Pickering? You forgot FX^5, even though it never had much comp, or games that were conducive to comp for that matter. Kidding, they had some of the vs games. And a 3S machine for like… 3 days.

I’ve heard that Future Worlds ( SW arcade ) has moved to DT chinatown. I am guessing in the building at Spadina/Dundas.

im out of the loop big time, but what games does playscape have now, and last i remember there were no serious arcades in that dragoncity building right at spadina and dundas

There’s a 3rd strike machine in the basement of Chinatown Centre just south of Dundas and Spadina. It’s located in a sundries store I believe. I think there’s a marvel machine in the net cafe as well.

There’s nothing in Dragon City though. Although they used to have a food court downstairs with an alcove of video games. It’s the first place I played Double Dragon. I think that was in 1986.

1986, good gosh how older are you kin?

So last night was funalnds final day open. It was open till midnight and 3s was nothing less than hype. The place was open until midnight and I made sure i stayed till the very end.

When I got there, the former heavy wieght champion K was there doing wat he does best and beasting.
**** As much as many of us here ended up not likeing K for his attitude towards samir wen he lost, ill still give credit were credit is due. Lets face it, as much as alot of us here think how bad ass we are in 3s and how well we study the game, or how much tournament experience we have and think a guy like K is a push over, u know how wrong u are. All OG’s and Newblood’s and even sophmore ppl here who play 3s wont ever deny wen uv encounterd K you got ur ass whoped and whoped hard. I even remember when Ack (who at the time i had no idea who he was) came to FL and faced K, he got mauled hard (sure u can blame the sticks i guess). Like the very first time i saw a kara demon in gameplay was fromt this guy and i can recall myself just grabbing the closest person to me and shacking them sensless and screaming "DID U SEE THAT, FUCK DAMMIT NIGGA DID U SEE THAT!! ". Alot of us here picked up tricks and ideas from his gameplay that is still being used today. he brought alot of stlye and origionality to the table. As a person hes a cool guy but even Ill admit his attitude was pure shit imo. BUt my point being is K was great back then and is still a great 3s competetior even now. *******
alot of familiar faces showed up, TOSF PARRY exhibition creaotr guy (short asian guy, kinda old) with his buddy Criss Cross (as sum of you refer him to, the guy who plays dudley cross handed)goe tie guy, miles, Q and there freind the yang palyer, JOHN!! (he use to be the change guy at the kennedy arcade, has a real bad ass ken) and even at one point JOE (T3 or T2 team champion) showed up to pay their last respects. the list goes on. AND THERE WAS THIS ONE GUY WHO CAM DRESSED UP AS RYU WEARING THE RED HEAD BAND TO JUST TO PAY HIS LAST RESPECTS !!!

But it was a fun night at one point people were playing each other for one last time, seeing old school beefs and veterans go at it one last time was something else (mind you i was high at this point and it was just something amazing to see). Getting to watch some K vs John, random beast Ryu player vs TOSF parry exhibtion guy, Criss cross vs JOE, everything was hype because everyone wanted to leave their mark and so they played at their outmost best accompanied by my play by play shit talk comentatoring for every game it was hands down a really fun evening.

Then Samir shows up and begins to do wat he does best for one last time at FL. even though for pretty much the rest of the night Samir stayed on and go on another ridiculous win streak, even he cant deny at one point there were good competitors who almost took him out (mind you hes playin Q then goes to yun after). Samir was sooooooooo full of gass at one point he even hand gestured the come over hear movment everytime he got hit by a super lmao TO BEAST !!! At the end of this the Final match at the arcade was between me vs samir in wat was a pretty much free money for samir. After all that we said our good byes told everyone to keep playing and go to pmall.

Say what you want about FL, sure is was a grundgy arcade, funny smell, hoodlums and hobos rouning around, random change guy vomiting at the garbage (LMAO), police stepping on ppl, random Iraqi or afghany (watever the heck he was) slapping ppls faces and tryin to pick fights, drug dealers dealing, machines not being sanitaized often or at all, stky floor, retarded fat old lady driving around in her scooter and honkin at people to get the heck out of the way so she can go play some pinball, old smelly old men inhabiting the back of the arcade to play some Pac man, random ugly prostitutes trying to get a deal off me for services, ITG and DDR peopel sweating up all over that machine, watching insane white guy doing the most ridiculous dance for every song he played on (i swaer he did the most retarded hand movments to each song, i swaer he tought he was a mystical ninja at one point), listening to RTSD rant on about 3s facts while total strangers are playing the game (:D) , etc etc …

BUT … even though it had all this, this was the place were alot of us started playing. If it werent for FL, i would have never discovered the greatness that was guilty gear. I remember even at one point me and howard were equals in MArvel , STFU howard u cant even say shit son lol, my very first team i choose at the time (magneto cyclops and doom) use to beat howard often, but of course now i can only dream of beating howard in MvC2. I can remeber one random night after my class was done i headed to FL and that was the first time I ever saw Jay, Luie and burton. They were going at it like fiends, that was the first time i saw genei jin used like that and the first time I saw someone dominate with 12 and of course the dudley beasting was jaw dropping.

Iv personally made alot of good friends at this arcade, it was a place where anyone can go at any random time and play some 3s or watever game. Weather it was waiting for a class to start and u wnna burn three hours at FL, or weather it was ur break or lunch from work, or weather u wanted to play a couple of games before u went out clubbing or drinking or watever, Fl wa always there to fill the void.

I personally will miss FL becuase overall i had good times there. RIP funland thanks for the memories …
